; This investigation reflects on the testimony of political violence, given in public or private spaces, which commemorate “internal armed conflicts” in Peru, Guatemala and El Salvador. Testimony is not only the documentary record of violence, but also the performative act of its social execution. For this reason, testimony, in this study, is essentially the voice and body, within a special space of collective encounter, in the conformation of new national narratives of violence, and in opposition to the scientific-social paradigm of the Truth Commission’s Final Report of these countries. For this purpose, the testimonial act and its relation to the anthropological tradition of the Hispano-American Testimony, as well its utopic representation, its intellectual mediation, and its ethnographic methodology are defined. It also reflects on the role of testimony from the perspective of a multidisciplinary literary analysis of the discursive manifestations of political-social struggles in Latin America. First, the idea of the body is evaluated in the development of three sciences: the Anatomy of the Renaissance, the Social Sciences, in Europe during the 19th century, and in 20th century philosophy. The objective is to understand the role of the body in the understanding of the individual in his social environment as an organism, structure, force and idealization, in authors such as Andreas Vesalius, Karl Marx, and Michael Foucault. In addition, ideas about the “performative body” are reviewed, in the setting of the artistic tendencies of European university movements, in the middle of the last century. The conception of the so-called “Indian” elaborated in the work of José Carlos Mariátegui, Miguel Ángel Asturias and Roque Dalton regarding American social reality at beginning of the 20th century is then analyzed. According to Walter Benjamin —every document of civilization is at the same time a document of barbarism—, the objective is to understand these studies from the perspective of the violent social conflicts that followed. This is because it is necessary to conceive the so-called “civil wars”, as episodes connected, through time, with concrete historical facts. A critical reading is then made of the commission’s final report of these three countries: Peru’s Commission of Truth and Reconciliation, Guatemala’s Interdiocesan Project for the Recovery of Historical Memory / Historical Clarification Commission, and El Salvador’s Truth Commission. A testimony reading is made within the spectrum of this commission’s final report, to define aspects of their methodology and institutional methodology. The objective is to observe how the ethical-moral discourse of the salvation of a “divided society”, impacted the Final Report in a complex and profound manner. The central part of this study, which is developed in the last three chapters, is that, at the time of testimony, events that marked life or death, rape or guerrilla struggle, are relived and imagined in the hearings, symbolic courts, interviews or any other communication space carried out under the shadow of these Commissions: a process called “corporización”. The testimony and the body that testifies mark the testimonial discourse itself, constituting two important elements to define ritual events known as “Public Hearings”, “Courts of Conscience” or other similar spaces of encounter between the witness and the commissioners, the members of a court or the interviewer.

The expression »to come out of the closet« calls for an analysis of how language and notional as well as social spaces interact and intersect to constitute »queer«. This performative book, a product of artistic research, is an exploration of the proverbial closet through linguistics, queer, and post-colonial theory. It is a project in which opacity, minority, and improvisation happen on the levels of content, analysis, and typography. 11 queer slangs from around the world become part of an exploration of queerness and knowledge from the Periphery through autoethnography, Édouard Glissant's concept of opacity, José Muñoz's disidentifications, and Gloria Anzaldúa's performative writing. Theory, personal accounts, and art are interwoven to offer an interdisciplinary reading of the slangs as queer methods of survival and resistance.

"This volume provides a diachronic and synchronic overview of linguistic variability and change in involved, speech-related and spoken texts in English. While previous works on the topic have focused on more limited time periods, this book covers data from the 16th century up to the present day. The studies offer new insights into historical and present-day corpus pragmatics by identifying and exploring features of orality in a variety of registers. For readers who are new to the field, the range of approaches will provide a helpful overview; for readers who are already familiar with the field, the volume will shed light on the complexity of factors such as register, sociolinguistic variability and language attitude, thus making it a useful resource and stepping stone for further exploration. The volume celebrates the groundbreaking contributions of Professor Merja Kytö in making accessible speech-related corpus material and leading the way in its exploration"--

This study proposes an ambitious typology of the written representation of oral speech. It is based on a detailed semiological examination of the relationship between orality and literacy as well as on an analysis of data stemming from literary discourse. Three types of representation of orality are distinguished, where the written form appeals to the phonographic system, the metalinguistic semantics or the prosodic performance of the reader

Theory, personal accounts, and art are interwoven to offer an interdisciplinary reading of the slangs as queer methods of survival and resistance

The appearance in recent years of an impressive series of books, articles, and mainly dissertations on various aspects of the Mishnah collectively signifies something greater than the sum of its parts. These works herald the emergence of a new wave of Mishnah research. While differing significantly in their themes and methods, all the works discussed here share some basic methodological assumptions that are not shared by more “traditional” studies. Among these are a holistic attitude to the Mishnah as a composition; interest in questions of variegation of genre and style (narratives, rituals, lists, etc.); sensitivity to literary devices and techniques; and the use of new interpretive paradigms from rhetoric, cultural, and performative studies.

This study compares African divination and oracle speech to prophetic oracle speech in ancient Israel. It is generally acknowledged by scholars that both African divination and prophetic oracle speech in the ancient Near Eastern (ANE) world—focusing particularly on Israel––do not confine themselves to the proclamation role, but, instead, broaden to accommodate the distinct supernatural prowess dimensions. This essay demonstrates that natural phenomena and paraphernalia––such as ditaola (divining bones), metsi (water), mmu le lefatshe (land spaces), mebala (colours), and the fauna and flora––are interrelated in an oracle-speech dialogue. The study argues for contextual and relevant perspectives of oracle speech in African divination in comparison to prophecy in ancient Israel. It is argued in this submission that oracle speeches in both Israelite prophecy and (southern) African divination share some striking similarities although some divergences can also be identified.

Introduction: communication and material complexities in Ugandan Christianity -- Protestantism's enduring communication complexities: the tension between Protestants' commitment to the biblical text and the pervasiveness of illiteracy -- "Washing in the word": situating the orality movement in Protestant history -- Africa Gospel Church: antecedents, history, and people -- Communication complexities in the Africa Gospel Church -- Analysis: material complexities in AGC's reception of orality -- Conclusion: the material implications of orality. "How do twenty-first century Christians communicate the Bible and their faith in today's mediascape? Members of the International Orality Network (ION) believe that the answer to that paramount question is: orality. For too long, they argue, presentations of Christianity have operated on a printed (literate) register, hindering many from receiving and growing in the Christian faith. Instead, they champion the spoken word and narrative presentations of the gospel message. In light of the church's shift to the Global South, how have such communication approaches been received by majority world Christians? This book explores the responses and reactions of local Ugandan Christians to this'oral renaissance.'The investigation, grounded in ethnographic research, uncovers the complex relationships between local and international culture brokers--all of whom are seeking to establish particular'modern'identities. The research conclusions challenge static Western categorizations and point towards an integrated understanding of communication that appreciates the role of materiality and embodiment in a broader religious socioeconomic discourse as well as taking into account societal anticipations of a flourishing'modern'African Church. This book promises to stimulate dialogue for those concerned about the communication complexities that are facing the global church in the twenty-first century."--Publisher

Medieval literature is to a large degree shaped by orality, not only with regard to performance, but also to transmission and composition. Although problems of orality have been much discussed by medievalists, there is to date no comprehensive handbook on this topic. 'Medieval Oral Literature', a volume in the 'De Gruyter Lexikon' series, was written by an international team of twenty-five scholars and offers a thorough discussion of theoretical approaches as well as detailed presentations of individual traditions and genres. In addition to chapters on the oral-formulaic theory, on the interplay of orality and writing in the Early Middle Ages, on performance and performers, on oral poetics and on ritual aspects of orality, there are chapters on the Older Germanic, Romance, Middle High German, Middle English, Celtic, Greek-Byzantine, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian and Turkish traditions of oral literature. There is a special focus on epic and lyric, genres that are also discussed in separate chapters, with additional chapters on the ballad and on drama Mittelalterliche Dichtung ist weitgehend der Mündlichkeit verpflichtet, nicht nur was den Vortrag und die Aufführung betrifft, sondern auch im Bezug auf die Überlieferung und das Dichten selbst.
