    Natalie Mylonas uses Ezekiel 16 as a case study in order to reveal the critical relationship between space, emotion, and identity politics in the Hebrew Bible. Drawing on interdisciplinary research that emphasises how space and emotions are inextricably linked in human experience, Mylonas explores the portrayal of Yhwh's wife, Jerusalem, in Ezekiel 16 as a personified city who feels emotion. She foregrounds purity and gender issues, as well as debates on emotions in the Hebrew Bible, emphasising that spatiality is a key component of how these issues are conceptualised in ancient Israel. This book argues that the power struggle between Jerusalem and Yhwh in Ezekiel 16 is a struggle over the contested space of Jerusalem's body and the city space. Jerusalem's emotions are in a dynamic relationship with the spaces in the text - they are signified by these spaces, shift as the constitution of the spaces shifts, and are shaped by Jerusalem's use of space. Her desire, pride, and shamelessness are communicated spatially through her use of city space, while her representation as disgusting is underscored by her uncontrollable female body. Mylonas concludes by showing how Ezekiel's vision of the new Jerusalem in Ezekiel 40-48 re-establishes sacred space through the erasure of the feminine city metaphor coupled with strict boundary policing, which is a far cry from the assault on Jerusalem's boundaries described in Ezekiel 16

    Jewish Bible commentary in the Middle Ages took on two aspects, the Sephardic and the Ashkenazic. The first, Spanish interpretation, developed in a Muslim surrounding, which appreciated secular studies, the sciences, and Arabic literature, much of which it had translated from Greek. These studies made their mark on Bible exegesis, which sought the simple straightforward sense (peshat) of a verse and its grammatical meaning. The Ashkenazic school, however, situated in France and Germany, was firmly anchored in the rabbinic study hall and its exegesis was a continuation of the methods of Midrash and Aggadah as practiced in Mishnah and Talmud. In the beginning of the twelfth century, Ashkenazic commentary in northern France took on a new face. Contact with the outside world, including Christian scholarship, and partial knowledge of general studies, brought the Ashkenazi Jewish commentators to the realization that the Bible, besides being a religious text, was also literature. As literature, many features including the order of biblical pericopes or units attracted attention. The classic commentators, Rashi in France, Ibn Ezra in Toledo and Ramban (Nahmanides) in northern Spain all dealt with biblical order. Order as Meaning cites many cases of sequential arrangement and juxtaposition taken from the rabbinic period as well as from the above three commentators, explaining what there was to learn from such a study

Die Monographie nimmt die Gattung der Jenseitsreisen in den Blick und beginnt mit einer Analyse der Jenseitsreise des Apostels Paulus (2 Kor 12,2-4). An diesen Text schließt die apokryphe Paulus-Apokalypse an, deren Jenseitserzählung sich signifikant von der der früheren Petrus-Apokalypse unterscheidet. Um das Verhältnis der beiden Apokalypsen zu klären, wird das sich in der frühjüdischen Tradition herausbildende Erzählverfahren der Jenseitsreise rekonstruiert. Ein zweiter Blick auf die frühchristlichen Apokalypsen zeigt, dass anders als in der Petrus-Apokalypse, die sich auf die pagan-antiken ›spectacula‹ bezieht, in der Paulus-Apokalypse dieses Erzählverfahren konsequent umgesetzt wird. Auf die Analyse frühmittelalterlicher Entwürfe folgt die Untersuchung der suggestiv erzählenden Visio Tnugdali und des Tractatus de Purgatorio S. Patricii, der nicht nur auf komplexe Weise die Patrickslegende voraussetzt, sondern seine eigene Medialität unter Rekurs auf den viktorinischen Symbolismus reflektiert: Das anschaulich erzählte Jenseits wird als ›lesbar‹ in Hinsicht auf eine nichtsichtbare Wirklichkeit verstanden, die es bezeichnet. Am Ende der Arbeit steht die Visio Thurkilli, gleichsam eine ›summa visionum‹

    Der im Gesamtzusammenhang des Pentateuchs hervorstechende gottesrechtliche Zuschnitt alttestamentlichen Rechts bildet keineswegs die einzige prägende Begründung der Gesetze. Ausgehend von dieser Beobachtung untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit anhand des Bundesbuches die Frage, wie alttestamentliches Recht begründet und autorisiert wird. Ihr interdisziplinärer Zugang führt rechtstheoretische, literaturwissenschaftliche und textgeschichtliche Überlegungen zusammen. Synchrone und diachrone Betrachtungsweisen verbindend, bezieht sich die Arbeit konsequent auf eine durch die wichtigsten Textzeugen gebildete Rekonstruktion der Textgeschichte. Auf dieser Grundlage stellt sie einerseits die vielschichtigen Verflechtungen und wechselseitigen Sinnanreicherungen von Rechts- und Erzähltexten innerhalb des Pentateuchs dar. Andererseits wird in der großflächigen Untersuchung antiker Texttraditionen deutlich, dass die betrachteten Textzeugen im Rahmen der Ein- und Festschreibung von Sinngehalten eigene Schwerpunkte setzen. Die darin nachweisbare Vielfalt in der jeweiligen Konzeption der Rechtsbegründung bewahrt Spuren rechts- und texthistorischer Diskurse, die mit literarhistorisch relevanten Formungsprozessen der Hebräischen Bibel einhergehen

    Klappentext: Jewish Bible commentary in the Middle Ages took on two aspects, the Sephardic and the Ashkenazic. The first, Spanish interpretation, developed in a Muslim surrounding, which appreciated secular studies, the sciences, and Arabic literature, much of which it had translated from Greek. These studies made their mark on Bible exegesis, which sought the simple straightforward sense (peshat) of a verse and its grammatical meaning. The Ashkenazic school, however, situated in France and Germany, was firmly anchored in the rabbinic study hall and its exegesis was a continuation of the methods of Midrash and Aggadah as practiced in Mishnah and Talmud. In the beginning of the twelfth century, Ashkenazic commentary in northern France took on a new face. Contact with the outside world, including Christian scholarship, and partial knowledge of general studies, brought the Ashkenazi Jewish commentators to the realization that the Bible, besides being a religious text, was also literature. As literature, many features including the order of biblical pericopes or units attracted attention. The classic commentators, Rashi in France, Ibn Ezra in Toledo and Ramban (Nahmanides) in northern Spain all dealt with biblical order. Order as Meaning cites many cases of sequential arrangement and juxtaposition taken from the rabbinic period as well as from the above three commentators, explaining what there was to learn from such a study

    Natalie Mylonas uses Ezekiel 16 as a case study in order to reveal the critical relationship between space, emotion, and identity politics in the Hebrew Bible. Drawing on interdisciplinary research that emphasises how space and emotions are inextricably linked in human experience, Mylonas explores the portrayal of Yhwh's wife, Jerusalem, in Ezekiel 16 as a personified city who feels emotion. She foregrounds purity and gender issues, as well as debates on emotions in the Hebrew Bible, emphasising that spatiality is a key component of how these issues are conceptualised in ancient Israel. This book argues that the power struggle between Jerusalem and Yhwh in Ezekiel 16 is a struggle over the contested space of Jerusalem's body and the city space. Jerusalem's emotions are in a dynamic relationship with the spaces in the text - they are signified by these spaces, shift as the constitution of the spaces shifts, and are shaped by Jerusalem's use of space. Her desire, pride, and shamelessness are communicated spatially through her use of city space, while her representation as disgusting is underscored by her uncontrollable female body. Mylonas concludes by showing how Ezekiel's vision of the new Jerusalem in Ezekiel 40-48 re-establishes sacred space through the erasure of the feminine city metaphor coupled with strict boundary policing, which is a far cry from the assault on Jerusalem's boundaries described in Ezekiel 16
