When Canadian authors win prestigious literary prizes, from the Governor General's Literary Award to the Man Booker Prize, they are celebrated not only for their achievements, but also for contributing to this country's cultural capital. Discussions about culture, national identity, and citizenship are particularly complicated when the honorees are immigrants, like Michael Ondaatje, Carol Shields, or Rohinton Mistry. Then there is the case of Yann Martel, who is identified both as Canadian and as rootlessly cosmopolitan. How have these writers' identities been recalibrated in order to claim them as 'representative' Canadians?Prizing Literature is the first extended study of contemporary award winning Canadian literature and the ways in which we celebrate its authors. Gillian Roberts uses theories of hospitality to examine how prize-winning authors are variously received and honoured depending on their citizenship and the extent to which they represent 'Canadianness.' Prizing Literature sheds light on popular and media understandings of what it means to be part of a multicultural nation

"This study analyses how immigrant and ethnic-minority writers have challenged the understanding of certain national literatures and have markedly changed them. In other national contexts, ideologies and institutions have contained the challenge these writers pose to national literatures. Case studies of the emergence and recognition of immigrant and ethnic-minority writing come from fourteen national contexts. These include classical immigration countries, such as Canada and the United States, countries where immigration accelerated and entered public debate after World War II, such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany, as well as countries rarely discussed in this context, such as Brazil and Japan. Finally, this study uses these individual analyses to discuss this writing as an international phenomenon" ...

"Worrying the Nation is a critical fretting about the possibility of a national literature in Canada at a time when the very idea of the nation as a viable conceptual/literary category has been called into question." "Jonathan Kertzer stakes out the theoretical ground where three competing discourses (national + literary + history) intersect. He shows how the legacy of Herder and Hegel's romantic historicism both inspired and baffled literary historians in English Canada, who found their fragmentary country unsuited to the romantic model. Kertzer illustrates this difficulty in an analysis of three flawed attempts at poetic nation-buildingOliver Goldsmith's The Rising Village, E.J. Pratt's Towards the Last Spike, and Dennis Lee's Civil Elegies - then shows how disillusionment among more recent critics and writers has led to new models of sociability, as reflected in the novels of Joy Kogawa and Daphne Marlatt. Finally, Kertzer argues that while the nation remains an inevitable category of both political and literary thought, it must be used subtly and self-critically to articulate the 'motley space' of a national life."--Jacket

This study explores the manner in which English Renaissance poets invented a poetic genealogy. The title comes from Franciscus Junius, who in 1638 used the term "conceived presence" to describe the ancient masters whose paintings had been lost but who nonetheless remained important forebears of the tradition of visual art. Raphael Falco applies the notion of "conceived presences" to late sixteenth-century poets intent on establishing a national literature. They too conceived the presence of their forebears, both ancient and modern. As Falco demonstrates, Elizabethan and Jacobean poets saw Philip Sidney as their most important modern precursor and placed him at the root of their family tree

The book's introduction examines the use of heraldic and genealogical rhetoric in relation to theories of the origins of poetry. Subsequent chapters provide close studies of Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Ben Jonson, and John Milton. Falco demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the most recent Renaissance criticism, both historicist and linguistic. His book reveals a promising synthesis of critical approaches, a New Humanism in which theoretical perspectives and philological research combine to shed light on the aesthetic ambitions of English Renaissance poets

Instant artifacts: vernacular elegies for Philip Sidney -- Rhymes to please the dead: Spenser's "Astrophel" -- "A fire now, that lent a shade": Ben Jonson's conversion of the Sidney Legacy and his crowning of Shakespeare -- Repudiated trees: genealogy and election in John Milton

"Through examination of the literary and cultural relations among Russia, Japan, and colonial Korea and through understanding of a shared sensibility and literary experience in East Asia, this book highlights translation as a radical and ineradicable part of the formation of modern national literature and begins to rethink the way modern literature developed in Korea and East Asia"..

"Nationalism has given the world a genre of poetry bright with ideals of justice, freedom and the brotherhood of man, but also, at times, burning with humiliation and grievance, hatred and lust for revenge, driving human kind, as the Austrian poet Grillparzer put it, 'From humanity via nationality to bestiality'. National Poetry, Empires and War considers national poetry, and its glorification of war, from ancient to modern times, in a series of historical, social and political perspectives. Starting with the Hebrew Bible and Homer and moving through the Crusades and examples of subsequent empires, this book has much on pre-modern national poetry but focuses chiefly on post-1789 poetry which emerged from the weakening and collapse of empires, as the idealistic liberalism of nationalism in the age of Byron, Whitman, D'Annunzio, Yeats, Bialik, and Kipling was replaced by darker purposes culminating in World War I and the rise of fascism. Many national poets are the subject of countless critical and biographical studies, but this book aims to give a panoramic view of national poetry as a whole. It will be of great interest to any scholars of nationalism, Jewish Studies, history, comparative literature, and general cultural studies"..
