    In many modes of behavior, people act more and more like machines. In the context of work, people have become a human resource that can be replaced at any time. An existence without purpose cannot be imagined - just as a machine without function is absurd. Do humans already think like machines? Do they have a "master-slave" relationship with them? Are humans no longer any more than an organic prosthetic fitted to an inorganic body? With his created robotic beings, Niki Passath breaks with this seemingly rational technological system. By eliminating the predominant rationality of the machine, he gives it a new meaning. This book is the first monograph on the artist's oeuvre.     Anthropology is a notoriously polysemous term. Within a continental European academic context, it is usually employed in the sense of philosophical anthropology, and mainly concerned with exploring concepts of a universal human nature. By contrast, Anglo-American scholarship almost exclusively associates anthropology with the investigation of cultural and ethnic differences (cultural anthropology). How these two main traditions (and their 'derivations' such as literary anthropology, historical anthropology, ethnology, ethnography, intercultural studies) relate to each other is a matter of debate. Both, however, have their roots in the path-breaking changes that occurred within sixteenth and early seventeenth-century culture and scientific discourse. It was in fact during this period that the term anthropology first acquired the meanings on which its current usage is based. The Renaissance did not 'invent' the human. But the period that gave rise to 'humanism' witnessed an unprecedented diversification of the concept that was at its very core. The question of what defines the human became increasingly contested as new developments like the emergence of the natural sciences, religious pluralisation, as well as colonial expansion, were undermining old certainties. The proliferation of doctrines of the human in the early modern age bears out the assumption that anthropology is a discipline of crisis, seeking to establish sets of common values and discursive norms in situations when authority finds itself under pressure

    Dieses ist keine Geschichte der Subjektivität, die immer vom cartesianischen Dispositiv einer Gegenüberständigkeit von Subjekt und Welt auszugehen hätte. Vielmehr entwickelt das Buch eine (Literatur)Geschichte des europäischen Menschen. Dabei wird vorausgesetzt, dass die Literatur Entwürfe des Lebens präsentiert, die menschliches Dasein in den Rahmen fiktiver Wirklichkeiten stellen. "In der Welt sein" bezeichnet den Leitgedanken, nicht: ihr gegenüberstehen. Die Untersuchung arbeitet mit einer langen Reihe von Texten und Textgruppen, die mit der "Ilias" (ca. 8. Jhdt. v. Chr.) beginnt und mit Ernst Jüngers "In Stahlgewittern" (1920) endet. Was die zeitlich umfassende Anlage betrifft, so knüpft sie an Erich Auerbachs "Mimesis" (1946) an. Allerdings verfolgt Auerbach eine literaturimmanente Frage (Herausbildung des literarischen Realismus), während diese Arbeit die Geschichte der Literatur als Prozess der literarischen Modernisierung konstruiert und sie mit der Gesamtgeschichte verbindet.Im Zentrum der theoretischen Konzeption steht die Frage nach der Balance zwischen den dinglich-sachlichen Gegebenheiten, einschließlich der Artefakte, und den menschlichen Akteuren in den Wirklichkeitsmodellen der Texte
