The Oxford Handbook of Charles Brockden Brown is a comprehensive and up-to-date collection on Brown's life and works. It includes original chapters on all of Brown's fictional and non-fictional writing and new considerations of his contexts, from the social, political, and economic to the scientific, commercial, and religious. The contributions speak in new ways about his depictions of literary theory, social justice, sexuality, and property relations, as well as slavery, Native Americans, and women's rights. His understanding of American and global history, of his own nation and foreign ones, and of selfhood and otherness, like all the other topics, is explained in terms easy to comprehend and profoundly relevant to emerging modernity.

Literary criticism today is dominated by the debate about whether texts have a fixed identity with established meaning or a variable identity with changing meaning. The very nature of what the critic does and what he can provide for his readers is being questioned; the challenge to the traditional view comes especially from the various theoretical formulations which, agreeing on the need to go beyond formal analysis, have been called post-structuralism. At the core is the fundamental question of what a literary text is. Identity of the Literary Text addresses his question. In five sections - textuality and intertextuality, textual deconstruction, hermeneutics, analytical construction, and ideological perspective - fifteen scholars, many with world-wide reputations, consider such key aspects of literary criticism as the structure of texts, the relationship between text, author, and reader, the psychological and sociological implications of literary texts, and whether or not a general theory of literary criticism is possible. This book brings together, in the spirit of dialogue, the arguments on both sides of the most important issue in literary criticism today. It will be of interest to all concerned with textual theory, regardless of which literature are considered

Professor Valdes presents a theory of literary criticism based on phenomenological philosophy - primarily the work of Husserl, Ingarden, Merleau-Ponty, and Ricoeur. His basic argument is that literary texts are inexhaustible sources of imaginative creativity for their readers, and, further, that this openness does not inhibit serious commentary but rather enhances the critic's possibilities of exchange, dialogue, and intellectual enrichment. He argues for a system of classification of narrative texts according to phenomenological principles in which form is considered as a heuristic device established for the purpose of understanding the nature of literary expression. The only critical approach he holds to be untenable is that which lays claim to a definitive interpretation of a text, for such an approach would mean the death of the literary text as a creative source. Valdes' presentation progresses from a statement of premises, through the construction of a critical approach, to a concluding historical generalization about literature. To introduce the richness of the Hispanic literatures and to elaborate an historical overview of one literary tradition, he has chosen to examine texts from Hispanic literatures exclusively, notably those of Unamuno and Cervantes

The core of this book is made up of five essays, by distinguished scholars of international reputation, that treat the relation between current literary theory and Romanticism. The book originated in a series of lectures presented at the University of New Mexico in 1983. All but one of the essays are published here for the first time. The contributors are Northrop Frye, W. J. T. Mitchell, J. Hillis Miller, M. H. Abrams, and Stanley Cavell. Frye's essay is a major statement on the backgrounds of Romanticism. W. J. T. Mitchell's contribution takes up, through the composite arts of William Blake, the relation of poetry and painting, writing and printing, criticism and politics. The controversy over deconstruction is the occasion for a matched pair of essays by J. Hillis Miller and M. H. Abrams, advocate and antagonist respectively. In his essay, Abrams makes a definitive statement on his view of deconstruction and its intellectual heritage. The fifth piece, by Stanley Cavell, is the first extended discussion of English and American Romanticism by this major contemporary philosopher. Following each essay is an edited transcript of a question-and-answer session in which the contributor-critic ranges widely and freely over today's critical scene. The sessions make fascinating reading. This book should be of compelJing interest to students of Romanticism as well as to students and scholars interested in the uses and implications of poststructuralist theory

Deconstruction, it seems, is dead. Its death, according to Jeffrey T. Nealon, is commonly attributed either to suicide-a direct result of its own decline into a formalism it was supposed to remedy-or to murder at the hands of the New Historicists. Looking beyond its presumed demise, Nealon sees its insights as continuing to figure importantly in postmodernist critical debates

This volume contains an edited selection of the papers read at the International Colloquium on Interpretation of Narrative held at the University of Toronto, 24 to 27 March 1976 by the Graduate Programme in Comparative Literature. The papers in the first part all deal with the methodology of text-oriented criticism; the papers in the second brng to the discussion a fundamental agreement and acceptance of the hermeneutic method and reception theory. It is most fitting that these proceedings should end with an attempt to find the holistic identity of interpretation of narrative. The papers in the third part were prepared for the colloquium and were published in part afterwards in Critical Inquiry and each assisted in the inquiry

In recent years Yeats has been receiving a great deal of critical attention from many aspects. Professor Engelberg here makes a distinctive contribution to the new studies by bringing under discussion the kind of aesthetic views developed by Yeats in order to rationalize his own practice as poet and dramatist. Yeats was pragmatic in his approach and therefore not concerned about formulating a tight critical theory. Recognizing this, the author at the same time skilfully guides the reader through the opinions expressed in the critical essays to meaningful patterns and shows how Yeats's aesthetic views developed, often in relation to his study of Balzac, Blake, Spenser, Shelley, Morris, and the Irish theatre of his own day. Throughout the stress is fittingly on the originality of Yeats, and the reader will be impressed always with his great critical perceptiveness
