Mientras una parte de las intervenciones críticas sobre el tema se ha dedicado a resaltar las conexiones entre las ciencias sociales caribeñas y los paradigmas científicos europeos y norteamericanos, Domínguez, en cambio, examina la importancia de la literatura para la constitución de las ciencias sociales como práctica y discurso moderno en el Caribe. Al mismo tiempo, devela las alianzas que se suscitaron entre las tempranas ciencias sociales y los proyectos nacionales caribeños.     Die Auslegung der Moderne bleibt ein abgekartetes Spiel, solange sie sich nicht ihrem globalen Komplement zuwendet: der Auslegung dessen, was die Kategorie des sogenannten >Primitiven< für die Moderne bedeutete. Statt den Primitivismus der Moderne allein als Faktum einer illusionären Aneignung und realen Unterwerfung des außereuropäischen Fremden zu behandeln und imagologisch einzufrieren, gilt es dabei, die Praktiken und Fremderfahrungen der Moderne nachzuzeichnen, die aus der kolonialen Mobilität von Personen, Zeichen und Dingen im ersten großen Globalisierungsschub entstanden waren und in der Entgegensetzung von Modernem und Primitivem verhandelt wurden. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts waren weltweit proportional mehr Menschen unterwegs als heute, und in der Folge entstanden die heute noch erfolgreichsten künstlerischen und musikalischen Synkretismen. Auch der Begriff der Weltliteratur stand zwischen 1870 und 1960 zur Disposition. Was ist aus den weltliterarischen Erwartungen der Moderne geworden, die im Namen des Primitiven formuliert wurden? Aus dem Inhalt: - Die Ashanti folgen dem Motiv der Kästchenwahl, um sich die schriftliche Überlegenheit der Kolonisatoren zu erklären und sie zu konterkarieren. - Kabbo diktiert 1873 dem Linguisten Wilhelm Bleek: >Die Briefe der Buschmänner sind in ihren Körpern.< - Sam Blowsnake zeichnet 1912 für Paul Radin den Tricksterzyklus der Winnebago auf, und berichtet von seinem Leben in der Wild West Show. - Europäische Theoretiker glauben an Totem und Tabu. - Aby Warburg spricht 1923 über den Schlangentanz der Hopi und verläßt das Sanatorium >Belle-Vue<. - Marcel Mauss begründet 1925 den Gabentausch aus römischem Recht und germanischer Literatur. - Gregory Bateson erarbeitet 1943 eine folkloristische Lesart von >Hitlerjunge Quex<, um die Re-Education Deutschlands zu diskutieren. -1952 rechtfertigt Claude Lévi-Strauss die symbolische Verbrennung eines Weihnachtsmanns. -- Jean Rouch filmt 1954 bei Accra den Hund, dem das Fell abgezogen wurde, weil er Europa vorstellte: Gaabi cirey!

    As an anthropology student studying with Franz Boas, Zora Neale Hurston recorded African American folklore in rural central Florida, studied hoodoo in New Orleans and voodoo in Haiti, talked with the last ex-slave to survive the Middle Passage, and collected music from Jamaica. Her ethnographic work would serve as the basis for her novels and other writings in which she shaped a vision of African American Southern rural folk culture articulated through an antiracist concept of culture championed by Boas: culture as plural, relative, and long-lived. Meanwhile, a very different antiracist model of culture learned from Robert Park's sociology allowed Richard Wright to imagine African American culture in terms of severed traditions, marginal consciousness, and generation gaps.In A Genealogy of Literary Multiculturalism, Christopher Douglas uncovers the largely unacknowledged role played by ideas from sociology and anthropology in nourishing the politics and forms of minority writers from diverse backgrounds. Douglas divides the history of multicultural writing in the United States into three periods. The first, which spans the 1920s and 1930s, features minority writers such as Hurston and D'Arcy McNickle, who were indebted to the work of Boas and his attempts to detach culture from race.The second period, from 1940 to the mid-1960s, was a time of assimilation and integration, as seen in the work of authors such as Richard Wright, Jade Snow Wong, John Okada, and Ralph Ellison, who were influenced by currents in sociological thought. The third period focuses on the writers we associate with contemporary literary multiculturalism, including Toni Morrison, N. Scott Momaday, Frank Chin, Ishmael Reed, and Gloria Anzaldúa. Douglas shows that these more recent writers advocated a literary nationalism that was based on a modified Boasian anthropology and that laid the pluralist grounds for our current conception of literary multiculturalism.Ultimately, Douglas's "unified field theory" of multicultural literature brings together divergent African American, Asian American, Mexican American, and Native American literary traditions into one story: of how we moved from thinking about groups as races to thinking about groups as cultures-and then back again.

    Beowulf is one of the most important poems in Old English and the first major poem in European vernacular language. It dramatizes behavior in a complex social world—a martial, aristocratic world that we often distort by imposing on it our own biases and values. In this cross-disciplinary study, John Hill looks at Beowulf from a comparative ethnological point of view. He provides a thorough examination of the socio-cultural dimensions of the text and compares the social milieu of Beowulf to that of similarly organized cultures. Through examination of historical analogs in northern Europe and France, as well as past and present societies on the Pacific rim in Southeast Asia, a complex and extended society is uncovered and an astonishingly different Beowulf is illuminated.The study is divided into five major essays: on ethnology and social drama, the temporal world, the legal world, the economy of honour, and the psychological world. Hill presents a realm where genealogies incorporate social and political statements: in this world gift giving has subtle and manipulative dimensions, both violent and peaceful exchange form a political economy, acts of revenge can be baleful or have jural force, and kinship is as much a constructible fact as a natural one. Family and kinship relations, revenge themes, heroic poetry, myth, legality, and political discussions all bring the importance of the social institutions in Beowulf to the foreground, allowing for a fuller understanding of the poems and its implications for Anglo-Saxon society.
