    Abstract: This collection of essays by leading scholars of American literature and culture has emerged out of recent debates on the historical, geographical, symbolic, and cultural significance of the Atlantic, as well as new work in the area of Transatlantic Studies. In a series of fascinating essays the authors have produced diverse and innovative interventions in the field of Anglo-American literary relations. The authors discussed range from Gertrude Stein to Alfred North Whitehead, Charlotte Perkins Gilman to Sarah Grand, Henry James to George Eliot, Elizabeth Stoddard to Charlotte Bronte, Mark Twain to Walter Scott through to Djuna Barnes and Evelyn Waugh. In its overall conception and in specific contributions (including an introductory essay), this collection demonstrates the benefits of working across the disciplines of history, geography, literature and cultural studies, but also presents new configurations of cultural forms hitherto associated with specifically national and sub-national literatures. The essays, from both established and new scholars working in the fields of British, Irish and comparative cultural studies, addresses broad questions raised by the interface between language, gender, sexuality and ethnicity in relation to marginal identities, but also includes specific genre-based case studies on contemporary poetry, fiction, drama, popular music and art.     Abstract: Marlen Haushofers Roman "Die Wand" kann als Robinsonade aufgefasst werden. Durch eine unüberwindliche Wand wird alles Leben vernichtet, nur die Protagonistin überlebt abgeschieden zusammen mit ihren Tieren in einem Alpental. Ihr Bericht, der den Roman bildet, informiert über die zum Überleben notwendige Arbeit, das Zusammenleben mit den Tieren und auch über ihr Leben früher. Es werden dabei irritierende Szenen und Bilder entworfen, die bei der Lektüre einen latenten Sinn spürbar machen, dem die psychoanalytisch-tiefenhermeneutische Interpretation nachspürt. Anknüpfend an das Leseerlebnis, an Irritationen und Assoziationen wird erschlossen, welche Konflikte die Szenen und Bilder bestimmen: Ablehnung und zugleich Identifikation mit den Tätern, liebende Sorge und Aggression, mütterliche Zuwendung und Gefühlsentzug, lebenserhaltende Aktivität und Depression.     Abstract: Die literarische Gattung "Fastnachtsspiel" war im Mittelalter eine beliebte Spielform, die in den Wochen vor Beginn der Fastenzeit insbesondere in Handwerker-Kreisen zur Aufführung kam. Inhaltlich setzt man sich im Fastnachtsspiel mit dem Herrscher-Bürger Verhältnis, der Kirche und der Sexualität auseinander. Während die gängigen Herrschaftsstrukturen im Fastnachtsspiel kritisiert und pervertiert wurden, wurde das Geschlechterverhältnis bestätigt. Anhand eines Vergleichs der Lebensrealität von Frauen im Mittelalter, ihrem sozialen und rechtlichen Status und der Darstellung der Frau im Fastnachtsspiel wird aufgezeigt, wie sich das bestehende Geschlechterverhältnis durch sexuelle Metaphern, durch Spott und Hohn fortschreibt. Eine "umgekehrte Welt", wie sie im Fastnachtsspiel entworfen werden soll, spart den Aspekt der Geschlechterhierarchie folglich aus

    Abstract: Die kommunistische Kaderpartei versuchte die Literaten zu einer kollektiven Künstleragentur zu formen, welche den Anforderungen des sozialistischen Realismus zu genügen und als Parteisoldaten im Klassenkampf ihren Kampfauftrag zu erfüllen hatte. Alle Prozesse freier Selbstorganisation werden von der Parteiführung als Disziplinbruch stigmatisiert. Unter Berufung auf ihre künstlerische Identität als Literaturproduzenten sollen die Literaten auch als Parteisoldaten kämpfen, dabei sollten die Mitglieder der deutschsprachigen Sektion des sowjetischen Schriftstellerverbandes im Exil als Virtuosen des sozialistischen Realismus ihren Klassenkampfauftrag wahrnehmen. In Anlehnung an Max Webers Theorie der Virtuosengemeinschaft von religiös Qualifizierten kann die leninistische Kaderpartei als eine Virtuosengemeinschaft gekennzeichnet werden.
