This bilingual collection of essays celebrates Marko Pavlyshyn’s outstanding contribution to the study of modern and contemporary Ukrainian literature and culture. With its many methodological approaches and the variety of periods, authors and texts that it analyzes, the book reflects and builds on Marko’s willingness to modernize our understanding of Ukrainian literature as an instrument of communication between authors, readers and the nation from the late eighteenth century to the present day. Hopefully these essays will inspire readers and scholars to continue their journey through Ukrainian culture, in a context profoundly marked by the role of literary texts as agents of nation building and social evolution

"During the pitched battle over slavery in the United States, Black writers-enslaved and free-allied themselves with the cause of abolition and used their art to advocate for emancipation and to envision the end of slavery as a world-historical moment of possibility. They borrowed from the European tradition of Romanticism-its lyric poetry, prophetic visions-to write, speak, and sing their hopes for what freedom might mean. Authors like Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, George Moses Horton, Albery Allson Whitman, and Joshua McCarter Simpson conceived the Civil War as a revolutionary upheaval on par with Europe's stormy Age of Revolutions"--

At the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century, the Latino minority, America's biggest and fastest growing, is at a crossroads. Is assimilation taking place in comparable ways to previous immigrant groups? Are the links to the countries of origin being redefined in the age of contested globalism? How are Latinos changing America and how is America changing Latinos? The Oxford Handbook of Latino Studies reflects on these questions, offering a wide-ranging exploration of the Latino experience in the United States. Twenty-five essays by leading and emerging scholars discuss and reconsider a variety of key themes and issues, including the Chicano Movement, gender and race relations.

The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Fiction presents authoritative essays by thirty-five distinguished scholars of Irish fiction. Collectively, they provide accessible and incisive assessments of the breadth and achievement of Ireland's modern novelists and short story writers, whose contribution to the evolution and modification of these unique art forms has been far out of proportion to the country's small size. The volume brings an impressive variety of critical perspectives to bear on the development of modern Irish fiction, situating authors, texts, and genres in their social, intellectual, and literary-historical contexts.

Cynthia Skenazi explores in this book a shift in attitudes towards aging and provides a historical perspective on a crucial problem of our time. In Aging Gracefully in the Renaissance: Stories of Later Life from Petrarch to Montaigne Cynthia Skenazi explores a shift in attitudes towards aging and provides a historical perspective on a crucial problem of our time. From the late fourteenth to the end of the sixteenth centuries, the elderly subject became a point of new social, medical, political, and literary attention on both sides of the Alps. A movement of secularization tended to dissociate old age from the Christian preparation for death, re-orienting the concept of aging around pragmatic matters such as health care, intergenerational relationships, and accrued insights one might wish to pass along. Such changes were accompanied by an increasing number of personal accounts of later life. This title was made Open Access by libraries from around the world through Knowledge Unlatched.

Main description: The monograph discusses the short formulae of the 'gospel' (euangelion) as the first reflected expressions of Christian faith. They adapted the apocalyptic expectations to express the Easter experience and shaped the earliest literary Gospel (Mark). This book analyzes Gospels as texts that (re-)introduced Jesus traditions into the Christian liturgy and literature. The last chapters are devoted to the origins of the idea of Christian canon

Main description: This volume focuses on the sublime and proposes that the ethical aspect involved in the legal sublime is to contain the arrogance of the law.It also draws attention to the "and" of interdisciplinary literary-legal studies: Law's disciplinary autonomy has been challenged.
