    Un lieu commun de la critique littéraire oppose l'histoire littéraire de la France, perçue comme un continuum presque exempt de ruptures ou de temps faibles, et portée par des écoles ou des "pléiades" de créateurs, à d'autres littératures européennes, dominées par une figure majeure qui en produit la synthèse: c'est le cas, de manière tout à fait caractéristique, de Goethe pour l'Allemagne. "Nous n'avons pas (notre) Goethe", disent les Français, "mais voyez le bataillon serré de nos classiques". Le colloque d'Osnabrück s'est proposé d'interroger la construction et la transmission de l'idée de littérature en France et en Allemagne, en prenant pour point de départ cette asymétrie. L'un des volets est consacré à l'image de Goethe en France, avec une attention particulière portée à la commémoration du centenaire en 1932. L'autre porte sur l'image de la littérature française du XIXe siècle par la critique allemande. Les influences directes entre poètes et essayistes (Benjamin et Adorno face à la littérature française) ayant fait l'objet de nombreuses études, on privilégie la critique des universitaires romanistes, y compris les comparatistes, tels que Curtius, Auerbach, Friedrich, et celle des grandes revues
