Evangelical Space. Thomas Cole and the Landscape of Evangelical Print -- Abolitionist Mediascapes: The American Anti-Slavery Society and the Sacred Geography of Emancipation -- The Human Medium: Harriet Beecher Stowe and the New-York Evangelist -- Geographies of the Secular. Pilgrimage to the 'Secular Center': Tourism and the Calvinist Novel -- Cosmic Modernity: Henry David Thoreau, the Missionary Memoir, and the Heathen Within -- The Sensational Republic: Catholic Conspiracy and the Battle for the Great West -- Epilogue. "This monograph argues that Protestant evangelicals used the rise of mass print culture in the nineteenth century to produce a modern form of "sacred space" that moved beyond devotional literature to profoundly shape popular literature, art, and politics. The author places well-known works of literature and visual art-Thomas Cole's 1836 painting The Oxbow, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Henry David Thoreau's Walden, among others-into new contexts, showing the revelatory nature they contained for religious audiences. As the author demonstrates, the antebellum landscape meant more than physical territory to be conquered or new markets to be exploited: the land itself represented intense spiritual longing and struggle, a spiritual medium through which many Americans looked to see the state of their souls and the fate of the world unveiled"--

Introduction -- Land, looking, and futurity in the Hudson Valley -- Digging for gold : allegories of speculation on the Illinois frontier -- Picturing land and labor in the Old Northwest and New England -- Perilous prospects : speculation and landscape painting in Florida -- Painting and property on Prout's Neck -- Conclusion. "Speculative Landscapes offers the first comprehensive account of American artists' financial involvements in and creative responses to the nineteenth-century real estate economy. Examining the dealings of five painters who participated actively in this economy--Daniel Huntington, John Quidor, Eastman Johnson, Martin Johnson Heade, and Winslow Homer--Ross Barrett argues that the experience of property investment exposed artists to new ways of seeing and representing land, inspiring them to develop innovative figural, landscape, and marine paintings that radically reworked visual conventions. This approach moved beyond just aesthetics, however, and the book traces how artists creatively interrogated the economic, environmental, and cultural dynamics of American real estate capitalism. In doing so, Speculative Landscapes reveals how the provocative experience of land investment spurred painters to produce uniquely insightful critiques of the emerging real estate economy, critiques that uncovered its fiscal perils and social costs and imagined spaces outside the regime of private property"--

"The abandoned and forgotten landscapes of rural southwestern towns are the favored subjects of Rod Penner's paintings. The artist's keen eye combines photojournalism and Photorealism to create images of small-town America. His deft use of contrasts in his images-abandonment and hope, isolation and nostalgia-evokes memories of The Last Picture Show and elicits complex responses from viewers. "I'm interested in the look of things and the quality of being there," he says. "A moment that is completely frozen with all the variety of textures-rust on poles, crumbling asphalt, light hitting the grass." Penner's works are based on his photographs, digital video stills, and his on-site experience of the Texas Hill Country around his hometown of Marble Falls. He depicts desolate, often deserted locations, the character of old houses and abandoned buildings, weather, and unique geography. His chosen scenes are infused with a cinematic quality that is the result of the exquisite light that he captures with his meticulous process. "The finished paintings should evoke contrasting responses of melancholy and warmth, desolation and serenity," he says. The artist's hyperrealistic technique meticulously records both the iconic imagery and the beauty in the ashes of these once-prosperous streets and neighborhoods that still endure. These incredibly poignant scenes evoke a universalism, a collective experience seen through the lens of Americana. "You won't find any hidden or overt socio-political meaning in my work and at the same time I hope that by utilizing what I find in the American landscape I'm able to connect to viewers on a deeper psychological level.""--

John James Audubon: Lessons in Looking / Gregory Nobles -- Retracing Audubon: Eco-Conversations with Krista Elrick / Mary Anne Redding -- The Episodes / Krista Elrick -- Introduction: Getting Lost is the Beginning of Discovery -- Myself -- "The Swam of December 25th" -- In the Land of Ivory-Billed Woodpeckers -- Searching for Bachman's Warbler in the Low Country -- The Floridas -- Along the Missouri River -- "The Task is Accomplished" -- Roots and Wings: A Conversation with the Artist / Joanna Hurley and Mary Anne Redding. "The first artist to retrace the steps and revisit the landscapes of John James Audubon, from the East Coast, to the Gulf Coast, to the Heartland and Rocky Mountains. In 2010, when photographer Krista Elrick began traversing John James Audubon country in search of the birds the nineteenth-century American naturalist observed, painted, and wrote about, she encountered scarcely a sighting. Instead, she found the lushly forested watersheds and waterways that Audubon had passionately described in his journals vastly altered with many of the bird species extinct and their supporting habitat all but disappeared. Industrial buildings, parking lots, and strip malls had overtaken much of the area, edging out the natural world. It was a country no more. With a vintage Hasselblad film camera in hand, Elrick traveled more than 45,000 miles over ten years, following in the footsteps of Audubon as she sought clues to what had happened to these places and to the animals and peoples who once lived there."--Publisher description
