This volume sets El Saadawi's literary work within the context of her activism, in particular showing how her ideas for the renewal of society run through her writing. As a companion for reading her fiction and nonfiction, this volume contextualizes her work by taking into consideration the complexities of Egyptian society today - in particular, Islamic fundamentalism and women's status. It also introduces the current scholarly debate on ancient women's status. Chapters on individual novels look both at technique (oral literary traditions, woman's narrative, imagery) and topic (female circumci

"Offering Senegalese women's autobiographical discourses as an original contribution to the critical debate about identity and self-representation, Lisa McNee asks how Senegalese women represent themselves, rather than asking who has the right to represent them. Selfish Gifts describes and analyzes the public spaces for verbal self-representation that the Wolof form of panegyric (taasu) and written autobiographies offer to women. In contrasting performances of taasu to autobiographical works written in French, McNee addresses important issues in literary criticism, folklore studies, and anthropology, and develops a theory of an African aesthetic of self-representation."--BOOK JACKET

"Roger Allen provides a comprehensive introductory survey of literary texts in Arabic, from their unknown beginnings in the fifth century AD to the present day. The volume focuses on the major genres of Arabic literature, dealing with Islam's sacred text, the Qur'an, and a wealth of poetry, narrative prose, drama and criticism. Allen reveals the continuities that link the creative output of the present day to the illustrious literary heritage of the past and incorporates an enormously rich body of popular literature typified most famously by The Arabian Nights. The volume is informed by Western critical approaches, but within each chapter the emphasis is on the texts themselves, with extensive quotations in English translation. Reference features include a chronology and a guide to further reading. A revised and abridged version of Allen's acclaimed study, The Arabic Literary Heritage, this book provides an invaluable student introduction to a major non-Western literary tradition." catdir.loc.gov/catdir/description/cam0210/99053418.html

The collection of essays contained in this volume is written by a group of prominent scholars of Arabic literature. They explore various manifestations of traditional as well as modern and postmodern themes and techniques in Arabic literature. This is the first time the tripartite concepts of tradition, modernity, and postmodernity in Arabic literary works are explored and analyzed in one volume. It illustrates very clearly the fact that Arabic literature has kept abreast not only of the primarily modern literary movements in the West - that is amply illustrated by many studies to date - but also of the "postmodern condition." Scholars in the fields of Arabic literature, Islamic Studies, Comparative Literature, postmodern studies, among others, will find this collection of essays of great interest
