    Although midday is commonly associated with indolence or the languishing of both nature and humanity in stifling heat, Nicolas Perella shows that this connection—however real—is secondary to an archetypal encounter with noontide as a moment of existential crisis of spiritual as well as erotic dimensions. First tracing the literary presence of this image from classical and biblical antiquity to Nietzsche and other modern writers, he then analyzes the preoccupation with midday in the imagination of Italian authors from Dante to the present. When the sun is at its point of greatest strength, the blaze of noon is variously experienced as a wave of glory or a moment of dread, as an occasion for reaching out to the Absolute or retreating from the Abyss, as a source of fullness and energy or of emptiness and lethargy, that ultimately may either expand or annihilate being.     Dieser literaturwissenschaftliche Sammelband geht von der allgemeinen Beobachtung aus, dass im Zeitalter des «digitalen Autors» die von der strukturalistischen und poststrukturalistischen Theoriebildung vorgebrachte Forderung nach dem «Tod des Autors» von der unaufhaltsamen, unkontrollierbaren «Auflösung des Autors» samt seiner Autorität über den eigenen Text überholt zu werden scheint. Diese Tendenz hat dazu beigetragen, dass der Autorschaftsdebatte - initiiert durch deren Wiederaufnahme auf neugermanistischer Seite - in den vergangenen Jahren verstärkt erneut auch die Aufmerksamkeit der altgermanistischen und mediolatinistischen Forschung, der Editionsphilologie wie der Rechtsgeschichte zuteil geworden ist. Diesem sich neu eröffnenden Diskursrahmen trägt der Sammelband nun erstmals auch in romanistischer Perspektive Rechnung, indem seine Beiträge danach fragen, unter welchen Voraussetzungen, in welchen Kontexten, mit welchen Verfahren und in welchen Funktionszusammenhängen sich «Autorschaft» in den romanischen Literaturen des Mittelalters konstituiert. Im Zentrum der Untersuchungen steht dabei weniger der bereits gut erforschte Status des «Autors» an sich als vielmehr die für die Mittelalterforschung inzwischen zentrale Frage nach Verfahren und Mustern der Begründung von Autorschaft. Diese Fokussierung beruht auf der Annahme, dass die mittelalterliche Literatur grundsätzlich auf normative Konzepte referiert, deren exemplarischer Gültigkeitsnachweis den einzelnen Text wesentlich legitimiert. Autorität gewinnen die Texte dabei in der Regel durch Strategien autoritativer Absicherung - etwa durch den Bezug auf vorbildliche auctores, auf institutionelle Machtfaktoren sowie durch Strategien der Selbst-Authentifizierung

Starting on the sand of that very shore with Dante, John Freccero begins retracing the famous voyage recounted by the poet nearly 700 years ago. Freccero follows pilgrim and poet through the Comedy and then beyond, inviting readers both uninitiated and accomplished to join him in navigating this complex medieval masterpiece and its influence on later literature. Perfectly impenetrable in its poetry and unabashedly ambitious in its content, the Divine Comedy is the cosmos collapsed on itself, heavy with dense matter and impossible to expand. Yet Dante's great triumph is seen in the tiny, subtle fragments that make up the seamless whole, pieces that the poet painstakingly sewed together to form a work that insinuates itself into the reader and inspires the work of the next author. Freccero magnifies the most infinitesimal elements of that intricate construction to identify self-similar parts, revealing the full breadth of the great poem. Using this same technique, Freccero then turns to later giants of literature- Petrarch, Machiavelli, Donne, Joyce, and Svevo-demonstrating how these authors absorbed these smallest parts and reproduced Dante in their own work. In the process, he confronts questions of faith, friendship, gender, politics, poetry, and sexuality, so that traveling with Freccero, the reader will both cross unknown territory and reimagine familiar faces, swimming always in Dante's wake"--
