The book specifies a corpus architecture, including annotation and querying techniques, and its implementation. The corpus architecture is developed for empirical studies of translations, and beyond those for the study of texts which are inter-lingually comparable, particularly texts of similar registers. The compiled corpus, CroCo, is a resource for research and is, with some copyright restrictions, accessible to other research projects. Most of the research was undertaken as part of a DFG-Project into linguistic properties of translations. Fundamentally, this research project was a corpus-based investigation into the language pair English-German. The long-term goal is a contribution to the study of translation as a contact variety, and beyond this to language comparison and language contact more generally with the language pair English - German as our object languages. This goal implies a thorough interest in possible specific properties of translations, and beyond this in an empirical translation theory. The methodology developed is not restricted to the traditional exclusively system-based comparison of earlier days, where real-text excerpts or constructed examples are used as mere illustrations of assumptions and claims, but instead implements an empirical research strategy involving structured data (the sub-corpora and their relationships to each other, annotated and aligned on various theoretically motivated levels of representation), the formation of hypotheses and their operationalizations, statistics on the data, critical examinations of their significance, and interpretation against the background of system-based comparisons and other independent sources of explanation for the phenomena observed. Further applications of the resource developed in computational linguistics are outlined and evaluated

Since their first publication in 1593, the complexity and beauty of the verses by Valencian poet Ausiàs March have constituted a challenge for his readers. In this study we present an analysis of the poet's language using an innovative methodology in the field of literary studies: the analysis of word combinations - collocations - with the support of ICT. Based on a structurally/morphosyntactically-tagged, lemmatized corpus, we carried out an automatic extraction of the collocations in March's work by means of a search engine optimized to work with the Old Catalan language. Thus, on the basis of the more frequent characteristic patterns of this language, we were able to obtain complete lists of collocations - in a broad sense, as defined by Sinclair in his first research studies. Subsequently, we used a control corpus in order to contextualize them and describe their usage, which allowed us to establish whether the frequent combinations found belong specifically to the author - as an intrinsic part of his style -, or to the general linguistic usage of his age - as part of established Old Catalan phraseology. Our research showed us the difficulties of studying the phraseology of old languages, as well as the productivity of the collocational analysis of an author's language

Biographical note: Stefan Th. Gries, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Review text: "Gries has diligently compiled a work of great use and interest. It is relevant above all to linguistic students and researchers, and can readily act as a textbook for taught courses. It should be noted that the book is equally useful as a reference guide, with the analysis scenarios sufficiently well labeled and organized so that the reader can dip into it as and when necessary, or as a complete set of exercises which the reader can work through section by section." Andrew Caines in: Linguist List 22.412 Main description: This book is the revised and extended second edition of Statistics for Linguistics with R. The comprehensive revision includes new small sections on programming topics that facilitate statistical analysis, the addition of a variety of statistical functions readers can apply to their own data, and a revision of overview sections on statistical tests and regression modeling. The main revision is a complete rewrite of the chapter on multifactorial approaches, which now contains sections on linear regression, binary and ordinal logistic regression, multinomial and Poisson regression, and repeated-measures ANOVA.The revisions are completed by a new visual tool to identify the right statistical test for a given problem and data set.
