    Der Wandel der Absatzmärkte von Verkäufer- zu Käufermärkten geht mit einer zunehmenden Dynamik der relevanten Umweltfaktoren einher. Da die Erzeugnisse technisch immer ähnlicher werden, konkurrieren zukünftig am Markt nicht mehr Produkte, sondern mehr oder weniger effektive und effiziente Organisations- und Lenkungsstrukturen. Insbesondere Unternehmen, die komplexe Erzeugnisse nach Kundenspezifikation in Einzel- oder Kleinserienfertigung herstellen, bewegen sich in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen der erforderlichen Kundennähe im Leistungsprogramm, der Komplexität des Produktionsprozesses und dessen Effizienz. Ein Ansatzpunkt zur Lösung dieses Zielkonfliktes liegt im Management der Komplexität in heterogenen Produktionssystemen.

    Banks have progressively evolved from being standalone institutions to being subsidiaries of increasingly complex financial conglomerates. We conjecture and provide evidence that the organizational complexity of the family of a bank is a fundamental driver of the business model of the bank itself, as reflected in the management of the bank's own balance sheet. Using micro-data on global banks with branch operations in the United States, we show that branches of conglomerates in more complex families have a markedly lower lending sensitivity to funding shocks. The balance sheet management strategies of banks are very much determined by the structure of the organizations the banks belong to. The complexity of the conglomerate can change the scale of the lending channel for a large global bank by more than 30 percent.

    Eine gängige These in Bezug auf den Beratermarkt lautet, dass Beratungsunternehmen entweder als (große) Generalisten oder (kleine) Spezialisten erfolgreich sein können. Der vorliegende Beitrag widerspricht dieser These und schlägt mit dem Modell der "virtuellen Beratungsorganisation" einen dritten Weg vor. Auf Basis eines komplexitätstheoretischen Modells wird anhand der Fallstudie der ECG Management Consulting GmbH argumentiert, dass sich aus Netzwerken von kleinen Beratungsunternehmen projektweise virtuelle Beratungsorganisationen zusammen finden können, die in einem organisatorischen Zustand am "Rand des Chaos" erfolgreich große Projekte durchführen. It is argued that either large generalists or small specialists are successful in today's consulting markets. We challenge this thesis by suggesting a "third route" to success: the "virtual consulting organization at the edge of chaos". At medium levels of connectivity and formalization of interaction among collaborating partners high levels of client satisfaction can be achieved in large projects. Our argumentation is built on a complexity-theory-based model and illustrated by the case of Berlin based ECG Management Consulting GmbH.

    The increasing complexity of the modern world creates both higher risks and new interdependencies in the socioeconomic environment. To cope with these challenges powerful new tools must be applied to find sustainable solutions. System dynamics is a field that offers potential assistance in dealing with complex issues. However, managers and politicians often lack the knowledge and necessary skills to apply quantitative methods in their decision-making process. In contrast, qualitative approaches are easily understood and handled but have limited capacities for analysis. To address this gap, we have developed a bundle of tools tailored for managers and politicians facing complex problems. These tools enable executives to recognize effective levers and assess potential consequences of specific interventions in a highly interconnected system. The approach detailed here equips decision makers with a powerful method to develop, test, and communicate strategies to find long-term sustainable solutions for complex issues in business and society

    We develop a model of satisficing with evaluation errors that incorporates complexity at the level of individual alternatives. We test the model predictions in a novel data set with information on hundreds of millions of chess moves by experienced players. Consistent with the theory, complex optimal moves are chosen less frequently than simpler ones. Choice frequencies of suboptimal moves follow the opposite pattern. The former finding distinguishes satisficing from a large class of maximization-based models. We further document that skill and time moderate the adverse effect of complexity, and that they complement each other in doing so. Finally, we provide evidence that suboptimal behavior also hinges on the composition of the choice set but not its size. Our findings help to shed some of the first light on the importance of complexity outside of the laboratory

    Drawing on experiences of the author in Interreg co-operation projects, this paper relates project management practice in two case study projects to selected key topics of project management theory, resulting into a series of recommendations primarily based on personal reflection. The case study projects were both funded by the South Baltic Cross-border Co-operation Programme 2007 - 2013. This paper presents the strategic environment of the case study projects. The framework of public requirements, the geographic distribution of the project team and the concept of a multi-organisational project set-up, lead to increased complexity. In assessing this specific project environment, the paper evaluates the relative importance of the project management knowledge areas of the PMBOK® and in doing so, putting a focus on project sustainability management as a significant area for further efforts towards enhancing project management standards and indeed, long-term project success. The balanced matrix of the multi-organisational structure required management awareness of the lead partner for enacting non-formal authority and empowerment, resulting in the importance of building trust. Since stakeholder influence and needs were critical for project success, this paper presents a process for analyzing stakeholders to prioritize and develop individual strategies. The concept of the project lifecycle is established in the PM standards of the PMI® and APM. In transferring these standard project lifecycles to the considered Interreg-projects, a major distinction noted, is the timespan between an application for funding and (in case of success) the start of project implementation. This period can take several months, in which the project risks to lose momentum. Another critical, yet largely neglected phase is after the project closure, a time when promised benefits for stakeholders potentially materialize. This paper recommends strengthening the role of the 'program' in terms of project management qualification, continuous improvement and cross-project learning. Finally, the project management maturity is assessed, recommending the following areas for further development: Benefit, Stake-holder and Risk Management.
