    Use your imagination! The demand is as important as it is confusing. What is the imagination? What is its value? Where does it come from? And where is it going in a time when even the obscene mseems overdone and passé?This book takes up these questions and argues for the centrality of imagination in humanmcognition. It traces the development of the imagination in Kant’s critical philosophy (particularly the Critique of Aesthetic Judgment) and claims that the insights of Kantian aesthetic theory, especially concerning the nature of creativity, common sense, and genius, influenced the development of nineteenth-century American philosophy.The book identifies the central role of the imagination in the philosophy of Peirce, a role often overlooked in analytic treatments of his thought. The final chapters pursue the observation made by Kant and Peirce that imaginative genius is a type of natural gift (ingenium) and must in some way be continuous with the creative force of nature. It makes this final turn by way of contemporary studies of metaphor, embodied cognition, and cognitive neuroscience

    In recent decades the conceptualization of space and place as social constructs, rather than static settings has received significant attention and has been re-evaluated with an emphasis on the cultural, social and political practice. This shift moves away from regarding space as fixed, unchanging container towards a realization that space is always inextricably linked with social practice and cultural signification. Thus, the study of spatial practices interrogates human action in different spaces, human agency in the production of space, and space in its capacity to prompt human action. By focusing on human action in manipulating and subverting space, and thereby creating multiple coexisting and overlapping spatialities, the interest also shifts from semiotic correlations in cultural expressions to events, practices, material and medial embodiment of culture.This collection of essays approaches the study of space and place from a historically inclusive perspective; it gives new insights into historical shifts and changes in the construction and perception of space as well as historical developments and diachonicity of literary, social, and architectural sites and places. It aims to gather a number of case studies in order to collect historically concrete evidence of such spatial practices as reflected in literature and art as well as in sources pertaining to the social and political life of premodern, early modern, and modern era

Von einer bloßen Idee wandelte sie sich zu einem handfesten Gegenstand, der nicht mehr nur gemalt, sondern bewohnt, gestaltet und zerstört werden kann. Im Anschluss an aktuelle Diskussionen über das Entwerfen der »Sache« Landschaft zeichnet Thomas Hauck diesen Wandel vom Bild zum Garten, zur Kulturlandschaft und zum urbanen Parksystem als einen Prozess der Vergegenständlichung einer ästhetischen Idee nach.     Künstlerische Selbstverletzung - seit den 1960er Jahren international fester Bestandteil der Performance Art - polarisiert, verstört und wirft vor allem Fragen nach Handlungsmotivationen auf.Rosemarie Brucher deutet dieses radikale Phänomen als Bewältigungsversuch bedrohter Autonomie und damit in erster Linie als Ermächtigungsstrategie. In dieser Ambivalenz aus Subjektermächtigung und Naturunterwerfung lässt sich künstlerische Selbstverletzung vor dem Hintergrund von Immanuel Kants Ästhetik des Erhabenen lesen, was die Autorin exemplarisch an VALIE EXPORT und Stelarc darlegt. Eine solche Bezugsetzung eröffnet nicht nur einen innovativen Zugang zu dieser Kunstform, sondern wirft zugleich auch ein neues Licht auf Kants Erhabenheitskonzeption.

    Das Leitmotiv des Buches ist die Einsicht, dass die Künste, auch die Musik, von Haus aus nicht nur Erkenntnis-Gegenstände sondern selber Erkenntnis-Quellen sind. Dieser Sachverhalt besteht aber aus einer Vielfalt von Aspekten, in der Zusammenhänge und Unterschiede zugleich im Spiel sind, was hier an drei Paradigmen: Schelling, Nietzsche und Kant, gezeigt wird. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um eine historische Entwicklung, also ein Nacheinander, sondern um das Nebeneinander gleichermaßen legitimer Gepräge. Am Ende des Buches steht eine Konkretisierung der Schelling-Thesen an Bildbeispielen, die von antiken Bildwerken über Caspar David Friedrich und William Turner bis zu Paul Klee reichen. "Der Philosoph und Kunsttheoretiker Dieter Jähnig hat einen bemerkenswerten Text, eine Art Summe seiner Forschung zum Verhältnis zwischen Philosophie und Kunst vorgelegt. Bemerkenswert ist dieser Text aus mehreren Gründen, zum einen, weil er - mit Schelling und Nietzsche - zeigt, dass Kunst nicht zum Objekt gemacht werden darf, sondern selbst eine Quelle des Weltverstehens und der Zeitkritik ist, zum anderen, weil er - mit Platon, Schelling und Nietzsche - in souveräner Weise den mimetischen Charakter der Kunst nicht als Nachahmung, sondern als schöpferische Form des Lebens darstellt. Schließlich zeigt Jähnig im Blick auf Kants dritte Kritik, dass die Kunst der Philosophie Grenzen setzt. Das Stichwort hier ist ›Freiheit nicht als Selbstbestimmung sondern als Gunst‹. All dies sind Schlaglichter einer gedanklichen Helligkeit, die kein anderer mir bekannter Text auf das Verhältnis der Kunst zur Philosophie wirft.     In recent decades the conceptualization of space and place as social constructs, rather than static settings has received significant attention and has been re-evaluated with an emphasis on the cultural, social and political practice. This shift moves away from regarding space as fixed, unchanging container towards a realization that space is always inextricably linked with social practice and cultural signification. Thus, the study of spatial practices interrogates human action in different spaces, human agency in the production of space, and space in its capacity to prompt human action. By focusing on human action in manipulating and subverting space, and thereby creating multiple coexisting and overlapping spatialities, the interest also shifts from semiotic correlations in cultural expressions to events, practices, material and medial embodiment of culture.This collection of essays approaches the study of space and place from a historically inclusive perspective; it gives new insights into historical shifts and changes in the construction and perception of space as well as historical developments and diachonicity of literary, social, and architectural sites and places. It aims to gather a number of case studies in order to collect historically concrete evidence of such spatial practices as reflected in literature and art as well as in sources pertaining to the social and political life of premodern, early modern, and modern era.

    Künstlerische Selbstverletzung - seit den 1960er Jahren international fester Bestandteil der Performance Art - polarisiert, verstört und wirft vor allem Fragen nach Handlungsmotivationen auf.Rosemarie Brucher deutet dieses radikale Phänomen als Bewältigungsversuch bedrohter Autonomie und damit in erster Linie als Ermächtigungsstrategie. In dieser Ambivalenz aus Subjektermächtigung und Naturunterwerfung lässt sich künstlerische Selbstverletzung vor dem Hintergrund von Immanuel Kants Ästhetik des Erhabenen lesen, was die Autorin exemplarisch an VALIE EXPORT und Stelarc darlegt. Eine solche Bezugsetzung eröffnet nicht nur einen innovativen Zugang zu dieser Kunstform, sondern wirft zugleich auch ein neues Licht auf Kants Erhabenheitskonzeption.

    In recent decades the conceptualization of space and place as social constructs, rather than static settings has received significant attention and has been re-evaluated with an emphasis on the cultural, social and political practice. This shift moves away from regarding space as fixed, unchanging container towards a realization that space is always inextricably linked with social practice and cultural signification. Thus, the study of spatial practices interrogates human action in different spaces, human agency in the production of space, and space in its capacity to prompt human action. By focusing on human action in manipulating and subverting space, and thereby creating multiple coexisting and overlapping spatialities, the interest also shifts from semiotic correlations in cultural expressions to events, practices, material and medial embodiment of culture.This collection of essays approaches the study of space and place from a historically inclusive perspective; it gives new insights into historical shifts and changes in the construction and perception of space as well as historical developments and diachonicity of literary, social, and architectural sites and places. It aims to gather a number of case studies in order to collect historically concrete evidence of such spatial practices as reflected in literature and art as well as in sources pertaining to the social and political life of premodern, early modern, and modern era.

Dabei handelt es sich nicht um eine historische Entwicklung, also ein Nacheinander, sondern um das Nebeneinander gleichermaßen legitimer Gepräge. Am Ende des Buches steht eine Konkretisierung der Schelling-Thesen an Bildbeispielen, die von antiken Bildwerken über Caspar David Friedrich und William Turner bis zu Paul Klee reichen. »Der Philosoph und Kunsttheoretiker Dieter Jähnig hat einen bemerkenswerten Text, eine Art Summe seiner Forschung zum Verhältnis zwischen Philosophie und Kunst vorgelegt. Bemerkenswert ist dieser Text aus mehreren Gründen, zum einen, weil er - mit Schelling und Nietzsche - zeigt, dass Kunst nicht zum Objekt gemacht werden darf, sondern selbst eine Quelle des Weltverstehens und der Zeitkritik ist, zum anderen, weil er - mit Platon, Schelling und Nietzsche - in souveräner Weise den mimetischen Charakter der Kunst nicht als Nachahmung, sondern als schöpferische Form des Lebens darstellt.     Ich werde im Folgenden zunächst (1.) die Konstellation des Zukunftswissens der späten 1790er Jahre an den miteinander sowohl korrespondierenden als auch kontrastierenden Positionsbestimmungen Immanuel Kants und Johann Gottfried Herders zur Erkennbarkeit und Darstellbarkeit der Zukunft erläutern. Diese Problematik werde ich dann (2.) anhand von Friedrich Schillers Wallenstein-Trilogie (1798/99) diskutieren. Hier spielt Zukünftigkeit auf verschiedenen Ebenen eine zentrale Rolle – als strategisches Planungswissen, als divinatorische Zeichendeutung, aber auch im Einsatz von Vorausdeutungen als dramaturgisches Mittel –, so dass sich Schillers Drama auf exemplarische Weise futurologisch lesen lässt.

    It can hardly be disputed that the theme of popularity is central to the Enlightenment. Popularity is the sociality equivalent to the individual appeal: 'Dare to know.' Parallel to this runs the following imperative: 'Dare to encourage your neighbour and your fellow man and woman to think on their own – even though they do not belong to the erudite elite.' It is also undeniable that Romantic authors and philosophers polemically attempted to tear down the popularity project of the Enlightenment, their main criticism being its tendency towards mediocrity. It is less well known that Romantic authors and philosophers themselves, around the turn of the nineteenth century, made popularity their central concern. To quote Friedrich Schlegel in the journal Athenaeum: 'The time of popularity has come.' This article explores the Romantics' alternative conception of popularity, with especial reference to Johann Gottlieb Fichte and the Grimm Brothers. To this end, it is helpful to reconstruct the background of the Romantic attempt to create an independent concept of popularity: the debate between Immanuel Kant and the German popular philosopher Christian Garve on the necessity, possibilities, and limits of popularity.
