A Workshop on Theory at ICIDS 2009 -- Workshop on Authoring Methods and Conception in Interactive Storytelling. The rich programme of ICIDS 2009, comprising invited talks, technical pres- tations and posters, demonstrations, and co-located post-conference workshops clearly underscores the event’s status as premier international meeting in the domain. It thereby con?rms the decision taken by the Constituting Committee of the conference series to take the step forward: out of the national cocoons of its precursors, ICVS and TIDSE, and towards an itinerant platform re?ecting its global constituency. This move re?ects the desire and the will to take on the challenge to stay on the lookout, critically re?ect upon and integrate views and ideas,?ndingsandexperiences, andtopromoteinterdisciplinaryexchange, while ensuring overall coherence and maintaining a sense of direction. This is a signi?cant enterprise: The challenges sought are multifarious and must be addressed consistently at all levels. The desire to involve all research communitiesandstakeholdersmustbematchedbyacknowledgingthedi?erences in established practises and by providing suitable means of guidance and int- duction, exposition and direct interaction at the event itself and of lasting (and increasingly:living) documentation, of which the present proceedings are but an important part.

This textbook contains the proceedings from the 3rd International Conference on Technologies for Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment (TIDSE 2006). The contributions are grouped into six sections, which include subjects like virtual characters, story authoring, narrative systems, and examples of their application. During recent years, Interactive Digital Storytelling has evolved as a prospering - search topic, banding together formerly disjoined disciplines stemming from the arts and humanities as well as computer science. The subject of this book is of course strongly related to the notion of ‘storytelling’, which has been used as an effective means for the communication of knowledge and social values, ever since the early history of humankind. It also tries to build a bridge between current academic trends, for example, by investigating and formalizing narrative aspects of computer games, and by its developments for the experience-based design of human–media interaction in general. Starting with a scientific workshop at national level in 2000, the Digital Sto- telling group at ZGDV Darmstadt originated TIDSE, the International Conference for Technologies in Interactive Digital Storytelling and Entertainment. TIDSE 2003, TIDSE 2004, and TIDSE 2006 continued this series, and provided the latest research outcomes and indications for its usage within entertainment applications.

Interactive media allow and at the same time require new forms of dramaturgy. Heide Hagebölling develops a new understanding of dramaturgy - so called "Interactive Dramaturgy" or "Expanded Dramaturgy". Beyond the traditional concept "Interactive Dramaturgies" is focussing on aesthetic, narrative, structural and communicative elements that develop in interactive situations and multimedia environments. A collection of original contributions by internationally renownend multimedia authors, designers, and artists outline design concepts and strategies. Outstanding case studies and media projects are analyzed, covering a broad range of both applications and genres: culture, art and education; museums and exhibitions; film, TV, games and entertainment; augmented reality and hybrid environments. "Interactive dramaturgies" go beyond the well established term of interactive storytelling. They carefully define and create the rules of altered roles and required competences of both authors and users in a new communicational setting. The publication provides designers, authors, artists, theoreticians, media critics and students interested in interactive media with new approaches and views in multimedia content and design. Prof. Roy Ascott, University of Plymouth; University of California, L.A.:"Indispensable to anyone wishing to understand the multi-dimensional complexities and challenges of interactive media at its cutting edge, Heide Hagebölling’s book is a brilliant collection of writings from many inspired and inspiring sources. The context of dramaturgy, in which these texts are set, fruitfully elicits propositions and reflections over a wide range of significant issues: from innovative narrative structures, interactive games, and new approaches to film, TV and theatre, to radical learning strategies, museum design and navigation, creativity in data space, and the central issues of content building." Key Topics: Interactive Dramaturgies Cultural Learning Museum&Media MediaTecture&HybridSpaces Gaming&Interaction Interactive Film&Television Web-based Literature&Stories Men-Machine Interaction Interactive Content Design Key Elements: Non linearity, orientation and navigation Space and time in interactive media Individual reception and multi-user-platform Narrative perspectives and individual views Polyformal concepts Hypermedia Augmented reality and hybrid spaces Interface design Multi- and intermedia Networks and open structures Design for intercultural communication Heide Hagebölling, media-designer and communication scientist, is Professor for Video and Interactive Media at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, Germany, of which she is co-founder. Her professional and academic work covers aspects of art, culture, and media. She participated i.

During recent years, literary texts in electronic and networked media have been a focal point of literary scholarship, using varying terminology. In this book, the contributions of internationally renowned scholars and authors from Germany, USA, France, Finland, Spain and Switzerland review the ruptures and upheavals of literary communication within this context. The articles in the book focus on questions such as: In which literary projects can we discover a new quality of literariness? What are the terminological and methodological means to examine these literatures? How can we productively link the logics of the play of literary texts and their reception in the reading process? What is the relationship of literary writing and programming? With contributions by Jean-Pierre Balpe, Susanne Berkenheger, Friedrich W. Block, Philippe Bootz, Laura Borràs Castanyer, Markku Eskelinen, Frank Furtwängler, Peter Gendolla, Loss Pequeño Glazier, Fotis Jannidis, Thomas Kamphusmann, Mela Kocher, Marie-Laure Ryan, Jörgen Schäfer, Roberto Simanowski and Noah Wardrip-Fruin.

Virtual Travel: Being Not Quite 'There' -- Virtual Environment: Constraints and Possibilities.-Space and Place in Cyberspace -- Culturally Significant Presence -- What Have We Learnt from Game-Style Interaction? -- Playing With The Past: Case Studies -- Mixed Histories, Augmented Pasts -- 8. Evaluating Virtual Heritage in the Future -- An Open Conclusion -- Index. Since the turn of this century (and even earlier), a plethora of projects have arisen to promise us bold new interactive adventures and immersive travel into the past with digital environments (using mixed, virtual or augmented reality, as well as computer games). In Playing with the Past: Into the Future Erik Champion surveys past attempts to communicate history and heritage through virtual environments and suggests new technology and creative ideas for more engaging and educational games and virtual learning environments. This second edition builds on and updates the first edition with new game discussions, surveys, design frameworks, and theories on how cultural heritage could be experienced in digital worlds, via museums, mobile phones, or the Metaverse. Recent games and learning environments are reviewed, with provocative discussion of new and emerging promises and challenges.
