This book provides a clear historical and theoretical framework for reading three important novels published in Britain in the second half of the nineteenth century. Examining the novels by Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell, the book offers an analysis of their strategies for radical reforms and for the restructuring of society and politics through improvements in the living and working conditions of the working class. The Industrial Novels begins with an introduction of the Industrial Revolution, which is then followed by chapters devoted to a detailed discussion of each novel. Through this, the book explores the negative social, political and economic effects of industrialization and urbanization, as reflected in Charlotte Brontë's Shirley (1849), Charles Dickens' Hard Times (1854), and Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South (1855). As such, the book will be of interest to academics and students in the fields of both literature and sociology Intro -- Table of Contents -- Acknowledgements -- Preface -- Introduction -- Chapter One -- Chapter Two -- Chapter Three -- Conclusion -- Bibliography

"In this book, Jon Mee proposes a new literary-cultural history of the Industrial Revolution in Britain from the late-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. Against the stubbornly persistent image of "dark satanic mills," in many ways so comforting to literary Romanticism, Jon Mee provides fresh, revisionary account of the Industrial Revolution as a story of unintended consequences. Reading a wide range of texts-economic, medical, and more conventionally "literary" ones-with a distinctive focus on their circulation through networks and institutions, Mee shows how a project of enlightened liberal reform, articulated in Britain's emerging manufacturing towns, led unexpectedly to coercive forms of machine productivity, a pattern that might be seen repeating in the digital technologies in our own time. Instead of treating the Industrial Revolution as Romanticism's "other," Mee shows how writing, practices, and institutions emanating from the industrial towns developed a new kind of knowledge economy, one where "literary" debates played a key role, especially through local literary and philosophical societies who were important transmission hubs for the circulation of knowledge. Mee provides a new perspective on the development of social relations across the period, challenging the idea that the Industrial Revolution as the result of some kind of prior, ideological intention. The book will interest literary scholars concerned with the relation of Romanticism to Britain's social and economic upheavals; social and economic historians studying the underpinnings of the Industrial Revolution; and cultural historians tracing the relation between social networks and political philosophy."

"Victorian Time: Technologies, Standardizations, Catastrophes" is a collection of essays that reflect on how the literature of the Victorian era engaged with new ways of thinking about time. These essays examine how Victorian fiction registers the psychological adjustment involved in keeping pace with industrial time as time-saving technologies aimed at making economic life more efficient, signalling the dawn of a new age of accelerated time. Examining canonical realist novels, popular literature and science fiction, these essays reveal an often ambivalent and complex response to the onset of 'industrial time' and the birth of a modern time-consciousness. Documenting the era's literary responses to the impact and rate of industrial progress and the potentialities of technology these essays trace the Victorians' radical shift in time perception from industrial novels at the onset of industrialization through to fin de siecle narratives of dystopia and apocalypse
