    Die Schilderung physischer Gewalttaten wie Folter, Mord und Hinrichtung gilt als charakteristisch für die Literatur der 2. Hälfte des 1. Jhs. n. Chr., wurde aber bislang kaum befriedigend analysiert. Insbesondere aufzählende Abschnitte aus Senecas De ira und Lucans De bello civile sorgen für Irritation. Darum sucht dieses Buch die Annäherung an antike Rezeptionshaltungen.Die systematische Auseinandersetzung mit der Rhetoriklehre zeigt, dass Aufzählungen die visuelle Imagination unterstützen und zur Affekterregung beitragen. Lust und Staunen sind ein ambivalent bewertetes Begriffspaar, mit dem die antike Rezeptionsästhetik die Inszenierung und Betrachtung von Gewalt charakterisiert. Wertevorstellungen wiederum werden in verkürzten Aufzählungen von exempla veranschaulicht. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen erweist ein close reading Senecas und Lucans, dass die Anschaulichkeit ihrer Texte auf der Reduktion auf konkrete Details beruht, die aber gerade durch die Häufung in Aufzählungen ihre affektive Wirkung entfalten.     Homicide has many social and psychological implications that vary from culture to culture and which change as people accept new ideas concerning guilt, responsibility, and the causes of crime. A study of attitudes toward homicide is therefore a method of examining social values in a specific setting. Homicide in American Fiction, 1798–1860 is the first book to contrast psychological assumptions of imaginative writers with certain social and intellectual currents in an attempt to integrate social attitudes toward such diverse subjects as human evil, moral responsibility, criminal insanity, social causes of crime, dueling, lynching, the "unwritten law" of a husband’s revenge, and capital punishment. In addition to works of literary distinction by Cooper, Hawthorne, Irving, and Poe, among others, Davis considers a large body of cheap popular fiction generally ignored in previous studies of the literature of this period. This is an engrossing study of fiction as a reflection of and a commentary on social problems and as an influence shaping general beliefs and opinions.

Die Schilderung physischer Gewalttaten wie Folter, Mord und Hinrichtung gilt als charakteristisch für die Literatur der 2. Hälfte des 1. Jhs. n. Chr., wurde aber bislang kaum befriedigend analysiert. Insbesondere aufzählende Abschnitte aus Senecas De ira und Lucans De bello civili sorgen für Irritation. Darum sucht dieses Buch die Annäherung an antike Rezeptionshaltungen.Die systematische Auseinandersetzung mit der Rhetoriklehre zeigt, dass Aufzählungen die visuelle Imagination unterstützen und zur Affekterregung beitragen. Lust und Staunen sind ein ambivalent bewertetes Begriffspaar, mit dem die antike Rezeptionsästhetik die Inszenierung und Betrachtung von Gewalt charakterisiert. Wertevorstellungen wiederum werden in verkürzten Aufzählungen von exempla veranschaulicht. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen erweist ein close reading Senecas und Lucans, dass die Anschaulichkeit ihrer Texte auf der Reduktion auf konkrete Details beruht, die aber gerade durch die Häufung in Aufzählungen ihre affektive Wirkung entfalten. Der Rezipient erhält so ein vielfältiges Assoziationsangebot und kann sich aktiv an der Erschaffung einer caedis imago beteiligen Often noticed, frequently criticized, the descriptions of physical violence in Seneca's philosophical work De ira and Lucan's civil war epic De bello civili irritate until today.     Die Schilderung physischer Gewalttaten wie Folter, Mord und Hinrichtung gilt als charakteristisch für die Literatur der 2. Hälfte des 1. Jhs. n. Chr., wurde aber bislang kaum befriedigend analysiert. Insbesondere aufzählende Abschnitte aus Senecas De ira und Lucans De bello civile sorgen für Irritation. Darum sucht dieses Buch die Annäherung an antike Rezeptionshaltungen.Die systematische Auseinandersetzung mit der Rhetoriklehre zeigt, dass Aufzählungen die visuelle Imagination unterstützen und zur Affekterregung beitragen. Lust und Staunen sind ein ambivalent bewertetes Begriffspaar, mit dem die antike Rezeptionsästhetik die Inszenierung und Betrachtung von Gewalt charakterisiert. Wertevorstellungen wiederum werden in verkürzten Aufzählungen von exempla veranschaulicht. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen erweist ein close reading Senecas und Lucans, dass die Anschaulichkeit ihrer Texte auf der Reduktion auf konkrete Details beruht, die aber gerade durch die Häufung in Aufzählungen ihre affektive Wirkung entfalten.     The critical conundrum launched by In cold blood -- The evolution of American literary naturalism -- First-wave naturalism and the homicide novel, 1899-1925 -- Second-wave naturalism and the homicide novel, 1930-1960 -- The old naturalism meets the new journalism : Capote's In cold blood -- Mailer's big "non-book" : The Executioner's song as faux naturalism -- "Variations on a theme by Capote" : the 20th century, part II -- "The chickens come home to roost" : naturalism enters its third century. "With the 1965 publication of In Cold Blood, Truman Capote declared that he broke new literary ground. But, despite its kinship with the New Journalism, Capote's "nonfiction novel" belongs to the long tradition of literary naturalism, originating in the work of nineteenth-century French novelist Emile Zola. Now, Naturalism offers a particular response to the increasing problem of violence in American life and the sociological implications of that violence. This book traces the origins of the fact-based homicide novel tradition that emerged in the mainstream of twentieth-century American literature with works such as Frank Norris's McTeague and Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. At the heart of these novels is a young man isolated from every possible community who acts out in desperate circumstances against someone who reflects his isolation. A tension develops in the narrative between how society views this killer and the way he is viewed by the novelist, who shows the protagonist as both victimizer and victim. The crimes central to these narratives epitomize the vast gap between those who can aspire to the so-called "American dream" and those with no realistic chance of achieving it"--
