    El siglo XX fue, según Eric Hobsbawm, la "época de los extremos": guerras, genocidios, opciones políticas extremas y la llegada al poder de regímenes autoritarios, la amenaza nuclear, la sobreexplotación de los recursos naturales, violencia, pobreza y hambrunas extremas de un lado, riquezas inmensas y un fuerte crecimiento económico, del otro. Todas estas facetas de lo extremo han dejado profundas huellas en los ámbitos artísticos y culturales, un hecho del que España y Austria no quedaron al margen. Ambos países sufrieron durante el siglo XX cambios profundos, conflictos armados, guerras y dictaduras autoritarias cuyas consecuencias siguen vivas en las respectivas memorias colectivas hasta hoy. El presente volumen está dedicado a aquellas trazas dejadas por los extremos y a sus realizaciones sociales, políticas e ideológicas en los terrenos de la literatura, la lingüística, el arte, la música, el cine, la historiografía y la filosofía. El punto de encuentro interdisciplinario entre las diferentes propuestas se sitúa en la influencia de la historia real en cada uno de estos ámbitos.
