"For over four decades, Leo Marx's work has focused on the relationship between technology and culture in 19th- and 20th-century America. His research helped to define - and continues to enrich - the area of American studies concerned with the links between scientific and technological advances, and the way society and culture both determine these links. The Machine in the Garden fully examines the differences between the "pastoral" and "progressive" ideals that characterized early 19th-century American culture, and which ultimately evolved into the basis for many of the environmental and nuclear debates of contemporary society."--Jacket

This collection traces the vicissitudes of the cultural preoccupation with death in nineteenth-century US writing and examines how mortality served paradoxically as a site on which identity and subjectivity were productively rethought. Topics include race- and gender-based investigations into the textual representation of death, imaginative constructions and re-constructions of social practice with regard to loss and memorialisation, and literary re-conceptualisations of death forced by personal and national trauma

Since the beginning of the Western tradition in drama, dominant cultures have theatrically represented marginal or foreign racial groups as "other" & different form "normal" people, not completely human, uncivilized, quaint, exotic, comic. Playwrights and audiences alike have been fascinated with racial difference, and this fascination has depended upon a process of fetishization. By the time Asians appeared in the United States, the framework for their constructed Lotus Blossom and Charlie Chan stereotypes had preceded them

"In her introduction, Sybil Kein immediately addresses perhaps the book's most important - and controversial - question: who are the Creoles? The answer is not clear-cut. Of European, African, or Caribbean mixed descent, they are a people of color and Francophone dialect native to south Lousiana; and though their history dates from the late 1600s, they have been neglected in the literature. Creole is a project that both defines and celebrates this ethnic identity. In fifteen essays, writers intimately involved with their subject explore the vibrant yet marginalized culture of the Creole people across time - their language, literature, religion, art, food, music, folklore, professions, customs, and social barriers."--Jacket

Keller chooses fascinating examples to demonstrate how dominant fictions of a given time emerge and are entrenched, and how historical figures have come to accept or reject these fictions. She begins with 'the grandest fiction', the patriarchal system, and reflects on its origins, effects, and future. Then she addresses the fictions that dominated stories historians told about Reconstruction after the Civil War; the emergence and demise of Mormon polygamy as a fiction in the 19th century; and the life of Eleanor Roosevelt and the fictions that empowered her

This study examines the meteoric rise and subsequent disintegration of a vigorous American literary-political movement in the 1840s. Calling itself "Young America," the group found a mouthpiece in "The Democratic Review", a literary magazine funded by the Democratic Party and edited by the brash and charismatic John O'Sullivan. The Review was not only a major voice in American politics, but also sponsored such writers as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Walt Whitman and greatly influenced Herman Melville, before it and Young America faded from the national consciousness after the Mexican-American War
