"This comprehensive survey of British Romantic poetry explores the work of six poets whose names are most closely associated with the Romantic era--Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Keats, Byron, and Shelley--as well as works by other significant but less widely studied poets such as Leigh Hunt, Charlotte Smith, Felicia Hemans, and Letitia Elizabeth Landon. Along with its exceptional coverage, the volume is alert to relevant contexts, and opens up ways of understanding Romantic poetry"-- Front Matter -- Introduction. This book is a study of children, their books and their reading experiences in late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Britain.  It argues for the importance of reading to early modern childhood and of childhood to early modern reading cultures by drawing together the fields of childhood studies, early modern literature and the history of reading.  Analysing literary representations of children as readers in a range of genres (including ABCs, prayer books, religious narratives, romance, anthologies, school books, drama, translations and autobiography) alongside evidence of the reading experiences of those defined as children in the period, it explores the production of different categories of child readers.  Focusing on the ‘good child’ reader, the youth as consumer, ways of reading as a boy and as a girl, and the retrospective recollection of childhood reading, it sheds new light on the ways in which childhood and reading were understood and experienced in the period 1. Introduction - Reading Child Readers -- 2. 'A good child is one that loves his book': Literary, Religious Instruction and the Child as Reader -- 3. Books for 'childish age': Youthful Reading Cultures in Early Modern England -- 4. Reading Boyhood: The Books and Reading Practices of Early Modern Schoolboys -- 5. 'this girl hath spirit': Rewriting Girlhood Reading -- 6. 'I remember when I began to read': Remembering Childhood Reading

Critical analysis of the dramatisation of homosexuality in British fiction about the Second World War is noticeable only by its relative absence from the field. Whereas feminist literary criticism has broadened the canon of war fiction to include narratives by and about women, queer scholars have seldom focused on literary representations of homosexuality during the war. Natalie Marena Nobitz closes a glaring gap in the critical attention of four novels dealing with the disruption of gender roles and institutionalised heteronormativity: Walter Baxter's Look Down in Mercy (1951), Mary Renault's The Charioteer (1952), Sarah Waters' The Night Watch (2006) and Adam Fitzroy's Make Do and Mend (2012) Frontmatter --Contents --Acknowledgements --List of Abbreviations --Introduction: "Never in the History of Sex was so Much Offered to so Many by so Few" --"People's Pasts [are] so Much More Interesting than Their Futures" - Re-Negotiating the Homosexual Problem Novel --"We Have to Do the Things They Tell Us" - Nation, Masculinity and War --"The Collapse of a Wall [...] Starts with a Few Loose Bricks" - Queering Space, Body and Time --"No Sense of a Tidy Ending": Resisting Closure --Bibliography --Index

This book is a contribution to the new field of literary studies which is informed by book history and takes interest in the intersection of the ideal and material aspects of literature. It studies the ways eighteenth-century English novels, plays and poems illustrated the changes which the growth of literacy, the proliferation of writing and the emergence of print marketplace made in the social and cultural life of Britain and demonstrated the contingency of the emerging criticism on the technological and economic conditions of book production. The first part focusses on the representation of the tensions created by the emergence of literate society and on the hopes and fears awoken by the expansion of the cultural public sphere caused by the proliferation of print. The second part explores the contribution of literature to the shaping of the roles of authors, readers and patrons in the field of literary production 1. Introduction -- 2. From Orality to Script: Literacy, Autonomy and Authority in Clarissa -- 3. Script, Print and the Materiality of Texts -- 4. The Stories of Reading in the Eighteenth-Century Novels -- 5. The Authors' Search for Creative Autonomy -- 6. Midwives of the Muses: Representations of the Transformation of Literary Patronage -- 7. Conclusion.-Index

"Writing to his friend and mentor Charles Cowden Clarke in March of 1817, John Keats asked 'When shall we see each other again? In Heaven or in Hell, or in deep Places? In crooked Lane are we to meet or on Salisbury Plain? Or jumbled together at Drury Lane door?' (Letters 1.126). By way of Macbeth, Keats's joke encompasses a universe of experience-heaven, hell, London's crooked streets, the mythical English countryside, the textual Shakespeare, the performed Shakespeare-all held together conceptually by the notion of the theater. An intrepid playgoer, Keats knew what it was to visit the street carnival of the theater district, to be 'jumbled up' with the crowds making their way down clogged byways to see Edmund Kean's latest impersonation of Shylock or Richard III. There, Keats implies, the metaphysical and the apocalyptic meet the bodily and the everyday on the threshold of the playhouse where his favorite actor reigns. Yet in a sense the letter imagines two Keatses at once: he is an actor parodying Shakespeare's lines even as he is a would-be audience member off to meet a friend. Both aspects give us a glimpse of how vital theatrical experience was to Keats's sense of himself as a social being"--

Ever since the age of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, the Mediterranean has had a significant pull for Britons—including many painters and poets—who sought from it the inspiration, beauty, and fulfillment that evaded them at home. Referred to as “Magick Land” by one traveler, dreams about the Mediterranean, and responses to it, went on to shape the culture of a nation. Written by one of the world’s leading historians of the Mediterranean, this book charts how a new sensibility arose from British engagement with the Mediterranean, ancient and modern. Ranging from Byron’s poetry to Damien Hirst’s installations, Robert Holland shows that while idealized visions and aspirations often met with disillusionment and frustration, the Mediterranean also offered a notably insular society the chance to enrich itself through an imagined world of color, carnival, and sensual self-discovery.

Following the Brexit vote, this book offers a timely historical assessment of the different ways that Britain’s economic future has been imagined and how British ideas have influenced global debates about market relationships over the past two centuries. The 2016 EU referendum hinged to a substantial degree on how competing visions of the UK should engage with foreign markets, which in turn were shaped by competing understandings of Britain’s economic past. The book considers the following inter-related questions: - What roles does economic imagination play in shaping people’s behaviour and how far can insights from behavioural economics be applied to historical issues of market selection? - How useful is the concept of the ‘official mind’ for explaining the development of market relationships? - What has been the relationship between expanding communications and the development of markets? - How and why have certain regions or groupings (e.g. the Commonwealth) been ‘unimagined’- losing their status as promising markets for the future? 1 Introduction; David Thackeray, Andrew Thompson and Richard Toye -- Part 1- Markets of the future -- 2 Imagining the opium trade: Britain’s justification for the first Anglo-Chinese War; Hao Gao -- 3 Business in the borderlands: American trade in the South African marketplace, 1871-1902; Stephen Tuffnell; 4 Imagining New Zealand’s economy in the mid-twentieth century; Glen O’ Hara -- Part 2- Imagining global trade -- 5 Racing round the world: geographical board games and Britain’s global expansion, 1780-1850; Paul Young -- 6 British free trade and the international feminist vision for peace, c.1846-1946; Marc-William Palen -- 7 What was a British buy? Empire, Europe and the politics of patriotic trade in Britain, c.1945-63; David Thackeray and Richard Toye -- 8 How self-service happened: the vision and reality of changing market practices in Britain; Lawrence Black and Thomas Spain -- Part 3- Rethinking decolonisation -- 9 Less than an empire and more than British: foreign investor competition in Ghana and Nigeria in the 1960s; Stephanie Decker -- 10 ‘Information after imperialism’: British overseas representation and Francophone Africa (1957-1967); Andrew Smith -- 11 Constructing colonial capitalism: the public relations campaigns of Hong Kong business groups, 1959-1966; David Clayton -- 12 Un-imagining markets: Chambers of Commerce, globalisation and the political economy of the Commonwealth of Nations, 1945-1975; Andrew Dilley -- 13 Commercial preferences: Economics and Britain’s European choices, 1945-2016; Piers Ludlow

The essays in this book traverse two centuries of queens and their afterlives-historical, mythological, and literary. They speak of the significant and subtle ways that queens leave their mark on the culture they inhabit, focusing on gender, marriage, national identity, diplomacy, and representations of queens in literature. Elizabeth I looms large in this volume, but the interrogation of queenship extends from Elizabeth's historical counterparts, such as Anne Boleyn and Catherine de Medici, to her fictional echoes in the pages of John Lyly, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, Mary Wroth, John Milton, and Margaret Cavendish. Celebrating and building on the renowned scholarship of Carole Levin, Queens Matter in Early Modern Studies exemplifies a range of innovative approaches to examining women and power in the early modern period 1.
