Classical rhetoric has shaped literary theory and practice in Europe. Even during the Enlightenment period, it remained a force in education. Its fundamental significance for bourgeois literature and its theory is now uncontested. In his exploration of the image of the Graces, the criteria of classical rethoric were taken as a starting point, for alongside the questions raised in the content of the work Wieland's creative intentions merit special attention, since these are mainly focussed on creating an impressive speech. As well as looking at the development of the image of the Graces in Wieland, the study uses selected texts to examine the way in which rhetorical theory was taken up into poetic practice, for the influence of rhetoric on the practice and form of his texts cannot be underestimated. If the emphasis of his early work "Theages" (1757) was on the spiritual and moral values embodied in the Graces, in his more mature work the goddesses develop to become representatives of sensualism, before in "Musarion" (1768) and "Die Grazien" (1770) they come to symbolise a balance between sensualism and reason, and stand for the idea of moderation and harmony: Wieland's poem in three books, "Philosophie der Grazien", was born. In the charming and harmonious philosophy of the Graces, Wieland finds a balance between extremes, which is wholly in keeping with the bourgeois ethos. "Musarion" sees the image of the Graces achieve its definitive form.
