Main description: The study investigates imaginary libraries in literary works of the 16th and 17th centuries and their status in the context of the history of ideas. Since the invention of printing there had been a headlong increase in the production of texts, accompanied by a corresponding information overload. These were the preconditions required for certain feats of the imagination to become possible in the first place. In the form of thought-experiments, contemporary literary figures and scholars attempted to outline solutions for the urgent problems involved in imposing order on the unmanageable plethora of texts and assuring the progress of knowledge in the face of the untrammeled abundance of factual information

Main description: The author presents not only a review of the research done into the specialist languages employed within the field of economics but also attempts to provide a theoretical foundation of the subject in the framework of a comprehensive language model. The emphasis is placed on the historical evolution of the academic language employed in the discussion of economics as a science. In theoretical texts from the 16th to the 20th century, the term Geld (money) is discussed both in terms of its conceptual development and the metaphors drawn upon to talk about the concept. It transpires that the Geld concept underwent major changes in the course of its history, whereas there is little change of any moment to be observed in the metaphors pressed into service to talk about money and to constitute Geld as an abstract theoretical concept

With the appearance of the urban, modern, diverse "New Negro" in the Harlem Renaissance, writers and critics began a vibrant debate on the nature of African-American identity, community, and history. Martha Jane Nadell offers an illuminating new perspective on the period and the decades immediately following it in a fascinating exploration of the neglected role played by visual images of race in that debate. After tracing the literary and visual images of nineteenth-century "Old Negro" stereotypes, Nadell focuses on works from the 1920s through the 1940s that showcased important visual elements. Alain Locke and Wallace Thurman published magazines and anthologies that embraced modernist images. Zora Neale Hurston's Mules and Men, with illustrations by Mexican caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias, meditated on the nature of black Southern folk culture. In the "folk history" Twelve Million Black Voices, Richard Wright matched prose to Farm Security Administration photographs. And in the 1948 Langston Hughes poetry collection One Way Ticket, Jacob Lawrence produced a series of drawings engaging with Hughes's themes of lynching, race relations, and black culture. These collaborations addressed questions at the heart of the movement and in the era that followed it: Who exactly were the New Negroes? How could they attack past stereotypes? How should images convey their sense of newness, possibility, and individuality? In what directions should African-American arts and letters move? Featuring many compelling contemporary illustrations, Enter the New Negroes restores a critical visual aspect to African-American culture as it evokes the passion of a community determined to shape its own identity and image

Main description: Conspiracy theories hold an unending fascination. As early as the 17th century, stories were in circulation of the allegedly omnipotent Jesuit Order and its global activities. 18th century journalists observe the numerous secret societies and search for the hidden processes of human machinations. In the Age of Enlightenment, 0unknown high-ups0 are seemingly at work everywhere; 0disguised0 and working with 0invisible venom0 they direct bad fortune or plan the overthrow of the established order. The present study is the first to use broadly-based material to present a comprehensive reconstruction of the literary composition of conspiracy scenarios between 1750 and 1850

Main description: This volume examines a selection of popular books on good language and etiquette in 20th-century Germany. It questions whether the different political systems and ideologies that caused upheaval in Germany from the early 1920s to the mid-60s had a formative influence on conceptions of language and social skills. This unusual approach addresses a hitherto neglected area of research and makes an important contribution towards understanding the function of language in 20th-century Germany

Review text: "The book's true merit lies in the differentiated examination of the early GDR works."Nils Langer in: MLR, 4/2008 "Insgesamt gesehen liefert Laws Untersuchung ein facettenreiches Bild über sprachliche Ideologien, ihre Konstanten und Veränderungen in der jüngeren deutschen (Sprach)Geschichte."Péter Maitz in: Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik 1/2008 "[...] bietet einen guten dokumentarischen Überblick über deutsche Sprachratgeber aus vier Jahrzehnten."Bernd Spiller in: Germanistik 1-2/2007

Under the maxim Ars corrigendi, it was discussed in the Early Modern period how authentic versions of texts could be extracted from ancient literature, as the texts in the manuscripts had been affected by many slips of the pen and other editorial revisions which they had endured on their long journey of tradition during the Middle Ages. The current study reconstructs instructions from the 16th century which demanded the corrector's knowledge of the history of writing and an appropriate method for the laborious work. Ars corrigendi is the fundamental technique with which the science was first a

Main description: Historical studies on Old and Middle High German and the corresponding stages in the development of Low German represent a fairly well-defined field of inquiry. The period between the 16th century and the present, by contrast, confronts historical language research with a considerable dilemma in that the language system can be regarded in many respects as not having undergone major changes so much as a process of extension and differentiation. The papers delivered at the Heidelberg colloquium and published here in book form discuss possible areas of inquiry for historical language research into the evolution of the German language since the early Modern Age, approaches to the problems this field presents and methods of describing the phenomena encountered. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the history of reflection on language, the institutional concern with language and the manifold interpenetration between forms of language usage employed in society in general, in the history of ideas, the history of literature and across the various cultural areas of the German-speaking world
