Best known as a romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge also mounted a strong challenge to the skepticism and relativism we inherit from the Enlightenment. Ronald C. Wendling shows Coleridge, modern in his critical spirit and chronic anxiety, nevertheless progressing toward a total head-and-heart acceptance of Church of England orthodoxy. The tension between Coleridge's poetic feeling for the divinity of the sensible world and his reverential sense of God's personality and transcendence stimulated this development. Adopting a personalist approach to the study of Coleridge's thought, Wendling explains how the circumstances contributing to his addictive personality helped shape his spiritual and intellectual life.

This book explores the way in which literature can be used to reinforce social power. Through rigorous readings of a series of antebellum plantation novels, Susan J. Tracy shows how the narrative strategies employed by proslavery Southern writers served to justify and perpetuate the oppression of women, blacks, and poor whites Tracy focuses on the historical romances of six authors: George Tucker, James Ewell Heath, William Alexander Caruthers, John Pendleton Kennedy, Nathaniel Beverley Tucker, and William Gilmore Simms. Using variations on a recurring plot - in which a young planter/hero rescues a planter's daughter from an "enemy" of her class - each of these novelists reinforced an idealized vision of a Southern civilization based on male superiority, white supremacy, and class inequality. It is a world in which white men are represented as the natural leaders of loyal and dependent women, grateful and docile slaves, and inferior poor whites. According to Tracy, the interweaving of these themes reveals the extent to which the Southern defense of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War was an argument not only about race relations but about gender and class relations as well

Scheming Women charts a trajectory of American female poetic speakers from within a heterosexual lyric framework to bisexual lyric and lesbian subjects outside that pervasive frame. In close readings of Dickinson, Moore, H.D., and Rich, the author makes a new argument about the division that permeates their poetic speaking subjects. Postulating a revolutionary female subject, she extends Julia Kristeva's theory of poetic language through an intertextual approach, and shows that these relatively advantaged female poets destructure the very poetic power they are able to assert. Hogue concludes that in not reproducing positions of dominance and privilege indicative of larger cultural trends, these key poets exemplify important alternatives to class, race, and gender hierarchies - persuasively demonstrating the promise of what she terms an ethical feminist poetic practice.

Born in Bristol in 1779, Fanny Trollope was the daughter of a country parson. She married a barrister in 1809, and produced seven children in eight years, but with her husband in financial trouble she decided to take three of the children to America where living was cheaper. She also hoped to set up her son Henry in business. The bazaar she built was a disaster, and she returned to England on borrowed money, but the book of those years, Domestic Manners of the Americans, was an instant bestseller, and changed her life forever Still plagued by financial problems, the family were forced to flee to Belgium, where Fanny became the sole breadwinner, supporting the family by writing, while nursing her husband and Henry, who were both now dying. She wrote until she was seventy-seven, producing forty-one books in twenty-four years. With their accurate and wickedly satirical look at the modes of contemporary Regency and early Victorian life, her books caused outrage among many, but were widely admired by many of the leading writers of the day, among them Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. This new biography, the result of extensive research in the UK, Europe and Australia, draws on little-known family albums and papers to present a compelling portrayal of a remarkable woman writer. A vivid and engaging life story, it also importantly makes clear the formative influence that Fanny had on her son Anthony's work

These essays examine Victorian painting in the light of this 'woman question' by analysing the change in representation of the family, romance, social issues such as emigration and colonialism, the use of the female nude and the traditions of portraiture, history-painting and still life. The art and artists are considered in a socio-political context, and the connections between Victorian sexism, racism and the class system are examined. These essays bring to light much previously unknown work (especially by women) and reappraise many well-known paintings.
