    Obwohl von dem einleitenden. ersten Buch des K. A. schon eine von dem indischen Herausgeber des Textes herrührende grundlegende englische Übersetzung, und von M. Vallauri eine auch mit wertvollen Anmerkungen ausgestattete italienische Wiedergabe vorliegt, auch eine Reihe besonders wichtiger Stellen und Abschnitte daraus schon eine deutsche Bearbeitung erfahren hat durch Gelehrte wie Hillebrandt, Jacobi , Hertel, Zachariae, Charpentier, Lüders, Hultzsch u. a., so hoffe ich doch , dass der nachstehende Versuch einer deutschen Übersetzung des ganzen ersten Buchs nicht unwillkommen sein wird. Der zu Grunde gelegte Text ist der gedruckte von Shama Sastri, nur sind an den in meinen Textkritischen Bemerkungen zum K. A. (ZDMG. 70-72) mit einem Stern (*) bezeichneten Textstellen in der Regel die besseren Lesarten der Hs. B und der Zitate bevorzugt.

Arthaśāstra von Gaṇapati in TSS. hat die Forschungen über dieses Werk ganz besonders gefördert, ich habe darauf schon in der Jacobi Festgabe hingewiesen und will hier nur einen einzelnen noch unerledigten Punkt herausgreifen, die Schreibung des Namens als Kauṭalya und Kauṭalīya mit a in der Mitte (akāramadhya), die der Verfasser auf Grund seiner HSS. (ebenso die Münchener Hs. Nr. 335) in seiner neuen Ausgabe überall durchgeführt hat. Die Formen Kauṭilya und Kauṭilīya der früheren Ausgaben mit i in der Mitte (ikāramadhya) bezeichnet er als einen Irrtum. Der Schreiber und Leser und führt Kauṭalya auf den Namen eines Ṛṣi Kuṭala zurück, der das Kuṭala-Gotra gründete, dessen Abkömmlinge sich Kauṭalya nannten.
