Diese eröffnet innovative Blickpunkte für das Verständnis der Werke der drei Dichter in einem europäischen Kontext. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg und in den ersten Nachkriegsjahren wird die europäische Literatur - durch die Werke von Erich Fried, Salvatore Quasimodo und Dylan Thomas durch kongruente Themen und literarische Formen geprägt. Erich Fried (1921-1988) musste 1938, also im Alter von 17 Jahren, wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft seine österreichische Heimat verlassen und nach England flüchten. Dort begann seine literarische Karriere damit, dass er in Londoner Exilzeitschriften engagierte Gedichte gegen den Nationalsozialismus und den Krieg publizierte. In den Kriegsjahren schrieb auch der italienische Autor Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968) für den Widerstand gegen den Krieg. Nach einer Phase hermetischer, introvertierter, schwerverständlicher Lyrik schriebt er in den Sammlungen "Nuove poesie" und "Giorno dopo giorno", über den Krieg in Italien in einer neuen Art, die kaum Anklänge an seine frühere hermetische Dichtung aufweist. In England schrieb zu dieser Zeit Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) brillante und provozierende Antikriegsgedichte und beeindruckte damit die literarische Szene. Dylan Thomas hatte mit 17 seine kleine Heimatstadt Swansea in Wales verlassen, um sein Glück in London zu finden. Sein Traum war, ein so berühmter Schriftsteller wie Erich Fried zu werden. Die genannten Autoren sind nicht nur unter literarischem Aspekt mit einander verbunden, sondern auch in ihren Biographien. There, his literary career began when he published poems in London magazines against Nazism and the war in exile.
During the war years, the Italian writer Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968) also wrote for resisting about resistance to the war. After a period of hermetic, introverted poetry which was difficult to understand, he wrote the collections " Nuove poesie " and " Giorno dopo giorno " about the war in Italy in a new way that was hardly reminiscent of his earlier hermetic style of writing. In England, at this time, Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) wrote brilliant and provocative anti-war poems and so impressed the literary scene. In London, Dylan Thomas made the acquaintance of Erich Fried in 1946, when both writers worked at the BBC. After Thomas' death, Fried translated his radio broadcasts from English into German. Salvatore Quasimodo also met Dylan Thomas some years after Fried (1953).
