The volume is held together by the method of persistent questioning, in the tradition of the western c

Introduction / Mark C. Amodio and Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe -- Falling into place : dislocation in the Junius Book / Nicholas Howe -- Aelfric revises : the lives of Martin and the idea of the author / Paul E. The Anglo-Saxons placed a great deal of importance on wisdom and learning, something Beowulf makes dramatically clear when he uses his 'wordhord' to command respect and admiration from his friends and foes alike. Modern day scholars no longer have recourse to the living language and culture of the Anglo-Saxons, and as a result must turn to their 'wordhords' - the literary, historical, and cultural artefacts that have survived in various degrees of intactness - to learn about life in Anglo-Saxon England. This collection of essays, gathered to honour the memory of the noted Anglo-Saxonist Edward B. Irving, Jr., brings together an international group of leading scholars who take the measure of Anglo-Saxon literary, textual, and lexical studies in the present moment. Ranging from philological and structural studies to ones that explicitly engage a variety of contemporary theoretical issues, they reflect the rich diversity of approaches to be found among Anglo-Saxonists. Subjects addressed include comparative work on Old English and Latin, and on Old English, ancient Greek, and South Slavic, notions of authorship and textual integrity, techniques of editing, heroic poetry, religious verse, lexicography, oral tradition, and material textuality. Offering a fresh reading of some popular pieces and inviting attention to some less-familiar texts, these previously unpublished essays illustrate the latest state of particular techniques for literary / critical analysis, textual recovery, and lexical studies

This collection of essays is a tribute to Rachel Elior´s decades of teaching, scholarship and mentoring. If a Festschrift reflects the individuality of the honoree, then this volume offers insights into the scope of Rachel Elios interests and scholarly achievements in the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish apocalypticism, magic, and mysticism from the Second Temple period to the later rabbinic and Hekhalot developments. The majority of articles included in the volume deal with Jewish and Christian apocalyptic and mystical texts constituting the core of experiential dimension of these religious traditions.

In a career spanning over fifty years, the questions that Jacob Neusner has asked and the critical methodologies he has developed have shaped the way scholars have come to approach the rabbinic literature as well as the diverse manifestations of Judaism from rabbinic times until the present. The essays collected here honor that legacy illustrating an influence that is so pervasive that scholars today who engage in the critical study of Judaism and the history of religions more generally work in a laboratory that Professor Neusner created. Addressing topics in ancient and Rabbinic Judaism, the Judaic context of early Christianity, American Judaism, World religions, and the academic study of the humanities, these essays demarcate the current state of Judiac and religious studies in the academy today

This book is a celebration. It praises the many innovative aspects of Irina Sandomirskaja"s contributions to a variety of fields in the humanities and Slavic studies, in particular through the numerous colleagues who mirror the impact of her work in their own research and thought. As such, this celebration is also an expression of academic gratitude and a gesture of friendship

"A tribute to Henry W. Sullivan in celebration of his 80th birthday, this volume encompasses a wide spectrum of Hispanic literary scholarship to honor a prolific scholar whose contributions have been extensive, not only as a Golden Age Hispanist but also as a devoted Lacanian scholar, literary critic, translator, poet, novelist, playwright, and composer. The title of the collection comes directly from Sullivan's recent study on tragic drama in the Golden Age of Spain. Even though the "ghost" he attempts to lay there is the critical controversy around defining and classifying tragedy among Spanish classic comedias, the label extends and applies to Sullivan's lifelong commitment to the relevance of Spanish drama of the Golden Age within the universal canon, especially from an English-language perspective. Moreover, his arguments are easily applicable in defense of the Humanities and the significance of Literature amid the unwelcome structural changes in Academia"--
