"This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of litterature engagee, such as Paul Nizan and Louis Aragon. It analyses the work of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Tery, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of twentieth-century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the criteria against which women's writing has been evaluated by feminist scholarship."--BOOK JACKET

In Mapping Our Selves Helen Buss considers a broad range of autobiographical works written by Canadian women, including memoirs, journals, and conventional autobiography as well as experiments in blending a number of writing genres. She constructs her own "mapping" theory of how female identity is formed in order to illustrate how identity can be understood through the relationship between writer, text, and reader. Buss supplies a framework for her study by reviewing male-centred theories of identity and some of the ways in which theorists working with women's autobiographical accounts are changing these models. The texts selected by Buss include those by Elizabeth Simcoe, Susanna Moodie, Anna Jameson, Nellie McClung, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Emily Carr, Laura Salverson, Margaret Laurence, Dorothy Livesay, Daphne Marlatt, Mary Meigs, Maria Campbell, Kristjana Gunnars, and Aritha van Herk. Each section of the book opens with a short autobiographical introduction by Buss, allowing the reader to place the author's critical practice within the context of her sense of her own identity as critic, writer, and woman.-- publisher pt. 1. "Women, Property, and the Letters of Law in Early Modern England examines the competing narratives of property told by and about women in the early modern period. Through letters, legal treatises, case law, wills, and works of literature, the contributors explore women's complex roles as subjects and agents in commercial and domestic economies, and as objects shaped by a network of social and legal relationships. By constructing conversations across the disciplinary boundaries of legal and social history, sociology, and literary criticism, the collection explores a diverse range of women's property relationships." "Recent research has revealed fissures in our knowledge about women's property relationships within a regime characterized by competing jurisdictions, diverse systems of nature, and multiple concepts of property. Women, Property, and the Letters of the Law in Early Modern England turns to these points of departure for the study of women's legal status and property relationships in the early modern period. This interdisciplinary analysis of women and property is written in an accessible manner and will become a valuable resource for scholars and students of Renaissance, Restoration, and eighteenth-century literature, early modern social and legal history, and women's studies."--Jacket

Women in Victorian England wore jewelry made from each other's hair and wrote poems celebrating decades of friendship. They pored over magazines that described the dangerous pleasures of corporal punishment. A few had sexual relationships with each other, exchanged rings and vows, willed each other property, and lived together in long-term partnerships described as marriages. But, as Sharon Marcus shows, these women were not seen as gender outlaws. Their desires were fanned by consumer culture and their friendships and unions were accepted and even encouraged by family, society, and church. Far from being sexless angels defined only by male desires, Victorian women openly enjoyed looking at and even dominating other women. Their friendships helped realize the ideal of companionate love between men and women celebrated by novels, and their unions influenced politicians and social thinkers to reform marriage law.--From publisher description

The volume gathers eleven contributions on the origins, evolution and function of female models in Western culture, from Greco-Roman texts to medieval and Renaissance literature. Organized in four thematic blocks, the book intends to elucidate how misogynistic discourse and its opposite are constructed in literary and didactical works dealing with feminine archetypes.

Making Women's Histories showcases the transformations that the intellectual and political production of women's history has engendered across time and space. It considers the difference women's and gender history has made to and within national fields of study, and to what extent the wider historiography has integrated this new knowledge. What are the accomplishments of women's and gender history? What are its shortcomings? What is its future? The contributors discuss their discovery of women's histories, the multiple turns the field has taken, and how place affected the course of this scholarship.

"Nineteenth-century New Brunswick society was dominated by white, Protestant, Anglophone men. Yet, during this time of state formation in Canada, women increasingly helped to define and shape a provincial outlook. I wish to keep a record is the first book to focus exclusively on the life-course experiences of nineteenth-century New Brunswick women. Gail G. Campbell offers an interpretive scholarly analysis of 28 women's diaries while enticing readers to listen to the voices of the diarists. Their diaries show women constructing themselves as individuals, assuming their essential place in building families and communities, and shaping their society by directing its outward gaze and envisioning its future. Campbell's lively analysis calls on scholars to distinguish between immigrant and native-born women and to move beyond present-day conceptions of such women's world. This unique study provides a framework for developing an understanding of women's worlds in nineteenth-century North America."-- The diarists -- Reading nineteenth-century diaries : a historian's perspective -- The life course in demographic context : women's experience -- Three generations : women of their time and place -- From innocent flirtation to formal courtship -- The world of the family -- Households of independent women -- Sociability and social networks -- Schooling and scholars -- A sustaining faith -- Work in the home -- Beyond the bounds of family : paid work -- Politics and social reform -- A cosmopolitan outlook -- In the midst of life

Depictions of motherhood are ever present in Western art, yet rarely questioned or challenged. We may shy away from a subject that could be seen as sentimental or overly associated with idealistic constructs of femininity, nurture and care. Whether we are mothers ourselves, or whether we bring or nurture life in a wider sense, we all have some understanding of motherhood. We are all born of a woman?s body. We are formed from the messy, challenging, self-denying and transformative experiences of motherhood. Giving birth to their creations, artists have represented this vital and complex subject in a variety of ways, providing insight into what motherhood might mean, its joys and challenges, and seeking to articulate its unspoken aspects. This beautiful gift book delves into the subject of motherhood as seen through the eyes of artists, providing a fresh insight into maternity as an art-historical subject and revealing the ways in which it has been confronted and re-imagined over the past 400 years. Featuring fifty artworks in a variety of media, this book is a celebration of motherhood in all its complexity
