    Debates about the possibility of an open culture – or indeed about the possibility of an open debate about the openness of culture – often turn on questions of standards. But since no benchmark can be absolute, judgement is a proliferation of comparisons. Through a series of case studies in everyday and academic comparison (literature, history, politics, philosophy), Haun Saussy calls out the typical vices of comparison and proposes ways to unseat them. For however much it is abused, distorted, and manipulated, comparison retains an essential link to the idea of justice.

Dies nicht als Verlust, sondern als den Beginn von etwas Neuem zu erleben, scheint die Herausforderung der Zukunft zu sein.Die Beiträger_innen, darunter Kien Nghi Ha, Ram A. Mall und Bea Lundt, stellen Analysen, Deutungen und Perspektiven vor, wie erste Schritte in eine solche Zukunft aussehen könnten. Dem Band ist ein Streitgespräch mit Jörn Rüsen beigefügt, der den hier vertretenen Ansätzen kritisch begegnet Today's world is organized into nation-states. Postcolonial paradigms, nationalism, ethnocentrism and racism all form part of a nation that brings history, culture and identity into a broader context of meaning. This volume shows that the increasing cultural pluralization of societies necessitates an openness to encounters that ultimately change all involved. To experience this not as a loss, but rather as the beginning of something new, presents itself as the challenge of the future.
