Literature is rife with uncertainty. Literature is good for us. These two ideas about reading literature are often taken for granted. But what is the relationship between literature's capacity to unsettle, perplex, and bewilder us, and literature's ethical value?

    Notes:

Book 3 of Cicero's de finibus is generally regarded as an accurate description of Stoic ethics. This study shows that Cicero did not present Stoic orthodoxy but combined it with contemporary peripatetic theory. This has implications for our understanding of Stoa and Peripatos and offers new insights into Cicero's methods and the philosophical discourse of the 1st century BC.

This is an ethical history of democracy in the first half of the 20th century. In this era, Gandhi argues, the concept of ethics had obtained a ubiquitous application. No longer the denominator for right and wrong or good and bad behaviour, merely, it came to designate all projects of disciplined self-fashioning. These could tend either toward exclusivity and hierarchy or toward a more inclusive universalism, depending on the players. Gandhi discloses a shared ethos of perfectionist values across imperialism, fascism, and new liberalism.

James Carter argues that Ricoeur's later writings in particular offer a vision of ethical life that can be understood as a moral religion.

In these highly inventive essays, Joan Retallack, acclaimed poet and essayist, conveys her unique post-utopian vision as she explores the relationship between art and life in today's chaotic world. In the tradition of the essay as complex humanist exploration, she engages ideas from across history: Aristotle's definition of happiness, Epicurus's swerve into unpredictable possibility, Montaigne's essays as an instrument of self-invention, John Cage's redefinition of Silence. Within her unifying rubric of poethics, Retallack gives the reader plenty of surprises with a wonderful range of examples...

Nietzsche had a particular interest in the relationship between art and life, and in art's contribution to his philosophical aims - to identify the conditions of the affirmation of life, cultural renewal, and exemplary human living. "The year 2007 marked the bicentenary of the Act abolishing British participation in the slave trade. "Representing Enslavement and Abolition on Museums"--Which uniquely draws together contributions from academic commentators, museum professionals, community activists and artists who had an involvement with the bicentenary - reflects on the complexity and difficulty of museums' experiences in presenting and interpreting the histories of slavery and abolition, and places these experiences in the broader context of debates over the bicentenary's significance and the lessons to be learnt from it. The history of Britain's role in transatlantic slavery officially become part of the National Curriculum in the UK in 2009; with the bicentenary of 2007, this marks the start of increasing public engagement with what has largely been a "hidden" history. The book aims to not only critically review and assess the impact of the bicentenary, but also to identify practical issues that public historians, consultants, museum practitioners, heritage professionals and policy makers can draw upon in developing responses, both to the increasing recognition of Britain's history of African enslavement and controversial and traumatic histories more generally"--
