Main description: The study sets out from an inquiry into why in the late 19th and early 20th century literature turned more and more to the subject of death although this phenomenon was increasingly repressed and negated in public awareness. The bias of this inquiry is slanted towards the aesthetic procedures enabling literature to embark on this new engagement with the experience of finiteness and mortality. Interpretations of selected texts in German demonstrate the extent to which narrative structures are suffused, affected and changed by new structures of awareness

Main description: The book examines the literary genre of the cyclical framework story, which can be found in literature of the Orient (Arabian Nights) and to a great extent in German Romantic literature (e.g. Goethe, Brentano, Hauff), in serialized novels, as well as in movie sequels, and radio and television series. In individual analyses of literary texts and television series, the astonishing continuity of the motif of social narrative against death is evidenced

In Einzelanalysen literarischer Texte und TV-Serien wird die erstaunliche Kontinuität des Motivs des geselligen Erzählens gegen den Tod nachgewiesen

Drawing on narratological and feminist theory, Susan Sniader Lanser explores patterns of narration in a wide range of novels by women of England, France, and the United States from the 1740s to the present. She sheds light on the history of "voice" as a narrative strategy and as a means of attaining social power. She considers the dynamics in personal voice in authors such as Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jamaica Kincaid. In writers who attempt a "communal voice"—including Mary Wollstonecraft, Elizabeth Gaskell, Joan Chase, and Monique Wittig—she finds innovative strategies that challenge the conventions of Western narrative

In response to the classic question whether Don Quixote is true to life, Felix Martinez-Bonati defines it as an unrealistic allegory of realism. He maintains that Cervantes's novel presents an ironized universe of literature that plays with the contradictions of traditional wisdom and the variety and limitations of literary forms-including those of verisimilitude. Drawing on Aristotle's Poetics, on the idealist and romantic traditions that originate in Kant, Schiller, Schelling, Hegel, and Coleridge, and on contemporary critical theory, Martinez-Bonati describes the stylistic matrix of Don Quixote as a combination of semirealism, romance fantasy, and comedy. He provides fresh insights into the character of Cervantes's imagination, the composition and unity of Don Quixote, and its generic structure, rhetorical force, and metafictional intentionality

A study in poetic interaction, The Odyssey in Athens explores the ways in which narrative structure and parallels within and between epic poems create or disclose meaning. Erwin F. Cook also broadens the scope of this intertextual approach to include the relationship of Homeric epic to ritual. Specifically he argues that the Odyssey achieved its form as a written text within the context of Athenian civic cults during the reign of Peisistratos. Focusing on the prologue and the Apologoi (Books 9–12), Cook shows how the traditional Greek polarity between force and intelligence informs the Odyssean narrative at all levels of composition. He then uses this polarity to explain instances of Odyssean self-reference, allusions to other epic traditions—in particular the Iliad—and interaction between the poem and its performance context in Athenian civic ritual. This detailed structural analysis, with its insights into the circumstances and meaning of the Odyssey's composition, will lead to a new understanding of the Homeric epics and the tradition they evoked
