    Christina Harker untersucht in dieser Studie die vorherrschende Meinung, dass das Neue Testament anti-imperial sei, indem sie die Forschung zum Neuen Testament sowie die Erfahrungen der Galater innerhalb imperialer Diskurse, die die Auflösung der konventionellen Kolonialreiche im 20. Jahrhundert überdauerten, verortet. Dadurch, dass sie die grob vereinfachende Behandlung des Kaiserreichs in der Bibelforschung als post-imperial, also unwissentlich die Muster imperialer Ideologie wiederholend, problematisiert, schlägt sie eine neue Deutung des Briefes an die Galater vor. Christina Harker überarbeitet und differenziert die Darstellung der Galater selbst, statt der des Paulus, innerhalb dessen, was sich als eine sozial facettenreiche Welt erweist, die von komplexen Individuen mit heterogenen sozialen und kulturellen Identitäten bevölkert wird. Ihre Folgerungen zeigen, dass Neutestamentler, die die Bibel und Paulus als anti-imperial rehabilitieren, dieselben, imperialen Methoden der Deutung fortschreiben, die sie eigentlich ablehnen. In this work, Christina Harker deconstructs the prevailing treatment of the New Testament as anti-imperial by contextualizing both New Testament scholarship and the Galatian experience within imperialist discourses that survived the dissolution of conventional empires in the twentieth century. She critiques simplistic treatments of empire as post-imperial (that is, replicating patterns of imperialist ideology, albeit unwittingly). To solve the problem, a new interpretation of Galatians is proposed that reworks and complicates the portrait of the Galatians themselves, rather than Paul, within what then emerges as a diverse social world peopled by complex individuals with heterogeneous social and cultural identities. The author is thus able to show how New Testament scholars who rehabilitate the Bible and Paul as anti-empire perpetuate the same imperialist modes of interpretation they seek to repudiate.

    Das Matthäusevangelium ist ein oeuvre mouvante (ein Werk in Arbeit) und die Dynamik dieses Prozesses ist wesentlich für die Identität und Funktion des Werks. Dieses Verständnis des Matthäusevangeliums steht im Gegensatz zur Forschungsgeschichte, welche den Autor Matthäus und seine Gestaltung des Evangeliums in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Edwin K. Broadhead konzentriert sich mit seinem Forschungsansatz stattdessen auf die Traditionsgeschichte – die historische Entwicklung des Aufbaus und der Überlieferung – und bleibt offen für die dialektische Beschäftigung damit und die widersprüchlichen Stimmen, die wesentlich für das Matthäusevangelium sind. Das Ergebnis ist, dass die durchweg jüdischen Strukturen dieses Evangeliums hervorgehoben werden, es eine breiter gefächerte Beschäftigung mit der Landschaft der Antike gibt und die weitere Entwicklung der Überlieferungsgeschichte mehr Beachtung findet. Dieses Augenmerk auf die sich entwickelnde Tradition hebt die Entwicklungsfähigkeit und das Potential dieser Diskurse eher hervor, als sie zu unterdrücken. The Gospel of Matthew is an oeuvre mouvante (a work in process), and the dynamics of this process are essential to its identity and function. This understanding of the Gospel of Matthew stands in distinction from the long history of research centered on Matthew the author and his design for the gospel. Focused instead on tradition history—the history of composition and transmission—Edwin K. Broadhead's approach keeps open the dialectical engagements and the conflicting voices intrinsic to the Gospel of Matthew. As a result, the consistently Jewish textures of this gospel are emphasized, there is a broader engagement with the landscape of antiquity, and serious attention is given to further developments in the history of transmission. This focus on the developing tradition thus highlights, rather than suppresses, the viability and the generative potential of such discourses.

Weil die Diasporajuden nicht regelmäßig am religiösen Leben im Jerusalemer Tempel teilnehmen konnten, behauptet der Autor, dass sie andere Muster für die Ausübung der jüdischen Religiosität entwickelten. Er sieht Josephus als einen Juden, der seine Karriere als judäischer Priester begann, aber dann nach Rom zog und langsam zu einem Intellektuellen der Diaspora wurde. Josephus' erstes Werk, Geschichte des judäischen Krieges, zeigt das Judentum aus der Perspektive eines judäischen Priester, mit dem Tempel und dem Kult im Zentrum. Nachdem beide verloren gegangen sind, schwand die religiöse Hoffnung. Tuval analysiert auch Jüdische Altertümer, welches fünfzehn Jahre später geschrieben wurde. Das religiöse Bild hatte sich drastisch verändert: Der Tempel wurde durch das Gesetz an den Rand gedrängt oder ersetzt. In this study, Michael Tuval examines the religion of Flavius Josephus diachronically. The author suggests that because Diaspora Jews could not participate regularly in the cultic life of the Jerusalem Temple, they developed other paradigms of Judaic religiosity. He interprets Josephus as a Jew who began his career as a Judean priest but moved to Rome and gradually became a Diaspora intellectual. Josephus' first work, Judean War, reflects a Judean priestly view of Judaism, with the Temple and cult at the center. After these disappeared, there was not much hope left in the religious realm. Tuval also analyzes Antiquities of the Jews, which was written fifteen years later. Here the religious picture has been transformed drastically. The Temple has been marginalized or replaced by the law which is universal and perfect for all humanity. The book is optimistic about the future of Judaism, and does not hint that the absence of the Temple hinders human-divine communication. Paradoxically, in later years Josephus continued to emphasize his priestly identity. The explanation offered for this anomaly is a complex one. The author also argues that Josephus continued to see the priests as the natural leaders of post-destruction Judaism.

    Philo von Alexandrien nimmt eine Schlüsselstellung in der hellenistischen Geistesgeschichte ein, weil er der erste mittelplatonische Denker gewesen ist, dessen Schriften zum größten Teil überliefert sind. Seine Schriften sind darüber hinaus eine unentbehrliche Quelle für die hellenistische und stoische Philosophie, deren Werke nicht erhalten sind. Seine theologiegeschichtliche Bedeutung beruht darauf, dass er sich als Erster bei seinen Auslegungen der Fünft Bücher Mose zur Welt- und Existenzerhellung der ihm vorliegenden Schriften der griechischen Philosophen und der zu seiner Zeit geltenden Ansichten der empirischen Wissenschaften bedient hat. Da es in deutscher Sprache keine dem derzeitigen Forschungsstand entsprechende Einführung in sein Leben und Denken gibt, hat Kaiser eine solche erarbeitet. Sie unterscheidet sich von ihren Vorgängern dadurch, dass sie sich nicht auf die Vorstellung seiner exegetischen Methode und ihrer Ergebnisse beschränkt, sondern nach einer knappen Einführung in sein Leben und seine Schriften seine geographische, soziale und biologische Lebenswelt unter Rückgriff auf in dieser Beziehung relevante antike Texte behandelt. Anschließend wird seine den heutigen Leser befremdende, aber damals in der stoischen Homerexegese übliche allegorische Methode an ausgewählten Beispielen vorgestellt. Im Rückblick zeigt es sich, dass Philo ein ebenso menschlicher wie frommer Denker gewesen ist, dessen Glaube an den Gott, der die Welt geschaffen hat und lenkt und der zugleich der Gott ist, der Israel erwählt hat und der Gott jedes einzelnen Menschen ist, das Mithin besitzen die von Philo behandelten Probleme des Glaubens an Gott, des Gehorsams gegen seine Gebote und des richtigen Lebens mutatis mutandis auch heute noch ihre Relevanz.
