Stell dir vor, die Matratzen haben gar keine Sprungfedern …» So beginnt der erste Brief des neunjährigen Roald an seine Mutter Sofie Magdalene, geschrieben unter dem wachsamen Blick des gestrengen Schuldirektors. Vierzig Jahre lang wird Roald Dahl wöchentlich einen Brief an seine Mutter senden: ein Bericht seiner Erlebnisse auf Boarding School und College, seiner Abenteuer im Ausland und zu Kriegszeiten, der Höhe- und Tiefpunkte seines Lebens von der Jugend in Wales bis hin zum diplomatischen Dienst in Washington, wo Dahl Politiker wie Filmstars trifft und die Geschicke des Landes mitbestimmt. Er ahnt nicht, dass seine Mutter jeden einzelnen der sechshundert Briefe hüten wird wie einen Schatz. Sofie Magdalene war Roald Dahls erste Leserin und Kritikerin. Sie ermutigte ihn dazu, Geschichten zu erzählen und aufzuschreiben.     ger: Wortspiele zählen zu den Übersetzungsproblemen, da sie meist nicht mit standardmäßigen Verfahren übersetzt werden können. Sie bedeuten daher für ÜbersetzerInnen eine Herausforderung, bei der ein kreativer Aufwand erforderlich ist. Das Kinderbuch "The BFG" von Roald Dahl enthält eine große Anzahl an Wortspielen und dient dieser Diplomarbeit daher als Untersuchungsgegenstand. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, zu beleuchten, welche kreativen Verfahren bei der Übersetzung von Wortspielen Anwendung finden können bzw. ob und warum Wortspiele verlorengehen. Es wird dabei davon ausgegangen, dass dies in manchen Fällen unvermeidlich ist, aber durchaus kompensiert werden kann. Schließlich wird auch der übersetzte Text auf Wortspiele hin untersucht, um mögliche Kompensationen festzustellen. Zudem soll diese Analyse aufzeigen, wie sich Kreativität im Kontext der Wortspielübersetzung messen lässt, und dass es unterschiedliche Abstufungen von Kreativität gibt. Dafür werden die Wortspiele des Ausgangs- und Zieltextes erfasst, kategorisiert und Dirk Delabastitas Übersetzungsverfahren zugeordnet. Diese werden wiederum in zwei negative und zwei positive Kreativitätsstufen eingeteilt, abhängig davon, ob Wortspiele weggelassen, erhalten bzw. ähnlich übersetzt oder hinzugefügt werden. Bei der Auswertung der einzelnen Textfragmente lässt sich erkennen, dass der Übersetzer insgesamt versuchte, ähnliche Wortspielstrategien wie der Autor anzuwenden, wobei nicht alle gleich kreativ sind. Zudem erfüllen manche der übersetzten Wortspiele nicht den erforderlichen Aspekt der Angemessenheit und fallen damit in eine negative Kreativitätsstufe. Von den Wortspielen im Ausgangstext fällt zwar ein beachtlicher Teil weg, in der deutschen Übersetzung sind zur Kompensation aber umso mehr zusätzlich eingebaute Wortspiele zu finden. Die kreative Bilanz fällt somit positiv aus. eng: Wordplay is defined as a translation problem as it usually cannot be translated by use of ordinary translation techniques. Therefore, it is a challenge for translators and requires a high amount of creativity. The children’s book "The BFG" by Roald Dahl contains a high amount of wordplay and thus lends itself well as an object of investigation for this diploma thesis. The aim of this thesis is to examine which creative techniques are used for translating wordplay and if and why wordplay is omitted. It is assumed that in some cases such a loss is inevitable but can be compensated. Accordingly, the German translation was screened for examples of wordplay that represent a possible compensation. This analysis also serves to show how creativity can be measured in the context of wordplay translation and that there are different levels of creativity. To that end, text segments containing wordplay in the source as well as in the target text are gathered, categorized and allocated to Dirk Delabastita’s wordplay translation procedures. Those translation procedures are again allocated to two negative and two positive levels of creativity, depending on whether wordplay was translated as such, omitted or added. The analysis of the text fragments in question shows that in general the translator tried to use similar wordplay techniques as the source text author, although not all wordplay translations are equally creative. Furthermore, not all of the examined wordplay translations meet the required appropriateness and are therefore allocated to one of the negative creativity levels. Overall, a considerable part of the original wordplay is omitted in the German translation. However, in order to compensate that, the translator added more plays on words in other passages in the book than were omitted. Thus, the overall creativity balance is positive.
