The cultural phenomenon known as "decadence" has often been viewed as an ephemeral artistic vogue that fluorished briefly in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe. This study makes the case for decadence as a literary movement in its own right, based on a set of aesthetic principles that formed a transitional link between romanticism and modernism. Understood in this developmental context, decadence represents the aesthetic substratum of a wide range of fin-de-siecle literary schools, including naturalism, realism, Parnassianism, aestheticism, and symbolism. As an impulse toward modernism, it prefigures the thematic, structural, and stylistic concerns of later literature. David Weir demonstrates his thesis by analyzing a number of French, English, Italian, and American novels, each associated with some specific decadent literary tendency. The book concludes by arguing that the decadent sensibility persists in popular culture and contemporary theory, with multiculturalism and postmodernism representing its most current manifestations

An objective, rational and retrospective history tends to interpret the wealth of the concept of decadence as a creation of imagination, fed religion and pseudo-scientific discourses and superstitions, as, in fact, a myth. The decay is thus our view the result of an amalgam, a superposition of heterogeneous elements that were perceived in a subjective relationship underground. Huysmans, Lorrain, Rachilde, Laforgue are decadent writers? We would like to change the terms of the question and ask this: these writers are there any writers of the decadence? Indeed, we believe that artists of that time were not the products of these dubious theories but they are otherwise suitable breeding ground of the legendary decadence enriched scientism then. We would show how well this decadent literature, it should call decadentist, to be felt in the deliberately decadent and not morbidly, has appropriated a set of archetypes and stereotypes constituting collective imagery decadence. We would thus show how decadent literature has exploited all aspects of the myth, both in the structures of discourse in that it develops the imagination, how these writers have managed to aestheticized a historical concept and turn it into a literature meta -decadent, whose cornerstone is in the mind of a hoaxer time enjoying the joke, irony, the second degree, how, ultimately, the so-called decadent literature based on a comedy of death

« Anywhere but out of this world » écrivit Baudelaire. Quand l'esthétique se fait éthique, la Décadence n'est jamais bien loin The fin de siècle souls feel nostalgic for a more artistic world, try through their art to give consistency to their rejection of a society which is as a yoke. The character a veritable herald of social and moral tear, institutes a new link to reality by improving a kind of mental erethism. It is therefore a matter of improving the state of decadence through a provocative discourse. Baudelaire wrote « Anywhere but out of this world » This credo will be repeated over and over in the works of this followers who intend to undo reality in order to remake it. Rachilde's and Jean Lorrain's works, real pleas against the norm, link together upon two main lines which will determine their thematic and scriptural choices : perversion and subversion. Using major novels of both authors, this thesis intends firstly to analyse the semiology of a out of nature universe which thwarts the plans of reality transcription by the liberation of the heroes' and heroines' phantasmagoria and neurosis. Secondly, this thesis will bring out Eros' perversions which can be the expression of the desire transformation as a wish to « remake love ». This rewriting of codes, sexual in particular, leads up a trouble about gender and moreover, about the ego. Finally, we will examine the fevers of identity which lead to the endless fluctuations of speech between sense and nonsense, which will be shown to be symptomatic of an iconoclastic position. When the aesthetics become ethical, decadence is never very far
