In History 4° Celsius Ian Baucom continues his inquiries into the place of the Black Atlantic in the making of the modern and postmodern world. Putting black studies into conversation with climate change, Baucom outlines how the ongoing concerns of critical race, diaspora, and postcolonial studies are crucial to understanding the Anthropocene. He draws on materialist and post-materialist thought, Sartre, and the science of climate change to trace the ways in which evolving political, cultural, and natural history converge to shape a globally destructive force. Identifying the quest for limitless financial gain as the primary driving force behind both the slave trade and the continuing increase in global greenhouse gas emissions, Baucom demonstrates that climate change and the conditions of the Black Atlantic, colonialism, and the postcolony are fundamentally entwined. In so doing, he argues for the necessity of establishing a method of critical exchange between climate science, black studies, and the surrounding theoretical inquiries of humanism and posthumanism

Green growth, zero emissions, sustainability - the climate change debate has created its own vocabulary, the concepts of which can sometimes be strategically coupled to one another in order to increase their plausibility. »Climate neutrality« and »climate compatible development« appear to be admirable goals, but can they also be realized in a socially neutral way? Why are there »climate refugees« only in developing countries, when climate change is actually a global problem? In the »Climate Debate Dictionary«, experts in the discourse on climate change from the social and political sciences and cultural studies put over 40 key concepts up for discussion, thereby providing an introduction to the critical reflection of the objectives and the problems of contemporary climate policy. Where are its limits?

Through speculative fiction, five interlocking novelettes explore the possible realities of our climate future. What is the future of our climate? Given that our summers now regularly feature arctic heat waves and wildfire blood skies, polar vortex winters that reach all the way down to Texas, and “100-year” storms that hit every few months, it may seem that catastrophe is a done deal. As grim as things are, however, we still have options. Combining fiction and nonfiction and employing speculative tools for scholarly purposes, Our Shared Storm explores not just one potential climate future but five possible outcomes dependent upon our actions today.Written by speculative fiction writer and sustainability researcher Andrew Dana Hudson, Our Shared Storm features five overlapping fictions to employ a futurist technique called “scenarios thinking.” Rather than trying to predict how history will unfold—picking one out of many unpredictable and contingent branching paths—it instead creates a set of futures that represent major trends or counterposed possibilities, based on a set of climate modeling scenarios known as the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). Set in the year 2054, during the Conference of the Parties global climate negotiations (a.k.a., The COP) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Each story features a common cast of characters, but with events unfolding differently for them—and human society—in each alternate universe. These five scenarios highlight the political, economic, and culture possibilities of futures where investments in climate adaptation and mitigation promised today have been successfully completed, kicked down the road, or abandoned altogether. From harrowing to hopeful, these stories highlight the choices we must make to stabilize the planet. Our Shared Storm is an experiment in deploying practice-based research methods to explore the opportunities and challenges of using climate fiction to engage scientific and academic frameworks. As such, the book includes an introduction and afterword, providing a framework for examining the SSPs as speculative narratives and the COP as a site for climate imaginaries, and offering a new theoretical contribution in the concept of “post-normal fiction”—a humanities iteration of sustainability’s “post-normal science.”

Agriculture and empire : excavating plantation soil -- Planetarity : militarized radiations -- Accelerations : globalization and states of waste -- Oceanic futures : interspecies worldings -- An island is a world. In 'Allegories of the Anthropocene' Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey traces how indigenous and postcolonial peoples in the Caribbean and Pacific Islands grapple with the enormity of colonialism and anthropogenic climate change through art, poetry, and literature. In these works, authors and artists use allegory as a means to understand the multiscalar complexities of the Anthropocene and to critique the violence of capitalism, militarism, and the postcolonial state. DeLoughrey examines the work of a wide range of artists and writers-including poets Kamau Brathwaite and Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner, Dominican installation artist Tony Capellan, and authors Keri Hulme and Erna Brodber-whose work addresses Caribbean plantations, irradiated Pacific atolls, global flows of waste, and allegorical representations of the ocean and the island. In examining how island writers and artists address the experience of finding themselves at the forefront of the existential threat posed by climate change, DeLoughrey demonstrates how the Anthropocene and empire are mutually constitutive and establishes the vital importance of allegorical art and literature in understanding our global environmental crisis

Climate change, climate protection and climate policy must be regarded as drivers of structural change. Specifically, successful political pressure to protect the climate by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases leads to changes in Germany's economic structure. These changes are largely the result of government measures to increase the cost of energy and carbon dioxide emissions, for example through taxation and a system of tradable emission certificates. Faced with new risks and forced to reorganise production or gradually relocate where cost structures are more favourable, energy-intensive industries are especially hard hit. Other companies, however, particularly those supplying climate-friendly products or energy-efficient technologies, are finding golden opportunities in climate protection. Benefits will accrue when these products and technologies can be exported in such large quantities that the additional value added created in Germany exceeds the value added lost to price rises due to climate protection policies.

The current status of climate research shows that even in Germany we must expect to have deal with the effects of changes to the climate. When it comes to adjusting to the impact of climate change, the key players will be companies and local government. However, measures that can be taken in response to the risks and opportunities of climate change often require long-term planning. The present IW analysis thus investigates the current and future vulnerability of companies and communities in Germany, the likelihood of their being affected, and their capacity to adapt. Based on two national surveys of representatives of companies and local authorities, it reveals their expectations concerning the consequences of climate change and the degree to which they will be affected in each case. The comparison shows that municipalities and rural districts see themselves as more likely to be affected than business. Moreover, the degree to which this will occur is expected to increase considerably over the next 20 years, with a predominantly negative impact. Unless measures are taken to adapt to this change or at least expand the capacity for adjustment, the result will be growing vulnerability. For companies, the fields of logistics and investment and finance are considered to contain potential risks while the impact on sales is expected to be positive. For local communities, agriculture and forestry, health, water and sewage are particularly vulnerable. Given the financial plight of local administrations, economical solutions are particularly in demand. For an early response to climate change, a good supply of information and reliable data on the coming changes will be important for both local government and companies, and particularly so for the latter.
