    Barabbas, qui est un personnage secondaire des évangiles, qui ne semble présent que pour mettre en valeur l’injustice de la condamnation de Jésus, a été compris jusqu’au XIXe siècle comme un "personnage plat". Il fait l’objet d’une nouvelle lecture à partir de Victor Hugo ou de Marie Corelli qui le voient comme un homme plein de doutes voire de remords. Il devient ainsi ce "personnage rond" qui se questionne sur lui-même de Pär Lagerkvist ou de Michel de Ghelderode. Ce changement est très représentatif d’une époque marquée par la question de la complexité et de la faillibilité de l’être humain. Barabbas, an ancillary figure of the gospels, who only seems there to highlight the injustice of Jesus’ condemnation, was understood until the 19th century as a "flat character". This evolved with Victor Hugo and Marie Corelli, who saw him as a man full of doubts and even remorse. He thus becomes this "round character" who has questions about himself in the works of Pär Lagerkvist or Michel de Ghelderode. This shift reflects the concerns of an era marked by the complexity and fallibility of the human being.
