    Homer und Sophokles, Platon und Aristoteles: vier große Autoren, die die Essenz der griechischen Kultur mit besonderer Klarheit zum Vorschein kommen lassen, stehen im Fokus der gesammelten Aufsätze des Tübinger Gräzisten Thomas Alexander Szlezák. Die Zugangsart zu den dichterischen wie zu den philosophischen Texten ist dieselbe: das leitende methodische Prinzip muss das der alexandrinischen Philologie sein, jeden Autor primär aus ihm selbst zu erklären. Ein folgenreiches Novum ist die Anwendung der genannten Interpretationsmaxime auf Platon: Die einst von Schleiermacher irregeleitete Hermeneutik der Dialoge – sie seien autarke Werke, glaubte er – muss korrigiert werden. Platon selbst zwingt uns, die Dialoge gewiss nicht nur, aber wesentlich auch als Verweise auf jene Theorie der Prinzipien zu lesen, von der Aristoteles berichtet und die Platon mit vollem Bedacht aus seinem Schriftwerk herausgehalten hat. Homer and Sophocles, Plato and Aristotle: four great authors, who have let the essence of Greek culture appear with special clarity, are the focus of the collected essays by the Tübingen classical Greek scholar Thomas Alexander Szlezák. His approach to the poetic as to the philosophical texts is the same: the leading methodological principle has to be that of Alexandrian philology, namely to explicate each author from within himself. A novelty of considerable consequence is the application of the Alexandrian interpretive maxim to Plato: Schleiermacher’s misguided hermeneutic of the dialogues as self-sufficient works, which has found many followers to this day, must be corrected. Plato himself forces us to read the dialogues not only, but essentially also, as pointers to that theory of principles reported by Aristotle, yet deliberately excluded from his dialogues by Plato himself.

    Seit Hesiod und im Lauf der Geschichte der griechischen Literatur stellten idyllische Orte den Hintergrund für poetische Einsetzungen und Momente der Selbstreflexion dar, in denen Autoren Literaturgattungen hinterfragen, verbessern, erneut ergründen oder sogar neu begründen. Dies gilt vor allem für poetische Gattungen, da mehrere Dichter die Erzählung des Helikon-Gebirges hinterfragen, um ihre eigenen Werke definieren und ihre eigenen Ansichten etablieren zu können. Das gilt aber auch für Gattungen der Prosa, spätestens mit Phaedrus von Platon, dessen Setting – der locus amoenus des Flusses Ilisos – seinen Nachhall in den Werken mehrerer späterer Schriftsteller wiederfindet. Sich dem Diskurs über die Darstellung von Raum in der antiken Literatur anschließend, bietet der Band sieben Aufsätze zur spezifischen Verbindung zwischen Ortsbeschreibungen und der (Neu-)Gründung griechischer Literaturgattungen. Since Hesiod and throughout the history of Greek literature, idyllic places have often furnished the setting to poetical investitures and, more in general, to self-reflective moments in which authors question, correct, refound and even create literary genres. This is above all true for poetic genres, since several poets challenge the Hesiodic episode of Mount Helicon in order to define their own creations and produce their own manifestos, but it also applies to prose genres, starting at least with Plato’s Phaedrus, whose setting in the locus amoenus of the Ilissos River resonates in the works of several later writers. Joining the recent debate on the representation of space in ancient literature, this volume offers seven essays on the specific connection between the description of places and the renewal/foundation of Greek literary genres.

    Seit Hesiod und im Lauf der Geschichte der griechischen Literatur stellten idyllische Orte den Hintergrund für poetische Einsetzungen und Momente der Selbstreflexion dar, in denen Autoren Literaturgattungen hinterfragen, verbessern, erneut ergründen oder sogar neu begründen. Dies gilt vor allem für poetische Gattungen, da mehrere Dichter die Erzählung des Helikon-Gebirges hinterfragen, um ihre eigenen Werke definieren und ihre eigenen Ansichten etablieren zu können. Das gilt aber auch für Gattungen der Prosa, spätestens mit Phaedrus von Platon, dessen Setting – der locus amoenus des Flusses Ilisos – seinen Nachhall in den Werken mehrerer späterer Schriftsteller wiederfindet. Sich dem Diskurs über die Darstellung von Raum in der antiken Literatur anschließend, bietet der Band sieben Aufsätze zur spezifischen Verbindung zwischen Ortsbeschreibungen und der (Neu-)Gründung griechischer Literaturgattungen. Since Hesiod and throughout the history of Greek literature, idyllic places have often furnished the setting to poetical investitures and, more in general, to self-reflective moments in which authors question, correct, refound and even create literary genres. This is above all true for poetic genres, since several poets challenge the Hesiodic episode of Mount Helicon in order to define their own creations and produce their own manifestos, but it also applies to prose genres, starting at least with Plato’s Phaedrus, whose setting in the locus amoenus of the Ilissos River resonates in the works of several later writers. Joining the recent debate on the representation of space in ancient literature, this volume offers seven essays on the specific connection between the description of places and the renewal/foundation of Greek literary genres.
