    In the past decade, Pakistan has witnessed incidents such as the public lynching of a student on a university campus, a Christian couple being torched alive, attacks on entire neighbourhoods by angry mobs and the assassination of a provincial governor by his own security guard over allegations of blasphemy. Finding the Enemy Within unpacks the meanings and motivations behind accusations of blasphemy and subsequent violence in Pakistan. This is the first ethnographic study of its kind analysing the perspectives of a range of different actors including accusers, religious scholars and lawyers involved in blasphemy-related incidents in Pakistan. Bringing together anthropological perspectives on religion, violence and law, this book reworks prevalent analytical dichotomies of reason/emotion, culture/religion, traditional/Western, state/nonstate and legal/extralegal to extend our understanding of the upsurge of blasphemy-related violence in Pakistan. Through the case study of blasphemy accusations in Pakistan, this book addresses broader questions of difference, individual and collective identities, social and symbolic boundaries, and conflict and violence in modern nation-states.

    Jeannette Fischer untersucht die Antriebe, die zu Hass und zu hasserfüllten Handlungen führen. Hass gegen andere beginnt als Selbsthass. Dieser wiederum hat seine Ursache in Schuldgefühlen, die bereits in der Kindheit in uns ausgelöst wurden. Die Autorin illustriert das an Beispielen, u.a. an dem fürchterlichen Amoklauf von Anders Breivik vom Juli 2011 und an dem Entschluss eines jungen Kanadiers, sich dem IS anzuschließen. Die zugrundeliegenden Opfer/Täter- und Schuld/Unschuld-Narrative sind dominante Muster in vielen Handlungen und Diskursen; wir sind deren Gefangene. Das zeigt sich nicht nur auf der persönlichen Ebene, sondern auch im gesellschaftlichen und politischen Leben. Wir können Hass nicht beseitigen, indem wir ihn verurteilen, verabscheuen, ja gar hassen. Veränderung ist erst möglich, wenn wir den Teufelskreis verlassen und das ausleuchten, was zu seiner Entstehung führt. Jeannette Fischer examines what it is that leads to hate and to hateful actions. Hatred against others begins as self-hatred. This in turn has its cause in feelings of guilt that were already triggered in us in childhood. To illustrate this, the author uses examples like the horrific rampage of Anders Breivik in 2011 and the decision of a young Canadian to join the IS. The victim/perpetrator and guilt/innocence narrative is a dominant pattern in our actions and discourses; we are held prisoners by it. And it shows up not only at the personal level, but also in social and political interactions. We cannot eliminate hate by condemning it, abhorring it, even hating it. Change is brought about only by leaving the vicious circle and making clear what leads to its creation.

    In der amerikanischen Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik können Präsidenten beim Einsatz militärischer Gewalt zumeist auf einen vom Kongress nicht eingeschränkten Handlungsspielraum hoffen. Ausgehend von einer liberalen Theorieperspektive argumentiert die Studie, dass dafür auch eine am amerikanischen Exzeptionalismus ausgerichtete Identitätsrhetorik des Präsidenten verantwortlich ist, die Kongressmitglieder rhetorisch in die Ecke drängen und Kritik unterdrücken kann. Eine qualitative Untersuchung der Interventionsdiskurse während der Interventionen im Kosovo 1999, dem Irak-Krieg ab 2003 und der Intervention in Libyen 2011 zeigt, dass Kongressmitglieder vom Gebrauch ihrer verfassungsrechtlichen Kriegsvollmachten zurückschrecken, wenn ihnen geeignete Vetomöglichkeiten fehlen. In US military intervention policy, presidents can usually benefit from substantial room for manoeuvre, which is not called into question by Congress and its members. Based on a domestic perspective of US foreign policy, this study argues that presidents deploy tropes of American exceptionalism and that such rhetoric conduces to congressional deference by setting the terms of the debate and silencing prospective criticism. Three qualitative case studies of the military interventions and their respective discourses in Kosovo in 1999, Iraq as from 2003 and Libya in 2011 show that members of Congress defer to presidential warmongering when they are left without access to a societally sustainable rebuttal.

Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger des Bandes zeichnen teils die Handlungslogik und die Erzählstrategien nach, die die Anwendung von Eigengewalt plausibilisierten, teils untersuchen sie die rechtliche und religiöse Delegitimierung von Eigengewalt. Dabei finden die Bemühungen der Theologen, fehdeförmliche Gewaltanwendung als Gefahr für das Seelenheil des Individuums, aber auch als Problem für die Sicherheit aller zu diskreditieren, besondere Beachtung. Da sowohl für die Begründung wie für die Ablehnung von Gewalthandeln Emotionen zum Argument gemacht wurden, leisten einzelne Untersuchungen auch einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Emotionen. Mit Beiträgen von Maria Pia Alberzoni, Zdeněk Beran, Matthias Berlandi, Simone Brehmer, Maximilian Diesenberger, Jan Hirschbiegel, Peter Hoppenbrouwers, Marius Kraus, Stephen Mossman, Christine Reinle, Stefan Tebruck, Anna-Lena Wendel, Christian Wenzel, Klaus Wolf und Lidia Luisa Zanetti Domingue. Autonomous use of violence — whether for vengeance or in a feud — can potentially endanger community safety. The contributors to this volume depict the logic and narrative strategies used to validate the autonomous use of violence on the one hand, and examine attempts to delegitimise such violence through legal and religions norms on the other. In doing so, they focus on the endeavours of theologians to discredit violence used in a feud as a danger to the salvation of an individual’s soul and as a threat to everyone’s safety. As emotions are often cited as an argument for both justifying and rejecting violent action, some of the studies in this anthology also contribute to the history of emotions.     Jeannette Fischer untersucht die Antriebe, die zu Hass und zu hasserfüllten Handlungen führen. Hass gegen andere beginnt als Selbsthass. Dieser wiederum hat seine Ursache in Schuldgefühlen, die bereits in der Kindheit in uns ausgelöst wurden. Die Autorin illustriert das an Beispielen, u.a. an dem fürchterlichen Amoklauf von Anders Breivik vom Juli 2011 und an dem Entschluss eines jungen Kanadiers, sich dem IS anzuschließen. Die zugrundeliegenden Opfer/Täter- und Schuld/Unschuld-Narrative sind dominante Muster in vielen Handlungen und Diskursen; wir sind deren Gefangene. Das zeigt sich nicht nur auf der persönlichen Ebene, sondern auch im gesellschaftlichen und politischen Leben. Wir können Hass nicht beseitigen, indem wir ihn verurteilen, verabscheuen, ja gar hassen. Veränderung ist erst möglich, wenn wir den Teufelskreis verlassen und das ausleuchten, was zu seiner Entstehung führt. Jeannette Fischer examines what it is that leads to hate and to hateful actions. Hatred against others begins as self-hatred. This in turn has its cause in feelings of guilt that were already triggered in us in childhood. To illustrate this, the author uses examples like the horrific rampage of Anders Breivik in 2011 and the decision of a young Canadian to join the IS. The victim/perpetrator and guilt/innocence narrative is a dominant pattern in our actions and discourses; we are held prisoners by it. And it shows up not only at the personal level, but also in social and political interactions. We cannot eliminate hate by condemning it, abhorring it, even hating it. Change is brought about only by leaving the vicious circle and making clear what leads to its creation.

    There is a consensus that the proportion of suicides committed with a firearm is the best proxy for gun ownership prevalence. Cerqueira et al. (2018) exploit the socioeconomic characteristics of suicide victims in order to develop a new and more refined proxy. It is based on the fixed effects of the victim's place of residence estimated from a discrete choice model for the likelihood of committing suicide with gun. We empirically assess this new indicator using gun ownership data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and suicide registers of the US National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) from 1995 through 2004. We show that this alternative proxy correlates more with the percentage of households with firearms than the conventional proxy based on the proportion of suicides committed with a firearm.

    On July 13, 2020 a complete nation-wide ban was placed on the sale and transport of alcohol in South Africa. This paper evaluates the impact of this sudden and unexpected five-week alcohol prohibition on mortality due to unnatural causes. We find that the policy reduced the number of unnatural deaths by 21 per day, or approximately 740 over the five-week period. This constitutes a 14% decrease in the total number of deaths due to unnatural causes. We argue that this represents a lower bound on the impact of alcohol on short-run mortality, and underscores the severe influence that alcohol has on society - even in the short-run.
