Und dieses Diktum, so konnte man noch Anfang der 1990er Jahre im Sonderheft der"Deutschen Zeitschrift für Soziologie"lesen, gelte unverändert. Warum sich die Soziologie mit den Phänomenen der Gewalt so schwer tut, ist eine der zentralen Fragen, mit denen sich das vorliegende Buch beschäftigt. In seiner Studie analysiert Jan Philipp Reemtsma zunächst, was Vertrauen und vor allem Vertrauen in die Moderne heißt - und in welcher Weise dieses Vertrauen an die besonderen Legitimationsanforderungen gebunden ist, denen der Gebrauch von Gewalt in der Moderne unterworfen ist. Er fragt, wie extreme Destruktivität neben dem modernen Programm der Gewalteinschränkung oder trotz dieses Programms bestehen kann und warum und wie das Vertrauen in die Moderne ungeachtet der Gewaltexzesse des 20. Jahrhunderts fortbesteht. Das Buch untersucht die Phänomene der Gewalt in ihrem unterschiedlichen Körperbezug und in ihrem Verhältnis zur Ausübung von Macht, es fragt, aus welchem Grund bestimmte Gewaltformen in der Moderne tabuisiert worden sind, obwohl sie nach wie vor fortbestehen, und in welcher Weise dieses Fortbestehen besondere Wahrnehmungs- und Analyseschwierigkeiten produziert. Dieser Blick auf die Moderne konkurriert nicht mit anderen, sondern ergänzt sie und bedient sich dabei einer besonderen Beschreibungstechnik. Weiträumige Überblicke über historische, politische, literarische oder philosophische Entwicklungen von der Antike bis in unsere Gegenwart wechseln mit einer Konzentration auf konkrete Ereignisse ab; soziologische Reflexionen und historisches Beispielmaterial werden durch philologische Analysen ergänzt und zum Beispiel anhand einer Auseinandersetzung mit William Shakespeare als einem Theoretiker von Macht und Gewalt oder anhand einer Betrachtung von Friedrich Schillers Konzeption des Desperado im "Wilhelm Tell" verdeutlicht.

    Der Psychiater Payk leistet eine kenntnisreiche Zusammenschau der wissenschaftlichen Befunde zu den Erscheinungsformen und Ursachen des Bösen im Menschen. Er stellt das Phänomen in den geschichtlichen Kontext, beleuchtet die Facetten des Bösen und ihre Protagonisten (Hass/Fanatismus, Krieg, Völkermord, Holocaust, Terrorismus), liefert Psychogramme der "Mörder-Typen" (u.a. Massenmörder, Amokläufer, Serienkiller, mordende Frauen, Kannibalen), stellt die Hypothesen zur Entstehung des Bösen vor und beschreibt schließlich die "Faszination des Bösen" anhand von Beispielen (u.a. Lust zu töten; Verherrlichung von Gewalt; Tierquälerei; Sensationslust). Das Fazit des Autors, dass die von Menschen begangenen bösen Taten kein unvorhersehbares Unheil seien, sondern seiner Natur entsprächen, ein "Integral von anlagebedingten und durch misslungene Sozialisation entstandenen Persönlichkeitsdefekten bzw. psychischen Anomalien" seien, mag so neu nicht sein, entspricht aber dem Kenntnisstand.
