    Religion has had been foundational in shaping Italy. Home to the Vatican State, the Italian peninsula is the religious centre for one billion Catholics globally. It is also increasingly home to those of other faiths, especially Islam. Italy’s development as a contemporary post-secular and multi-religious society is fraught and fascinating. The recent return of religious discourse from the margins of Western society to a central position is a sign of what German philosopher, Jürgen Habermas, has defined as the post-secular condition. Habermas and others have questioned what most people in the West had, up to a few years ago, taken for granted: the unstoppable forward march of secularization and the subsequent marginalization of religion. Instead, one of the greatest global fault-lines in the contemporary world – the divide between absolutist extremist Islamic faith and liberal, but Christian-inflected, secular values – has religious identity at its core. The first book-length study to examine religion in contemporary Italian cinema and television fiction, Screening Religions in Italy identifies two key issues: how Italian filmmaking constructs the continuing position of religion in the public sphere and why religion persists on Italian screens. It spans genres such as horror, comedy, hagiopics, and TV fiction, and explores both commercial and art-house filmmaking. It treats films and television series that range from Moretti’s Habemus Papam to Sorrentino’s The Young Pope

    Internet technology presents a new conceptual reality, one that could potentially challenge religion in subtle but distinct ways. Few sociologists of religion, however, have attempted to evaluate whether using the Internet impacts the way people think about and practice religion. This article elaborates on the concept of "tinkering" discussed by Berger, Berger, and Kellner (1974), Turkle (1997), and Wuthnow (2010) to argue that Internet use affects how people think about and affiliate with religious traditions. Using data from Wave III of the Baylor Religion Survey (2010), I find that Internet use is associated with increases in being religiously unaffiliated and decreases in religious exclusivism. At the same time, I find that television viewing is linked to decreases in religious attendance and other time-related religious activities, but these outcomes are not impacted by Internet use. To explain these disparate findings, I argue that the Internet is fundamentally different from previous technologies like television and thus impacts religious beliefs and belonging but not time-related religious activities.

The book analyses the rich variety of technical objects, semiotic arrangements, communication processes and forms of data processing that Beckett's work so uniquely engages with, as well as those that - in historically changing configurations - determine the continuing performance, the audience reception, and the scholarly study of this work. Beckett and media draws on a variety of innovative theoretical approaches, such as media archaeology, in order to discuss Beckett's intermedial oeuvre. As such, the book engages with Beckett as a media artist and examines the way his engagement with media technologies continues to speak to our cultural situation

    Es gibt eine Philosophie des Films und auch der Fotografie, aber bisher keine des Fernsehens, obwohl es sich dabei fraglos um das wichtigste und bis heute wirkmächtigste Bildregime der Gegenwart handelt. Lorenz Engell unterzieht es nun einer zugleich technikphilosophischen, ontologischen, ästhetischen und anthropologischen Lektüre. Die Entstehung und die Struktur auch der aktuellsten Bildwelten erscheint vor diesem Hintergrund in einem neuen Licht.Das Schaltbild betrachtet das Fernsehen als das, was auf dem Bildschirm und jenseits davon geschieht und damit vor allem als Operation des Schaltens von Bild zu Bild. Es schlägt so eine neue Definition des Fernsehens als das erste Bild vor, das seine Begrenzung nicht dadurch erfährt, dass es gerahmt ist oder einen Anfang und ein Ende hat, sondern indem es ein-, aus- und umgeschaltet werden kann. Gerade durch die Operation des Schaltens gestaltet das Fernsehen die Welt von innen heraus und als Verlauf eben dieser Gestaltung.Im Laufe seiner Geschichte steigert das Fernsehen die Produktion und Zirkulation von Bildern exponentiell. Es transformiert die Welt und sich selbst von einem analogen in einen digitalen Zustand und von einem zentralen Perspektivismus in eine Pluriperspektive. Das Fernsehen macht nun seine eigene Geschichte. Im Raum schafft es eine Mediasphäre als seinen Lebensraum und damit neue Formen des In-der-Welt-Seins, der Nähe und Distanz und der Skalierung. Das Fernsehen arbeitet daran, was ein Subjekt und ein Objekt ist, was den Menschen ausmacht, und letztlich auch daran, wie es möglich ist, dass es überhaupt etwas gibt und nicht nichts. Das Schaltbild entwirft eine Philosophie des Fernsehens, die grundlegende Fragen zwischen Ontologie und Anthropologie aufwirft

    Es gibt eine Philosophie des Films und auch der Fotografie, aber bisher keine des Fernsehens, obwohl es sich dabei fraglos um das wichtigste und bis heute wirkmächtigste Bildregime der Gegenwart handelt. Lorenz Engell unterzieht es nun einer zugleich technikphilosophischen, ontologischen, ästhetischen und anthropologischen Lektüre. Die Entstehung und die Struktur auch der aktuellsten Bildwelten erscheint vor diesem Hintergrund in einem neuen Licht. Das Schaltbild betrachtet das Fernsehen als das, was auf dem Bildschirm und jenseits davon geschieht und damit vor allem als Operation des Schaltens von Bild zu Bild. Es schlägt so eine neue Definition des Fernsehens als das erste Bild vor, das seine Begrenzung nicht dadurch erfährt, dass es gerahmt ist oder einen Anfang und ein Ende hat, sondern indem es ein-, aus- und umgeschaltet werden kann. Gerade durch die Operation des Schaltens gestaltet das Fernsehen die Welt von innen heraus und als Verlauf eben dieser Gestaltung. Im Laufe seiner Geschichte steigert das Fernsehen die Produktion und Zirkulation von Bildern exponentiell. Es transformiert die Welt und sich selbst von einem analogen in einen digitalen Zustand und von einem zentralen Perspektivismus in eine Pluriperspektive. Das Fernsehen macht nun seine eigene Geschichte. Im Raum schafft es eine Mediasphäre als seinen Lebensraum und damit neue Formen des In-der-Welt-Seins, der Nähe und Distanz und der Skalierung. Das Fernsehen arbeitet daran, was ein Subjekt und ein Objekt ist, was den Menschen ausmacht, und letztlich auch daran, wie es möglich ist, dass es überhaupt etwas gibt und nicht nichts. Das Schaltbild entwirft eine Philosophie des Fernsehens, die grundlegende Fragen zwischen Ontologie und Anthropologie aufwirft.

    Zusammenfassung: Auf der Grundlage einer theoretischen Modellierung des Verhältnisses von Realität und Fiktion beschreibt die vorliegende Arbeit die Entwicklung und Evaluation eines Trainingsprogramms für jugendliche HauptschülerInnen, das die Fähigkeit zu Unterscheidungen zwischen Realität und Fiktion im Fernsehen fördern soll. Die empirische Evaluation in einem 2x2 Prä-Post-Design mit Kontrollgruppe bescheinigt dem Training eine hohe Wirksamkeit in allen erhobenen Variablen. Damit erweist sich auch das theoretische Konzept als angemessen und steht nun für weitere Untersuchungen zur Verfügung Zusammenfassung: Working on the basis of a theoretical modelling of the relationship between reality and fiction, the following thesis outlines the development and evaluation of a training programme for young German Hauptschule students. Said programme is aimed at developing effective differentiation between televisual fact and fiction. The empirical evaluation in a 2x2 Pre-Post-Design, in presence of a control group, attests to the high effectiveness of the training, with all featured variables considered. As such, the theoretical concept too is demonstrated to be appropriate and can now be drawn upon in future research
