    Johann Baptist Cramer (1771-1858), descendant of a family of musicians from the German Kurpfalz, is known today at most for his piano etudes; during his lifetime he was a public figure in the European musical world, not only as a pianist, composer, and teacher, but also as an entrepreneur in piano manufacturing and publishing. Through this multiple function, as many 'pianistes compositeurs' of his time fulfilled, interactions occurred between different areas of musical life, between instrumental technology, human dexterity, and musical aesthetics, between entrepreneurship, canon formation, and popular culture. In this volume, Cramer's life, work, and environment are examined from a variety of perspectives with suggestions for performance and improvisational practices today. With contributions by Sanne Behrends Lorenzen | Gigliola di Grazia | Michael Fischer | Christa Jost | Janina Klassen | Leonardo Miucci | Laurens Patzlaff | Claudia Schweitzer | Philipp Teriete | Rüdiger Thomsen-Fürst | Edoardo Torbianelli Johann Baptist Cramer (1771–1858), Spross einer kurpfälzischen Musikerfamilie, ist heute höchstens noch durch seine Klavieretüden bekannt; zu Lebzeiten war er eine öffentliche Gestalt der europäischen Musikwelt, und zwar nicht nur als Pianist, Komponist und Lehrer, sondern auch als Unternehmer im Klavierbau und Verlagswesen. Durch diese Mehrfachfunktion, wie sie viele ›Pianistes Compositeurs‹ seiner Zeit ausfüllten, kam es zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen verschiedenen Bereichen des Musiklebens, zwischen instrumentaler Technologie, menschlicher Fingertechnik und musikalischer Ästhetik, zwischen Unternehmertum, Kanonbildung und Populärkultur.     Zusammenfassung: Die vorliegende bildungsgeographische Untersuchung thematisiert den Migrationshintergrund von Lehrern aus der Sicht verschiedener schulischer Akteure. Sie leistet einen Beitrag dazu, den aktuellen Übergang, in der sich die Bildungslandschaft bezüglich der ethnischen und kulturellen Heterogenität in den Lehrerzimmern befindet, zu dokumentieren und reflexiv zu begleiten. Dies geschieht auf einer Makro-, Meso- und Mikroebene in folgenden Schritten. Der empirische Teil der Arbeit beginnt mit einer Analyse von offiziellen Daten aus dem Mikrozensus und dem Statistischen Landesamt Baden-Württemberg zur Präsenz von Lehrern mit Migrationshintergrund. Die dabei konstatierte Unterrepräsentanz dieser Lehrer spiegelt sich auch in den Ergebnissen der daran angeschlossenen eigenen Erhebung. In einer telefonischen Befragung (Vollerhebung, n = 124) wurden die Schulleiter der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart interviewt. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden zehn Schulen in Stuttgart ausgewählt, an denen jeweils die schulischen Akteure Schulleiter, Lehrer, Schüler und Eltern mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund (n = 75) in problemzentrierten Leitfadeninterviews (n = 61) befragt wurden. Die Arbeit bezieht erstmals die Perspektiven all dieser schulischen Akteure ein, die jeweils einer konkreten Schule angehören. In theoretischer Hinsicht liegen der Dissertation handlungstheoretische Ansätze zugrunde, die sich an Giddens und Werlen orientieren, sowie eine breite bildungs- und kulturgeographische Perspektive. Diese Dissertation weist erstmalig nach, dass (1) Lehrer mit Migrationshintergrund auch bei einer Betrachtung auf der Meso- und Mikroebene unterrepräsentiert sind. Dabei wurden (2) räumliche Disparitäten in der Verteilung der wahrgenommenen Lehrer mit Migrationshintergrund identifiziert. Es herrscht z.B. ein Zusammenhang zwischen dem Anteil der ausländischen Schüler und dem Anteil der Lehrer mit Migrationshintergrund, was sowohl als positive als auch als negative Diskriminierung interpretiert werden kann. Gleichzeitig wird (3) der Migrationshintergrund von Lehrern weder von ihnen selbst noch von den anderen Akteuren thematisiert. Darüber hinaus haben sich (4) unterschiedliche Strategien dieser Lehrer im Umgang mit ihrem Hintergrund herauskristallisiert, die von Offenheit, über Zurückhaltung bis zur Vermeidung reichen. Der schulische Alltag von Lehrern mit Migrationshintergrund bewegt sich (5) in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Ressourcen und Hindernissen, die in einem dynamischen, wechselseitigen Verhältnis zueinander stehen. Diese Dynamik wird von ressourcenfördernden und hindernisbegünstigenden Faktoren gespeist, die die Akteure auf den verschiedenen Maßstabsebenen durch ihr individuelles, alltägliches Handeln beeinflussen. Schließlich hat sich gezeigt, (6) dass viele Aussagen der Akteure erst durch eine Einbettung in den geographischen Kontext nachvollziehbar werden Zusammenfassung: This Geography of Education study focusses on the migration background of teachers in Germany considering perspectives of different interest groups at school. The study documents and reflects the current transition of the education sector concerning the ethnic and cultural diversity among teachers. The empirical part of the study starts with an analysis of the presence of teachers with a migration background based on official data (microcensus; Statistical State Office Baden-Württemberg). The following self-conducted survey starts with a telephone survey among all headmasters in Stuttgart, the capital of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg (n=124). Based on the results, ten schools in Stuttgart were selected for the next step. In each school face-to-face interviews were held with the headmaster, teachers, pupils and parents with and without migration background (n=75). For the first time, a study includes all interest groups in respective schools. This dissertation is based on the action theory by Giddens and Werlen as well as on perspectives used in the Geography of Education and Cultural Geography. This dissertation proves for the first time (1) that teachers with a migration background are underrepresented also on meso- and micro-levels. (2) By analysing the distribution of teachers with a migration background spatial disparities were identified. For example, the percentage of foreign pupils correlates with the percentage of teachers with a migration background that, depending on the interpretation, could be the result of positive or negative discrimination. At the same time, (3) the migration background is no issue at schools; neither teachers with a migration background themselves nor the other interest groups discuss it. (4) In addition, the study reveals different strategies of those teachers dealing with their background: there are open, reserving and avoidance strategies. (5) Teachers with a migration background work in an area of conflict between opportunity and obstacle that interact dynamically and reciprocally. This dynamic is supported by factors that raise opportunities and obstacles and it is influenced by the individual daily action of the interest groups. Finally it is shown that (6) many statements by the interest groups can be comprehended only in the geographical context.

    This paper investigates the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in choosing a teaching career using data from the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia. We find that the opportunity costs of becoming a teacher vary by gender: women enjoy a small wage premium, whilst males suffer a large wage penalty. We also find that non-monetary aspects and job amenities (such as motivation for the job, job security, and work/family life balance) have a different influence on teaching careers by gender, which can influence the sorting of male and female teachers across government and private schools. Notwithstanding evidence of positive selection into teaching in terms of cognitive ability and motivation for the job, the asymmetries in opportunity costs and non-monetary aspects reveal that introducing differentiated contracts tailored to gender preferences may influence teachers' recruitment by gender. However, we caution that such prospective initiatives need to balance the trade-off between attracting talented and motivated individuals into teaching and promoting gender equality, which arises from the data.

    We examine whether and how teachers' major fields of study affect students' achievement, exploiting within-student variation across subfields in natural science (i.e., physics, chemistry, biology, and Earth science). Using middle-school students' data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and controlling student-teacher fixed effects, we find that teachers with college majors in natural sciences improve students' achievement of subfields in natural sciences corresponding to their subfields of college majors. Teaching practices explain about half of the effect of teachers' major fields. Most of the effects of teaching practices are accounted for by teachers' preparation for teaching science topics. The results are robust to potential endogenous matching between students and teachers.

Durch diese Mehrfachfunktion, wie sie viele ›Pianistes Compositeurs‹ seiner Zeit ausfüllten, kam es zu Wechselwirkungen zwischen verschiedenen Bereichen des Musiklebens, zwischen instrumentaler Technologie, menschlicher Fingertechnik und musikalischer Ästhetik, zwischen Unternehmertum, Kanonbildung und Populärkultur. Im vorliegenden Band werden Cramers Leben, Werk und Umfeld aus verschiedenen Perspektiven untersucht mit Anregungen für Aufführungs- und Improvisationpraktiken heute. Through this multiple function, as many 'pianistes compositeurs' of his time fulfilled, interactions occurred between different areas of musical life, between instrumental technology, human dexterity, and musical aesthetics, between entrepreneurship, canon formation, and popular culture.
