    We present first experimental evidence that relative performance feedback improves both the speed and quality with which challenging long-term tasks are completed. Providing university students with ongoing relative feedback on accumulated course credits accelerates graduation by 0.12 SD, and also improves grades by 0.063 SD. Treatment effects are concentrated among students with medium pre-treatment graduation probabilities: when these students are informed about an above-average performance, their outcomes improve - otherwise their outcomes deteriorate. Combined with survey evidence, this pattern of results suggests that learning about own ability is a plausible mechanism.

    In this paper we develop a novel semi-nonparametric panel copula model with external covariates for the study of wage rank dynamics. We focus on nonlinear dependence between the current and lagged worker's ranks in the wage residuals distribution, conditionally on individual characteristics. We show the asymptotic normality of the Sieve estimator for our preferred mobility measure, which is an irregular functional of both the finite- and infinite-dimensional parameters, in the double asymptotics with N,T → ∞. We derive an analytical bias correction for the incidental parameters bias induced by the individual fixed-effects. We apply our model to US data and we find that relative mobility at the bottom of the distribution is high for workers with a college degree and some experience. On the contrary, less-educated individuals are likely to remain stuck at the bottom of the wage rank distribution year after year.

    I provide evidence on the causal effects of a student's relative socioeconomic status during high school on their mental health and human capital development. Leveraging data from representative US high schools, I utilize between-cohort differences in the distributions of socioeconomic status within schools in a linear fixed effects model to identify a causal rank effect. I find that a higher rank during high school improves a student's depression scores, cognitive ability, self-esteem and popularity. The rank effects are persistent with long-lasting consequences for adult depression and college attainment. Additional analyses emphasize the role of inequality in exacerbating these rank effects.
