How do intellectual property rights influence academic science? We investigate the consequences of the introduction of software patents in the U.S. on the publications of university researchers in the field of computer science. Difference-in-difference estimations reveal that software scientists at U.S. universities produced fewer publications (both in terms of quantity and quality) than their European counterparts after patent rights for software inventions were introduced. We then introduce a theoretical model that accounts for substitution and complementarity between patenting and publishing as well as for the direction of research. In line with the model’s prediction, further results show that the decrease in publications is largest for scientists at the bottom of the ability distribution. Further, we evidence a change in the direction of research following the reform towards more applied research.

The paper at hand provides deep insights into the development of the German bioeconomy at the municipality level. The aim was to find out which determinants play a role in the location of bioeconomy patents at the municipality level and to analyze the respective stages of the bioeconomy in the industry life cycle (ILC). Within the three fields of biomass, biotechnology, and biomaterials, subfields were built through a keyword-driven approach to capture the bioeconomy. We conducted a logit regression model using the following data sets: population density, the area of forestry and agriculture, German Federal subsidy data, topic-specific patents and publications, as well as the overall patent and publication activity. The results indicate that the researched bioeconomy fields are in different stages of their life cycles and that they perhaps change the known structure of the life cycles. It appears that bioeconomy patents rather emerge in rural areas, and that there is only a minor influence of the usage of the surrounding landscape. Most of the subfields show a positive reaction to public subsidies. Furthermore, path dependence is strongly influencing the occurrence of bioeconomy patents. Our research can be used by diverse stakeholder groups, especially federal and local politicians as well as scientists, and contribute to the understanding of the bioeconomy on the so far relatively uncommon, but comprehensive level of municipalities.

This paper provides insights into the apparent seesaw between the generation of theoretical versus empirical economics research over time. A dynamic model considers the incentives of researchers to focus on empirical versus theoretical papers. It yields the main characteristics of the path-changing of economics research, from theoretical-intensive to empirical-focused. The model has two equilibria, one with a higher proportion of theoretical papers and another with a higher proportion of empirical papers. Curiously, the equilibrium with greater theoretical papers is stable, while the one with more empirical papers is a saddle point. This suggests that the current trend of increasing empirical research is unlikely to last.

Most bibliometric databases only provide names as the handle to their careers leading to the issue of namesakes. We introduce a universal method to assess the risk of linking documents of different individuals sharing the same name with the goal of collecting the documents into personalized clusters. A theoretical setup for the probability of drawing a namesake depending on the number of namesakes in the population and the size of the observed unit replaces the need for training datasets, thereby avoiding a namesake bias caused by the inherent underestimation of namesakes in training/benchmark data. A Poisson model based on a master sample of unambiguously identified individuals estimates the main component, the number of namesakes for any given name. To implement the algorithm, we reduce the complexity in the data by resolving similarity in properties. At the core of the implementation is a mechanism returning the unit size of the intersected mutual properties linking two documents. Because of the high computational demands of this mechanism, it is a necessity to discuss means to optimize the procedure.
