    "Liminal Spaces is an intimate exploration into the migration narratives of fifteen women of Guyanese heritage. It spans diverse inter-generational perspectives – from those who leave Guyana, and those who are left – and seven seminal decades of Guyana’s history – from the 1950s to the present day – bringing the voices of women to the fore. The volume is conceived of as a visual exhibition on the page; a four-part journey navigating the contributors’ essays and artworks, allowing the reader to trace the migration path of Guyanese women from their moment of departure, to their arrival on diasporic soils, to their reunion with Guyana.

    Eloquent and visually stunning, Liminal Spaces unpacks the global realities of migration, challenging and disrupting dominant narratives associated with Guyana, its colonial past, and its post-colonial present as a ‘disappearing nation’. Multimodal in approach, the volume combines memoir, creative non-fiction, poetry, photography, art and curatorial essays to collectively examine the mutable notion of ‘homeland’, and grapple with ideas of place and accountability.This volume is a welcome contribution to the scholarly field of international migration, transnationalism, and diaspora, both in its creative methodological approach, and in its subject area – as one of the only studies published on Guyanese diaspora. Bekannte Bildformeln aus Porträt-, Akt- oder Lebenstreppen-Darstellungen finden sich darin wieder. Diese neue Sichtbarkeit des Alters wirkt sich auch auf die Vorstellungen von Sexualmoral, Großelternschaft, Generationenverhältnissen und Lebensläufen aus. Sabine Kampmann untersucht den Bedeutungswechsel, den die Bilder des Alterns erfahren haben, und zeigt, wie die Fotografie unsere Auffassungen vom Altern beeinflusst. Sie stellt Werke von Giorgione, Lucas Cranach und Bernardo Strozzi ebenso wie von Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka und Melanie Manchot vor. Old human bodies are by no means taboo in our visual environment. They are particularly present in photographs and can be found especially in well-known picture formulas from portraits, nudes or representations of stages of life. This new visibility of old age also affects ideas about sexual morality, grandparenthood, generational relationships and courses of life. Sabine Kampmann examines the change in meaning that the images of aging have experienced and shows how photography influences our conceptions of aging. She presents works by Giorgione, Lucas Cranach and Bernardo Strozzi as well as by Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka, and Melanie Manchot.

    Die Studie entwickelt eine medienbiografische Perspektive auf Smartphone-Fotopraktiken in der Adoleszenz. Sie fragt nach ihrer Relevanz für Biografiearbeit als Teil der Identitätsentwicklung und beleuchtet Praktiken vor dem Hintergrund medienbiografischer Erfahrungen. Biografizität und visuelle Kompetenz werden als Bildungsziele der Medienpädagogik reflektiert. Anhand der dokumentarischen Methode wurden hierzu Interviews und Fotografien der interviewten Jugendlichen interpretiert, wobei die Kommunikationskontexte sozialer Medien systematisch einbezogen wurden. Hieraus ging die Typologie ‚visuelle Biografiearbeit‘ hervor, die milieuspezifisch unterschiedliche Formen fotografiebezogener Kommunikations- und Biografisierungsprozesse offenlegt. This study develops a media biographical perspective on adolescents’ use of smartphones for photography. It investigates smartphones’ relevance in biographical work as part of identity development and examines their use against the background of media biographical experiences, while also reflecting on biographicality and visual literacy as goals of media pedagogy. Using the documentary method, the author interprets interviews with and photographs of young people, while systematically incorporating the communication contexts of social media. This results in the typology of 'visual biographical work', which reveals milieu-specific forms of communication and biographical processes related to photography.

    Anke Gleber examines one of the most intriguing and characteristic figures of European urban modernity: the observing city stroller, or flaneur. In an age transformed by industrialism, the flaneur drifted through city streets, inspired and repelled by the surrounding scenes of splendor and squalor. Gleber examines this often elusive figure in the particular contexts of Weimar Germany and the intellectual sphere of Walter Benjamin, with whom the concept of flanerie is often associated. She sketches the European influences that produced the German flaneur and establishes the figure as a pervasive presence in Weimar culture, as well as a profound influence on modern perceptions of public space. The book begins by exploring the theory of literary flanerie and the technological changes--street lighting, public transportation, and the emergence of film--that gave a new status to the activities of seeing and walking in the modern city. Gleber then assesses the place of flanerie in works by Benjamin, Siegfried Kracauer, and other representatives of Weimar literature, arts, and theory. She draws particular attention to the works of Franz Hessel, a Berlin flaneur who argued that flanerie is a "reading" of the city that perceives passersby, streets, and fleeting impressions as the transitory signs of modernity. Gleber also examines connections between flanerie and Weimar film, and discusses female flanerie as a means of asserting female subjectivity in the public realm. The book is a deeply original and searching reassessment of the complex intersections among modernity, vision, and public space

    This Special Issue of Arts investigates the use of digital methods in the study of art markets and their histories. As historical and contemporary data is rapidly becoming more available, and digital technologies are becoming integral to research in the humanities and social sciences, we sought to bring together contributions that reflect on the different strategies that art market scholars employ to navigate and negotiate digital techniques and resources. The essays in this issue cover a wide range of topics and research questions. Taken together, the essays offer a reflection on what takes to research art markets, which includes addressing difficult topics such as the nature of the research questions and the data available to us, and the conceptual aspects of art markets, in order to define and operationalize variables and to interpret visual and statistical patterns for scholarship. In our view, this discussion is enriched when also taking into account how to use shared or interoperable ontologies and vocabularies to define concepts and relationships that facilitate the use and exchange of linked (open) data for cultural heritage and historical research.

    Explores the intersection and history of American literary realism and the performance of spiritual and racial embodiment. Recovering a series of ecstatic performances in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American realism, Realist Ecstasy travels from camp meetings to Native American ghost dances to storefront church revivals to explore realism’s relationship to spiritual experience. In her approach to realism as both an unruly archive of performance and a wide-ranging repertoire of media practices—including literature, photography, audio recording, and early film—Lindsay V. Reckson argues that the real was repetitively enacted and reenacted through bodily practice. Realist Ecstasy demonstrates how the realist imagining of possessed bodies helped construct and naturalize racial difference, while excavating the complex, shifting, and dynamic possibilities embedded in ecstatic performance: its production of new and immanent forms of being beside. Across her readings of Stephen Crane, James Weldon Johnson, and Nella Larsen, among others, Reckson triangulates secularism, realism, and racial formation in the post-Reconstruction moment. Realist Ecstasy shows how post-Reconstruction realist texts mobilized gestures—especially the gestures associated with religious ecstasy—to racialize secularism itself. Reckson offers us a distinctly new vision of American realism as a performative practice, a sustained account of how performance lives in and through literary archives, and a rich sense of how closely secularization and racialization were linked in Jim Crow America.

    Die Studie entwickelt eine medienbiografische Perspektive auf Smartphone-Fotopraktiken in der Adoleszenz. Sie fragt nach ihrer Relevanz für Biografiearbeit als Teil der Identitätsentwicklung und beleuchtet Praktiken vor dem Hintergrund medienbiografischer Erfahrungen. Biografizität und visuelle Kompetenz werden als Bildungsziele der Medienpädagogik reflektiert. Anhand der dokumentarischen Methode wurden hierzu Interviews und Fotografien der interviewten Jugendlichen interpretiert, wobei die Kommunikationskontexte sozialer Medien systematisch einbezogen wurden. Hieraus ging die Typologie ‚visuelle Biografiearbeit‘ hervor, die milieuspezifisch unterschiedliche Formen fotografiebezogener Kommunikations- und Biografisierungsprozesse offenlegt. This study develops a media biographical perspective on adolescents’ use of smartphones for photography. It investigates smartphones’ relevance in biographical work as part of identity development and examines their use against the background of media biographical experiences, while also reflecting on biographicality and visual literacy as goals of media pedagogy. Using the documentary method, the author interprets interviews with and photographs of young people, while systematically incorporating the communication contexts of social media. This results in the typology of 'visual biographical work', which reveals milieu-specific forms of communication and biographical processes related to photography.

    Alte menschliche Körper werden in unserer visuellen Umwelt keineswegs tabuisiert. Vor allem in Fotografien sind sie präsent. Bekannte Bildformeln aus Porträt-, Akt- oder Lebenstreppen-Darstellungen finden sich darin wieder. Diese neue Sichtbarkeit des Alters wirkt sich auch auf die Vorstellungen von Sexualmoral, Großelternschaft, Generationenverhältnissen und Lebensläufen aus. Sabine Kampmann untersucht den Bedeutungswechsel, den die Bilder des Alterns erfahren haben, und zeigt, wie die Fotografie unsere Auffassungen vom Altern beeinflusst. Sie stellt Werke von Giorgione, Lucas Cranach und Bernardo Strozzi ebenso wie von Nicholas Nixon, Annegret Soltau, Miwa Yanagi, Andres Serrano, Erwin Olaf, Roman Opalka und Melanie Manchot vor. Old human bodies are by no means taboo in our visual environment. They are particularly present in photographs and can be found especially in well-known picture formulas from portraits, nudes or representations of stages of life. This new visibility of old age also affects ideas about sexual morality, grandparenthood, generational relationships and courses of life. Sabine Kampmann examines the change in meaning that the images of aging have experienced and shows how photography influences our conceptions of aging.
