Wie kamen sie zu ihrer Rolle, welche Motive treiben sie in ihrem Engagement an, welche Wertvorstellungen vertreten sie? Die Studie ermöglicht detaillierte Einblicke in die Funktionsweise von Zivilgesellschaft in sozial schwachen Stadtteilen. Sie benennt Hindernisse und Schwierigkeiten für die Aktiven - zeigt aber auch Perspektiven, wie das partizipative Versprechen der modernen Bürgergesellschaft für sozial Benachteiligte eingelöst werden könnte. Manuela Wade geht diesen Prozessen nach und zeigt, wie die Bewohner_innen von drei ausgewählten Stadtvierteln in unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt damit umgehen, welche Rolle Wohnen in diesem Kontext spielt und warum dies zu einer Repolitisierung der Stadt führen kann. Increasing disparities within cities, the privatization of the public sector, the growing cost of housing - Processes like these manifest in single urban districts and create conditions for citizens' initiatives. At the same time, places change in meaning due to people's actions on the one hand and government strategies on the other. Manuela Wade follows these processes and shows how the inhabitants of three selected urban districts in different parts of the world deal with it, what the role of housing is in this context, and why space as a category is relevant for participation research.

    In The Eyes of the People entwickelt der Politikwissenschaftler Jeffrey Edward Green unter der Bezeichnung »Okulare Demokratie« eine grundlegend neue Theorie demokratischer Teilhabe. Dabei wird der Blick der Bürger_innen als Instrument demokratischer Kontrolle hervorgehoben, in dessen Fokus nicht Inhalte, sondern die öffentliche Performance von Spitzenpolitiker_innen steht.Der Band stellt diese Demokratietheorie vor und macht den Ansatz sowie die Diskussion um ihn erstmals für den deutschen Diskurskontext zugänglich. Die Beiträger_innen greifen dabei die Debatte um die Krise der repräsentativen Demokratie auf und untersuchen die Potenziale einer plebiszitären Zuschauerdemokratie. In The Eyes of the People the political scientist Jeffrey Edward Green develops a fundamentally new theory of democratic participation termed "ocular democracy«, emphasizing the citizens' view as an instrument of democratic control that does not focus on contents but rather on the public performance of leading politicians. Presenting that theory about democracy, this volume makes its approach as well as the debate about it accessible to the German context of discourse for the first time. The contributors take up the debate about the crisis of representative democracy and examine the potential a plebiscitary democracy of viewers may have.

Es ist unter Rekurs auf allgemeindidaktische »Multiliteracies«-Modelle aus dem angloamerikanischen Sprachraum ausgearbeitet und zielt darauf, Schüler_innen eine umfassende kulturelle Partizipation an Formen und Funktionen literarischer Sprache zu ermöglichen - was Kompetenzen im Sinne Franz Weinerts einschließt, zugleich aber hierüber hinausgeht. Eine solche Form literarischer Literalität bildet die Voraussetzung für genuin ästhetische Bildungsimpulse. Dem Modell kommt so eine Brücken- und Vermittlungsfunktion zwischen der Kompetenzorientierung und dem Bildungsanspruch der Schule zu.

Im Durchgang durch gegenwärtige Strömungen der künstlerischen Historiografien, der partizipatorischen und kollaborativen Kunstpraxis sowie Formen des künstlerischen Aktivismus zeigt Sebastian Mühl auf, dass die Auseinandersetzungen um das Erbe des utopischen Denkens maßgeblich für eine politische und ästhetische Neuorientierung der Kunst nach 1989 erscheinen und dass die Gegenwartskunst den emanzipatorischen Impulsen des modernen utopischen Denkens durch eine Kritik an dessen problematischen Aspekten die Treue hält.

    Das Konzept einer literarästhetischen Literalität kompensiert Defizite eines am Kompetenzparadigma ausgerichteten Literaturunterrichts. Es ist unter Rekurs auf allgemeindidaktische »Multiliteracies«-Modelle aus dem angloamerikanischen Sprachraum ausgearbeitet und zielt darauf, Schüler_innen eine umfassende kulturelle Partizipation an Formen und Funktionen literarischer Sprache zu ermöglichen - was Kompetenzen im Sinne Franz Weinerts einschließt, zugleich aber hierüber hinausgeht. Eine solche Form literarischer Literalität bildet zugleich die Voraussetzung für genuin ästhetische Bildungsimpulse.     Scholars often refer to the term "implied audience" to describe the ideal audience an author intends to fashion through a specific story or narrative. The author of the Fourth Gospel articulates the purpose and implied rhetorical effect of the Gospel on its audience in no uncertain terms near the end of the narrative (19:35; 20:30-31). While the Fourth Gospel explicitly paints the picture of the implied audience as those who will believe and have life in Jesus's name (19:25; 20:31), the Gospel's engagement with the audience exceeds these purpose statements. The picture of the ideal audience is on the table from the beginning of the Gospel and strengthened by the rhetorical 2 mastery of creating attractive identities who perform the purpose of the Gospel well and with whom the audience is implicitly exhorted to identify. These include the ideal group referred to as "we" (1:14; 21:24) and various characters, including the beloved disciple, who fulfil the aims of the Gospel by believing in Jesus. The audience, therefore, becomes more than spectators of the Fourth Gospel, but essentially participators, and finally performers as John opens up its performative axis to them.

    The Child and Dependent Care Credit (CDCC) allows households to receive tax credits for certain expenses associated with the care of a spouse or adult dependent who is incapable of self care, but very few childless households claim the credit. We examine the value of the CDCC for qualifying households caring for adults. We find that, as of 2016, more than 10 percent of individuals aged 50 to 65 had a coresident spouse or parent likely to be a qualifying individual for the CDCC. We document how state and federal CDCC benefits decrease post-tax costs of typical caregiving services, such as hiring a home health aide, across states. We find that a temporary expansion during 2021 led to substantial decreases in post-tax care costs but generated considerable differences in benefits across households with spouse and nonspouse qualifying individuals. We discuss expected effects on taxpayers' behavior of permanently expanding the CDCC and find that making the credit refundable would nearly double the number of eligible spousal caregivers aged 50 to 65, with eligibility rates increasing substantially among female, nonwhite, and lowincome caregivers.

    The paper was created in the context of the project Akzept and focuses on the description of the scenario process and its results in the form of three scenarios for a desirable energy transition. The project aimed at analysing the influence of participation, communication, and selected socioeconomic criteria on the acceptance of the energy transition. The impact of self-supply of electricity and membership in a citizen energy initiative on the acceptance of the energy transition by those who did not participate in this way was also studied. The team conducted two scenario workshops to describe future designs of the energy transition as well as the needs and preferences of society in the form of various future scenarios. One workshop included persons who participated in the form of self-supply or membership in energy initiatives, while the other workshop aimed at socalled non-participants with a general interest in the topic of energy. The workshops comprised a combination of different activities, brainstorming, and discussions in small groups, and contributed to ensure engagement of participants with very different backgrounds throughout the scenario development. The scope for the scenario process was formed by important topics related to the energy transition that can be divided into three groups: individual engagement and decisions, energy transition in the broader context, and involvement as well as decisions in general. The energy transition can be achieved along three different paths, so-called scenarios: bottom-up, acceleration, and passive. The bottom-up scenario emphasises decentralised energy production with transparency and fairness, allowing for genuine participation and co-determination of citizens. It involves many small plants for energy production and allows for self-consumption, with low barriers for citizens to participate. The acceleration scenario prioritises rapid implementation and focuses on becoming independent from energy imports. It places a strong emphasis on regulations, and companies that emit high levels of CO2 have to pay a high price for their emissions. The passive scenario is characterised by a low level of interest from citizens, who display weak acceptance towards the energy transition. Information and transparency are not important, and the government is responsible for deciding on how to achieve the energy transition. The transition occurs at low cost, and energy utilities provide renewable energy at low prices.

    While cities are important emitters of greenhouse gases (GHG), they are also vulnerable to the impacts of climate change; at the same time they constitute innovation hubs for climate action. For cities to fulfil their potential for global climate action, a thorough understanding of the governance of transformative change towards the decarbonisation of cities is necessary. This study asks: Which governance approaches facilitate successful transformative change towards zero carbon in cities? It specifically addresses the three key aspects stakeholder involvement, financing, and impact assessment, and looks at how they contribute to transformative change - particularly to the dimensions CO2 reduction, the dynamics of transformation, and acceptance by citizens. The empirical analysis is based on a mixed methods approach. An international survey involving city government officials of cities that are proactive in the fight against climate change was conducted in order to obtain an overview of socio-ecological transformation paths. In addition to this macro-level approach, in-depth case studies of three cities that are widely regarded as proactive on climate action in their respective world regions - Bonn, Quito and Cape Town - provide complementary insights. The survey data show a generally positive tendency in the way local governments approach GHG emission reduction activities. Most of the participating cities engage in the mainstreaming of policies to address climate change in local decision-making and have established climate action plans and emission reduction targets; however, on actual climate action and the reduction of emissions, the picture is more mixed. While stakeholder involvement is generally considered a key success factor in the survey responses and in the three case-study cities, stakeholders were seldom involved in a truly inclusive and cooperative way. While Bonn has gradually expanded citizen engagement, in Quito relations between the local government and stakeholder groups have often been short-term and project-bound, while a close connection between city government and academic institutions has been established in Cape Town. In terms of finance, cities mostly rely on traditional financing sources such as intergovernmental transfers, local taxes and fees, as well as international grants to cities of the Global South. Additional funding through the generation of local revenues or market-based finance mechanisms is less widespread. Both Quito and Cape Town depend heavily on external funding from international organisations and donors, along with central government transfers, which are less relevant in Bonn. While building the metro is absorbing finances for additional climate action in Quito, perverse incentives exist in South Africa where cities receive revenues from re-selling fossil fuel-based energy to consumers. Bonn has recently started to experiment with a sustainability budget to align budgeting with sustainability and climate goals. As far as impact assessment is concerned, most cities in the survey including the three case-study cities collect relevant data. However, systematic impact assessment or the incorporation of lessons learned from monitoring and evaluation into policy occur less frequently. Despite its limitations, this study contributes to the theoretical and empirical discussions in the field of transformative urban governance by suggesting a conceptual framework for dimensions of success for transformative change, by combining survey and case study-based data, and by looking at finances and impact assessment which are two important governance dimensions that are not frequently investigated.

    The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. This is a crucial guide to the ways in which new, interdisciplinary understandings of emotion and affect—in fields from neuroscience to social theory--are changing the study of literature and of the ways those new understandings are impacted by work on literature also
