This book presents a new history of German film from 1980-2010, a period that witnessed rapid transformations, including intensified globalization, a restructured world economy, geopolitical realignment, and technological change, all of which have affected cinema in fundamental ways. Rethinking the conventional periodization of German film history, Baer posits 1980-rather than 1989-as a crucial turning point for German cinema's embrace of a new market orientation and move away from the state-sponsored film culture that characterized both DEFA and the New German Cinema. Reading films from East, West, and post-unification Germany together, Baer argues that contemporary German cinema is characterized most strongly by its origins in and responses to advanced capitalism. Informed by a feminist approach and in dialogue with prominent theories of contemporary film, the book places a special focus on how German films make visible the neoliberal recasting of gender and national identities around the new millennium.

In this book Jo Littler argues that meritocracy is the key cultural means of legitimation for contemporary neoliberal culture – and that whilst it promises opportunity, it in fact creates new forms of social division. Against Meritocracy is split into two parts. Part I explores the genealogies of meritocracy within social theory, political discourse and working cultures. It traces the dramatic U-turn in meritocracy’s meaning, from socialist slur to a contemporary ideal of how a society should be organised. Part II uses a series of case studies to analyse the cultural pull of popular ‘parables of progress’, from reality TV to the super-rich and celebrity CEOs, from social media controversies to the rise of the ‘mumpreneur’. Paying special attention to the role of gender, ‘race’ and class, this book provides new conceptualisations of the meaning of meritocracy in contemporary culture and society.

In this volume, these notions and conditions are connected with the concept of borders, which seems to have disappeared as a function of the global neoliberal economy but is palpably reappearing again and again through deportations, segregations, and war. How can we think about these relations in an open way, beyond borders? Is it possible to develop border thinking for a radical transformation, as a means to revolutionize the state of things? To do this, we must reconsider what is possible for the social and the political as well as for art and culture.

Salvage Work examines contemporary literary responses to the law’s construction of personhood in the Americas. Tracking the extraordinary afterlives of the legal slave personality from the nineteenth century into the twenty-first, Angela Naimou shows the legal slave to be a fractured but generative figure for contemporary legal personhood across categories of race, citizenship, gender, and labor. What emerges is a compelling and original study of how law invents categories of identification and how literature contends with the person as a legal fiction. Through readings of Francisco Goldman’s The Ordinary Seaman, Edwidge Danticat’s Krik?Krak!, Rosario Ferre’s Sweet Diamond Dust (Maldito Amor), Gayl Jones’s Song for Anninho and Mosquito, and John Edgar Wideman’s Fanon, Naimou shows how literary engagements with legal personhood reconfigure formal narrative conventions in Black Atlantic historiography, the immigrant novel, the anticolonial romance, the trope of the talking book, and the bildungsroman.Revealing links between colonial, civic, slave, labor, immigration, and penal law, Salvage Work reframes debates over civil and human rights by revealing the shared hemispheric histories and effects of legal personhood across seemingly disparate identities—including the human and the corporate person, the political refugee and the economic migrant, and the stateless person and the citizen.In depicting the material remains of the legal slave personality in the de-industrialized neoliberal era, these literary texts develop a salvage aesthetic that invites us to rethink our political and aesthetic imagination of personhood. Questioning liberal frameworks for civil and human rights as well as what Naimou calls death-bound theories of personhood—in which forms of human life are primarily described as wasted, disposable, bare, or dead in law—Salvage Work thus responds to critical discussions of biopolitics and neoliberal globalization by exploring the potential for contemporary literature to reclaim the individual from the legal regimes that have marked her

In Xenocitizens, Jason Berger returns to the antebellum United States in order to challenge a scholarly tradition based on liberal–humanist perspectives. Through the concept of the xenocitizen, a synthesis of the terms "xeno," which connotes alien or stranger, and "citizen," which signals a naturalized subject of a state, Berger uncovers realities and possibilities that have been foreclosed by dominant paradigms. Innovatively re-orienting our thinking about traditional nineteenth-century figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau as well as formative writers such as William Wells Brown, Martin R. Delany, Margaret Fuller, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Xenocitizens glimpses how antebellum thinkers formulated, in response to varying forms of oppression and crisis, startlingly unique ontological and social models as well as unfamiliar ways to exist and to leverage change. In vielen Großerzählungen über die Veränderung moderner Arbeit spielt die Diagnose einer postfordistischen Transformation eine entscheidende Rolle. Konstatiert werden der Umbau der Arbeitswelt in Richtung flexibler, symbolischer und kreativer Arbeitsformen bei gleichzeitiger Erosion kollektiver Organisationsformen und des solidarischen Zusammenhalts unter Lohnarbeitenden. Dieses Buch nähert sich dem Diskurs postfordistischer Transformation anhand seiner Ausprägungen im deutschen Kino der Gegenwart. Es analysiert, wie die Filme mit der Herausforderung umgehen, für die prekären Sinnlichkeiten der ‚neuen‘ Arbeitswelten und die ontologische Flüchtigkeit des Sozialen eine spezifische Form zu finden. Dabei lassen sich zentrale filmische Motive identifizieren – von der Beratung über die Besprechung bis zur filmischen Kritik postfordistischer Sprechweisen –, denen das Buch in Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen wie DIE AUSBILDUNG, TONI ERDMANN oder WORK HARD PLAY HARD nachgeht. Die Analyse ihrer verschiedenen Verweisbeziehungen und diskursiven Funktionen schärft in theoretisch-methodischer Hinsicht die Aufmerksamkeit für die (sozialen) Signifikationspotenziale des Films.

On March 11, 2004, Islamist terrorists carried out a massive bombing on Madrid's largely working-class commuter trains, leaving 191 people dead and more than 1,500 others wounded. This event, known in Spain as 11-M, was the second of three highly visible jihadist attacks on the West between 2001 and 2005, and the first in Europe, occurring just days before the national elections in Spain. Arguing that 11-M marked a critical turning point in Spanish society, this book reveals how poetry played a unique role and reflected a new political and cultural sensibility defined by informal and non-hierarchical networks of communication and memorialization. After the attacks, poems circulated in public spaces in unexpected ways, creating links and relationships that were binding: they were inscribed on banners and monuments; musicalized in anthems, protest songs, and hip-hop music; reproduced on manifestos and blogs; sent by email and text; scribbled on scraps of paper and posted on walls; performed publicly; and painted as graffiti. These forms of expression also resonated strongly with Spanish poets who had already been exploring the possibilities of ethical engagement and aesthetic creation. Poetry and Crisis explores how this essentially poetic sensibility emerged from tragedy, laying the groundwork for similar kinds of affective and grassroots mobilization that continue to grow in Europe today

Abstract: Auslandsstudien wird im Allgemeinen und nicht zuletzt ein bedeutender ökonomischer Wert zugeschrieben. Studierende werden ermutigt, durch internationale Erfahrung wichtige berufliche Referenzen und Kompetenzen zu erwerben, ihre sozialen und interkulturellen Skills, ihre employability zu entwickeln. Doch welcher Wert wird in einem Auslandsstudium von den Beteiligten selbst gesehen? Die vorliegende Studie untersucht anhand von 50 Leitfadeninterviews mit Erasmus-Studierenden, welche Wertzuschreibungen vorgenommen und wie diese diskursiv arrangiert werden. Vor dem Hintergrund theoretischer Überlegungen zum Wert von Auslandsstudien (Michael Byram) und zu Tendenzen des Fremdverstehens (Mario Erdheim und Jürgen Kramer) werden hierbei lediglich geringe Spuren neoliberaler Subjektivität im Sprechen über die Auslandserfahrung nachgewiesen, die deutlich von persönlichkeitsbildenden, interkulturellen und sozialen Aspekten überlagert werden
