    The Bruges-born poet-priest Guido Gezelle (1830–1899) is generally considered one of the masters of nineteenth-century European lyric poetry. At the end of his life and in the first two decades of the twentieth century, Gezelle was hailed by the avant-garde as the founder of modernFlemish poetry. His unique voice was belatedly recognised in the Netherlandsand often compared with his English contemporary Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–1889).In this bilingual anthology, award-winning translator Paul Vincent selects a representative picture of Gezelle’s output, from devotional through narrative, to celebratory and expressionistic. Gezelle’s favourite themes are childhood, the Flemish landscape, friendship, nature, religion and the Flemish vernacular, and his apparently simple poems conceal a sophisticated prosody and a dialogue with spiritual and literary tradition.

    "Lucinda Cole’s Imperfect Creatures offers the first full-length study of the shifting, unstable, but foundational status of “vermin” as creatures and category in the early modern literary, scientific, and political imagination. In the space between theology and an emergent empiricism, Cole’s argument engages a wide historical swath of canonical early modern literary texts—William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, Abraham Cowley’s The Plagues of Egypt, Thomas Shadwell’s The Virtuoso, the Earl of Rochester’s “A Ramble in St. James’s Park,” and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Journal of the Plague Year—alongside other nonliterary primary sources and under-examined archival materials from the period, including treatises on animal trials, grain shortages, rabies, and comparative neuroanatomy.

     

    As Cole illustrates, human health and demographic problems—notably those of feeding populations periodically stricken by hunger, disease, and famine—were tied to larger questions about food supplies, property laws, national identity, and the theological imperatives that underwrote humankind’s claim to dominion over the animal kingdom. In this context, Cole’s study indicates, so-called “vermin” occupied liminal spaces between subject and object, nature and animal, animal and the devil, the devil and disease—even reason and madness. This verminous discourse formed a foundational category used to carve out humankind’s relationship to an unpredictable, irrational natural world, but it evolved into a form for thinking about not merely animals but anything that threatened the health of the body politic—humans, animals, and even thoughts."

Comment les voyageurs ont-ils perçu, d’un siècle à l’autre, l’étroite connivence qui se manifeste à Venise entre la nature sauvage et le bâti harmonieux ? Tout en se démarquant de la domination qu’exercent les études littéraires dans le domaine du voyage à Venise, cette étude reconstitue donc les transformations du regard sur l’architecture et analyse le processus de « réévaluation » progressive de l’eau lagunaire, du voyage naturaliste de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, à l’apparition d’un tourisme balnéaire dans la Venise des Habsbourg.

    »Umwelt« ist zu einem inflationär gebrauchten Schlagwort geworden, das auch die wissenschaftliche Debatte anführt, da es Aufklärung und Lösung verspricht. Eine wissenschaftstheoretische Auseinandersetzung mit der Umweltsoziologie, die hierbei wesentlich präsent ist, scheint also geboten. Katharina Block rückt dabei die Frage nach anthropologischen Verkürzungen, die mit dem Umweltbegriff systematisch einhergehen, in den Fokus und schafft im Gegenzug mit dem Weltbegriff der Philosophischen Anthropologie Helmuth Plessners die Möglichkeit, die aufgedeckten Anthropologismen zurückzulassen und neue sozialtheoretische Anschlüsse zu suchen. Die Studie ist damit für alle Disziplinen interessant, die sich mit der hoch aktuellen Thematik menschlicher Umweltverhältnisse beschäftigen. »Environment« has become an overused buzzword that also is at the forefront of the academic debate, since it promises enlightenment and resolution. An interrogation of environmental sociology informed by the theory of science, which is fundamentally present here, seems to be offered. Katharina Block places the focus on the question of anthropological abbreviations which are systematically associated with the concept of the environment, and in a countermotion, employs the concept of the world to create the possibility of casting off these anthropologisms which have been exposed, and of seeking out new socio-theoretical connections. As such, this study is of interest for all disciplines that deal with the highly contemporary topic of human-environmental relations.

    Grünes Wachstum, Nullemission, Energiewende, ökologische Modernisierung. Die Klimadebatte hat ihr eigenes Vokabular hervorgebracht, dessen Begriffe eine strukturkonservative Agenda transportieren: Mit marktbasierten Klimaschutzinstrumenten, grüner Technologie und globalem Management sollen die lebenswichtigen Funktionen der Atmosphäre bewahrt und gleichzeitig ungebremstes Wachstum ermöglicht werden. Dieses Ideal der Industriegesellschaften hat jedoch den Klimawandel verursacht und wird nun zu dessen Lösung umgedeutet. Im »Wörterbuch Klimadebatte« analysieren Expert_innen aus Sozial-, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaften über 40 Schlüsselbegriffe des Klimadiskurses, die diese Utopie plausibel und alternativlos erscheinen lassen, und zeigen notwendige Perspektiven jenseits einer neoliberalen Klimapolitik Green growth, zero emissions, sustainability - the climate change debate has created its own vocabulary, the concepts of which can sometimes be strategically coupled to one another in order to increase their plausibility. »Climate neutrality« and »climate compatible development« appear to be admirable goals, but can they also be realized in a socially neutral way? Why are there »climate refugees« only in developing countries, when climate change is actually a global problem?In the »Climate Debate Dictionary«, experts in the discourse on climate change from the social and political sciences and cultural studies put over 40 key concepts up for discussion, thereby providing an introduction to the critical reflection of the objectives and the problems of contemporary climate policy
