    Si le récit reste aujourd’hui fragile dans son retour en grâce, si le réel reste difficile à appréhender par la narration, la fiction peut-elle se glisser dans cet entre-deux ? La fiction peut-elle offrir des formes narratives et discursives inédites ? Peut-elle trouver dans la narration, dont l’attirance cependant doublée de dérision distanciée chez les écrivains d’aujourd’hui se fait nettement sentir, un support générique acceptable ou bien se cherche-t-elle, par l’entremise, et la mise en œuvre d’autres sémiotiques, une échappée belle à la croisée d’autres genres, d’autres supports ? Quelles sont les conditions de possibilité́, en somme, de son renouveau ou de sa survie ? Le présent recueil, issu d’une réflexion collective sur les grandes déterminations linguistiques et formelles des fictions narratives française du xxie siècle, tente donc de dégager les spécificités des écritures contemporaines de fiction par rapport aux écritures narratives du xxe siècle.

    Aucun doute : la catégorie du « genre/Gender » a bien fait son entrée dans l'institution universitaire française. Mieux encore, cette catégorie d'analyse « voyageuse » se reconfigure sans cesse au gré des transferts transatlantiques et des appropriations disciplinaires qu'elle connaît. Le présent volume aborde différentes formes de narration contemporaine, de la fiction ou au film à l'entretien clinique ou au récit de vie. Il est né de la volonté de croiser, autour du problème de la narration genrée, cette réalité française « décalée » avec des perspectives développées plus tôt dans la recherche germanophone sur le genre. Les études sur la narration ouvrent un large champ d'exploration et d'expérimentation des identités. Dans le sillage du Performative Turn, il devient possible de penser le genre comme l'un des éléments constitutifs de l'acte narratif. Le genre est le résultat d'un dire qui est, dans le même temps, un faire. Dire « je suis femme/homme », c'est en partie se constituer en tant que tel-le. La narration de l'identité de genre apparaît alors comme une éternelle refiguration, c'est-à-dire une manière signifiante pour soi d'arranger et d'agencer son récit de soi pour les autres. Dès lors, la narration de soi fonctionne comme un espace performatif de représentation construit par le sujet et au sein duquel il se définit in medias res, dans une constante évolution.

    Erzählungen wie auch Dramen besitzen mehrheitlich einen strukturellen Unterbau, den man in einem weit gefassten Sinne als moralisch beschreiben kann - er vermittelt also Regeln und Sätze des „Sollens“. Dieser Unterbau wie auch die Beziehung zwischen Erzähler und Leser werden in der Metapher des „Moralischen Paktes“ abgebildet, eines Paktes mit drei Elementen: Konkurrenz, Austausch und Vertrag. In einem solchen Rahmen bewegt sich in der Regel das literarische Figurenpersonal. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der moralischen Struktur literarischer Werke, ein weiterer Band, der dem Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Erzähler bzw. zwischen Erzähler und Leser gewidmet sein wird, ist in Vorbereitung. Narratives and dramatic plays are usually based on a non manifest structure that can be conceived as a moral one, where you can find rules and sentences of having-to-do. The Moral Contract as a metaphor describes this fundamental basis, composed of three components: competition, exchange and contract. In this framework the narrative figures are bound to their acting. This volume 1 deals with such a structure, volume 2 will focus on the relation of the writer and his narrator just as on the relation of the narrator and the reader.

    Der Sammelband bündelt Aufsätze zur literarischen Darstellung von Krankheiten und Mengen. Die einzelnen Beiträge zielen auf das ästhetische (Erzähl-)Potenzial im Verhältnis dieser beiden Sujets zueinander. Sie nehmen dabei Fragen nach Phänomenen der Ansteckung, der Darstellung von Krankheiten, Versuchen der Ordnung von Menge zur Vermeidung von Krankheitsausbreitung oder dem Verhältnis zwischen Individuum und Menge im Zustand der Krankheit in den Blick. In komparatistischer Anlage durchläuft der Sammelband Stationen der Reflexion über Menge und Krankheit vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart.

    Parce que les hommes racontent pour laisser des traces et ne pas mourir, ils tentent sans cesse d'abolir le temps. Tentative magnifique qui, même si elle est vouée à l'échec, donne à la littérature occidentale ses plus grands récits. Des aventures de Don Juan aux voyages de Gulliver en passant par la quête abyssale de Melville, le drame faustien, l'épopée moderne de Joyce et la Recherche de Proust - pour ne citer que quelques-uns des trésors présentés dans cet ouvrage -, ce qui traverse toute notre littérature, c'est ce désir sans cesse renouvelé des hommes d'aller sans trêve d'un objet à l'autre, dans l'oubli d'eux-mêmes. Chaque œuvre qui traverse les siècles échappe à l'époque qui l'a vue naître. Tous les grands récits du Temps aboli sont donc contemporains les uns des autres et ils appartiennent à tous les temps.     L'acte de raconter a cessé d'être un acte culturel évident. De nombreux romanciers contemporains ont tenté de s'affranchir des formes narratives traditionnelles et ont brouillé, dans certains cas les critères distinctifs qui permettent de séparer les genres littéraires. Quant à l'histoire, éprise de scientificité et de positivité technique, il n'est plus assuré qu'elle appartienne encore, dans la pensée de ceux qui la pratiquent, au monde des « lettres ». À l'inverse, la philosophie, la linguistique et d'autres sciences de l'homme ont manifesté un intérêt grandissant pour l'acte narratif, lequel semble d'ailleurs répondre à une exigence spirituelle indéracinable. Des attentes et des interrogations diverses lui sont dès lors explicitement adressées. Ce livre s'en fait l'écho. Il est le résultat d'un colloque organisé aux Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis en avril 1984 en collaboration avec les principales universités francophones de Belgique et dont les contributions contiennent à la fois un « état de la question » et le noyau de nouvelles hypothèses et de nouveaux approfondissements.

    L'histoire littéraire est jalonnée d'affirmations si convaincantes qu'elles se répètent à l'envi. Maupassant en a souvent été victime. On a pu dire que ses volumes de récits courts étaient la simple réunion - hasardeuse et opportuniste - des derniers textes parus dans la presse. Un certain nombre d'éditeurs ont alors redistribué les contes et nouvelles sur le lit de Procuste, regroupant de façon parfois arbitraire les récits courts autour de parcours thématiques et génériques. Pour une poétique du recueil se propose de montrer que, loin d'être la rencontre fortuite de textes, les volumes de contes conçus par Maupassant jouent avec les possibilités du livre et avec les voisinages de textes qu'il permet. Comment ignorer que, sur les quelque trois cents contes parus dans les journaux, Maupassant a laissé dans ses cartons un tiers de sa production et a ventilé les deux tiers restants dans quinze recueils qu'il a composés lui-même ? Pourquoi l'édition posthume ne les a-t-elle pas plus souvent pris en compte ? Selon quels critères les textes ont-ils été répartis par l'écrivain dans ses quinze ouvrages ? Que peut nous apprendre l'archéologie des recueils ? Dans quel sens les récits ont-il été réécrits pour prendre place dans le volume ? Quel est le rôle des nouvelles d'ouverture et de clôture ? Les combinaisons nées de la discontinuité soufflent le chaud et le froid sur le recueil de récits courts et en font une forme idéale pour susciter maints effets de sens et donner la vision d'un monde qui va cahin-caha : le jour et la nuit, contrairement au titre ironique d'un des volumes, ne s'équilibrent pas, et le rire exacerbe - presque - toujours la dissonance. Le recueil, tel que l'a voulu l'écrivain, apporte au « maupassantophile » un supplément d'âme et de sens à la lecture des contes. Pour une poétique explore chacun des quinze ouvrages comme une aventure singulière.

    The article focuses on border crossings in travel stories, which were published in hand-written newspapers in 19th- and early 20th-century Finland. These papers were a popular tradition in student organizations and popular movements. Border crossings appear in travel stories in three different representations. Firstly, border crossings are repeated motifs in travel stories, both as challenging events and as small gestures and encounters. Travel stories demarcate boundaries, but they also provide a means for transgressing them. Secondly, hand-written newspapers as a literary practice highlight borders between oral and written communication. They were produced as one single manuscript copy, and published by being read out aloud in social events. Thirdly, the authors of hand-written newspapers were placed on the border of different positions in society such as class, gender and age. My analysis is based on the methodological discussion of small stories and personal experience narratives; travel stories can be defined as “local event narratives”. I have outlined four basic models for travel stories which emerge from hand-written newspapers: the great mission story, the grand tour story, the flâneur story and the retreat story. The analysis of travel stories is presented through four different case studies with a time range from the 1850s to the 1920s: these materials have been produced in two provincial student fraternities (osakunta), in the temperance society “Star” in Helsinki in the 1890s, and in the Social Democratic Youth Club in the small industrial town of Karkkila in the 1910s and the 1920s. Many parallel features can be observed in travel stories, even though the social background and ideology of the authors are quite different. Time and space are important aspects in travel stories, and they often demarcate boundaries of class and gender.

    Interested in the ideological workings of fiction, I study how major avant-garde tropes promote the potential of permanent renewal as white America’s property. Renewal ties to the capacities to create, progress, transcend, and simply be. From Black critique we know that, within dominant discourse, all these capacities have been denied to Black bodies ever since colonization. Black work has been fetishized, appropriated, stolen, and dismissed in and by dominant culture, while Black being is construed as negativity and barred on the level of ontology. It follows then that racialization operates on multiple levels in the conceptual frame of renewal. I study this conceptualization by re-reading the works of and criticism on progressive white authors. I examine how images of renewal enable the claim on futurity, transformative potential, and movement forward as exclusively white properties. Premised on oppositions between positive capacities and a state of complete incapacitation, these images are often viewed as separate constructions. This project shows that, deriving from white ideology, such representations are symbiotic and simultaneous - the "good" story of white renewal rests on the continual transgression towards Black being

    In recent years, scholars of the Hebrew Bible have increasingly challenged entrenched dichotomies between historical criticism and literary theory. This integrative approach draws on contemporary literary studies to achieve a fuller understanding of biblical texts as fictive works in their ancient historical contexts. Theophany narratives invite especially fruitful application of this approach because they are both culturally specific and literarily complex. In this article, I contribute to this conversation by analyzing the fictive role of narrational voicing in Deut 4:1-40, the opening section of Moses's first-person account of the Horeb theophany in the pentateuchal Deuteronomic source. This passage famously underscores the auditory (as opposed to visual) character of the Horeb theophany in order to provide phenomenological ground for aniconism. While scholars usually treat this as a tenet of Deuteronomic theology, I argue that it is also part of the Deuteronomic poetics of first-person narration: Moses is framing the theophany in terms of his experience of the molten calf, which has already happened within the story world of D. This literary effect emerged both through Deuteronomic engagement with the earlier, Elohistic version of the story and through retrospective sapientialization of earlier material within D itself. Integrating historical-critical and literary-theoretical approaches shows how Deut 4:1-40 uses first-person narration to construct the theophany through the character development of the narrator.
