    Erzählungen wie auch Dramen besitzen mehrheitlich einen strukturellen Unterbau, den man in einem weit gefassten Sinne als moralisch beschreiben kann - er vermittelt also Regeln und Sätze des „Sollens“. Dieser Unterbau wie auch die Beziehung zwischen Erzähler und Leser werden in der Metapher des „Moralischen Paktes“ abgebildet, eines Paktes mit drei Elementen: Konkurrenz, Austausch und Vertrag. In einem solchen Rahmen bewegt sich in der Regel das literarische Figurenpersonal. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der moralischen Struktur literarischer Werke, ein weiterer Band, der dem Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Erzähler bzw. zwischen Erzähler und Leser gewidmet sein wird, ist in Vorbereitung. Narratives and dramatic plays are usually based on a non manifest structure that can be conceived as a moral one, where you can find rules and sentences of having-to-do. The Moral Contract as a metaphor describes this fundamental basis, composed of three components: competition, exchange and contract. In this framework the narrative figures are bound to their acting. This volume 1 deals with such a structure, volume 2 will focus on the relation of the writer and his narrator just as on the relation of the narrator and the reader.

    Interested in the ideological workings of fiction, I study how major avant-garde tropes promote the potential of permanent renewal as white America’s property. Renewal ties to the capacities to create, progress, transcend, and simply be. From Black critique we know that, within dominant discourse, all these capacities have been denied to Black bodies ever since colonization. Black work has been fetishized, appropriated, stolen, and dismissed in and by dominant culture, while Black being is construed as negativity and barred on the level of ontology. It follows then that racialization operates on multiple levels in the conceptual frame of renewal. I study this conceptualization by re-reading the works of and criticism on progressive white authors. I examine how images of renewal enable the claim on futurity, transformative potential, and movement forward as exclusively white properties. Premised on oppositions between positive capacities and a state of complete incapacitation, these images are often viewed as separate constructions. This project shows that, deriving from white ideology, such representations are symbiotic and simultaneous - the "good" story of white renewal rests on the continual transgression towards Black being

    Since its publication, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights has given rise to an unusual plurality of interpretations, leading to the impression that the novel somehow resists interpretation. The author offers a new reading of the novel that takes this effect into account by investigating its reason: ambiguity is a thematic focal point and structural key element of the novel. This study is concerned with the ambiguity of Wuthering Heights which arises through a complex interplay of distinct but interdependent ambiguities of perception, narration, and the narrated world. In particular, it shows how specific ambiguous utterances (e.g. a clash of implicatures and presuppositions) are linked with each other and contribute to the global ambiguity of the text. In this way, not only the function of ambiguity for understanding Wuthering Heights is explored but also the function of Wuthering Heights for understanding ambiguity. The book should thus be of interest not only to Brontë scholars and Victorianists but also to literary scholars and linguists in general.

    There are ghosts. At least, in "Hamlet" there are. This is an example of a fictional truth, of something true in a fiction. Or so it seems. For, once we broaden our view to all kinds and realms of fiction our ordinary notions are challenged, and intriguing philosophical questions arise. Are there really any fictional truths? How can they be determined? Is everything just interpretation? Can anything be fictional? Could you be part of a fiction? Et cetera. The philosophical literature on fiction typically focusses on the semantics of fictional discourse and the ontology of fictional objects. In contrast, this study explores the nature of fictional truth by analyzing its conceptual structure and by unfolding some of its most important conceptual connections. After reviewing the field and identifying core elements that any theory of fictional truth must accommodate Christian Folde investigates several interrelated issues central to the on-going debates. Building on a clear account of fictional content and a wealth of examples the author offers novel solutions to various problems at the intersection of fictional truth, interpretation, and narration. The book thereby makes contributions to aesthetics, metaphysics and literary theory, among other things, and is thus both of philosophical and interdisciplinary value.

    Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Auch Thomas Mann war vom Nervendiskurs seiner Zeit wie auch vom Wissen um die Neurasthenie beeinflusst. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen. By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

Dieser Unterbau wie auch die Beziehung zwischen Erzähler und Leser werden in der Metapher des „Moralischen Paktes“ abgebildet, eines Paktes mit drei Elementen: Konkurrenz, Austausch und Vertrag. In einem solchen Rahmen bewegt sich in der Regel das literarische Figurenpersonal. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit der moralischen Struktur literarischer Werke, ein weiterer Band, der dem Verhältnis zwischen Autor und Erzähler bzw. zwischen Erzähler und Leser gewidmet sein wird, ist in Vorbereitung. Narratives and dramatic plays are usually based on a non manifest structure that can be conceived as a moral one, where you can find rules and sentences of having-to-do. The Moral Contract as a metaphor describes this fundamental basis, composed of three components: competition, exchange and contract. In this framework the narrative figures are bound to their acting. This volume 1 deals with such a structure, volume 2 will focus on the relation of the writer and his narrator just as on the relation of the narrator and the reader.
