    Die vorliegende Arbeit erschließt Gérard de Nerval als wegweisenden Dichtungstheoretiker für eine Narrativik der Moderne.Gérard de Nervals „Voyage en Orient“ verhandelt eine Reise in den Orient. Ihr vorgeschaltet ist allerdings ein umfassender Reiseteil durch Europa. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass dieser europäische Reiseteil die Funktion eines theoretischen Vorworts einnimmt: Darin wird das Dichtungsverständnis erläutert, nach dessen Maßgabe der Orientroman gestaltet ist. Leitend ist dabei die Frage, welche Form wahre Kunst und Dichtung hat. Zu deren Beantwortung greift der Erzähler höchst subtil und kunstvoll ein überbordendes Spektrum an Texten europäischer Dichtungs- und Kunsttheorie auf. Die Reise führt somit durch ein „Text-Reich über die wahre Form von Kunst“, welche für Nerval im Roman gründet.

    Walter Benjamin hat sein Denken und Schreiben verschiedentlich als Ausdruck von extremen Konstellationen gedeutet. Doch welche konkreten Schreibverfahren resultieren daraus? Die Studie untersucht diese Frage anhand einer einflussreichen intellektuellen Begegnung, die in der Benjamin-Forschung bisher kaum berücksichtigt wurde: Benjamins Rezeption von Salomo Friedlaenders ‚Schöpferische Indifferenz‘. Entlang einer vergleichenden Untersuchung wird gezeigt, wie beide Autoren die Denkfigur der ‚Polarität‘ als zeitdiagnostisches Erkenntnismedium nutzen, um die Krisen, Spannungen und Extreme der Zeit auf ihren Begriff zu bringen. Mit den Untersuchungen von konkreten Einflüssen und intertextuellen Verweisen erschließt die Arbeit einen Knotenpunkt der kleinteiligen intellektuellen Debatten, in denen Benjamins Schriften verortet sind und leistet zugleich einen Beitrag zur Wiederentdeckung des Philosophen und Schriftstellers Salomo Friedlaender.

The study of intertextuality and allusion provides a philological entry point into looking at the ways in which Jewish-Greek authors expressed their position in the cultural matrix of the ancient Mediterranean.

    This paper begins with a brief definition of allusion. The majority of the paper investigates the ways that memory language was used by ancient authors (Jewish, Greek, and Latin) as a literary technique to signal overt intertextual and intratextual allusions. I argue that this is a recognized, intentional, and cross-cultural phenomenon with varied practices and that scholars need to consider this in future studies of intertextuality.

    The hybrid cultural weave of the Sibylline Oracles is one of the most arresting aspects of a collection which preserves Judaeo-Christian compositions in Greek ranging from c. second century BCE to the seventh century CE. Reviewing world history in the form of prophecy, sketching rewards and punishments due at the end of days, and urging ethical behavior, these oracles in Homerizing hexameters combine Classical and Biblical traditions and are attributed to an ancient Sibyl. This article focuses on a distinctive case of repetition within the Sibylline corpus to highlight how the sense of a Classical canon is updated in the Jewish development of this prophetic genre. The passages triggering both intertextual and intratextual investigation ar Sibylline Oracles 3.419–25, which “predicts” that the blind Homer will be the first to open the Sibylline books and copy her tale of Troy, and the far less studied Sibylline Oracles 11.163–71, where phrases about Homer are revised to produce an emphasis on Vergil’s skill as a poet and discretion in concealing the Sibylline writings until his death. Study of these lines in their immediate and wider narrative contexts reveals the Jewish sibyllists exploiting the literary knowledge of Classically-educated readers, first and foremost in order to build up the Sibylline authority, a priority which is developed through both “combative” and “parasitic” stances in relation to canonical authors. Overall, this study offers new information about modes of allusion in Jewish Greek literature and the relationship between the tracks of Homeric and Vergilian reception in cross-cultural contexts.

    The field of intertextuality in biblical and theological scholarship is theoretically complex and diverse. The prevailing differences among intertextual interpreters produce this question: is there a hermeneutical theory that can clarify the diverse field of intertextuality? In order to answer this question, this essay interacts with hermeneutic phenomenology to demonstrate a common hermeneutical thread that clarifies the diversity of intertextual analysis. First, I delineate the foundations of intertextual theory in order to demonstrate how those foundations lead interpreters in a specific hermeneutical direction. Second, I explain how an intertextual analysis is complemented by Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur’s contributions to hermeneutics. Third, I demonstrate that Ricoeur’s comments on intertextuality challenge intertextual interpreters to move from intertextual theory into hermeneutical practice. Fourth, I propose that Ricoeur’s three-layered mimesis clarifies the diversity of intertextual analysis. Finally, I conclude by suggesting hermeneutical guidelines for intertextual interpreters in biblical and theological studies.

    Intertextuality is a hermeneutical strand of poststructuralism. In biblical scholarship, since Hays’s influential work Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (1989), the term has also been employed to refer to a later text’s interpretation of an earlier text. Regrettably, however, for the past three decades, scholars have failed to come to a consensus on how to understand and apply intertextuality in New Testament studies. Though both literary and biblical studies employ the same term intertextuality, their conception and application of intertextuality differs substantially. Accordingly, this essay will sketch how literary and biblical studies have perceived and utilized the concept of intertextuality. Following this, the study will evaluate these approaches. Finally, the present essay will conclude with a proposal for how to relate intertextuality and New Testament studies that is a cogent middle ground between poststructuralism and biblical studies, thereby compensating for both sides’ deficiencies.

    This article briefly surveys major commentaries and monographs, as well as significant articles, on the book of Proverbs. The broader genre of wisdom literature, of which Proverbs is a key component, has been undergoing intense scrutiny. The question was whether there is a wisdom genre at all and if so how should it be defined. 2011–2020 was a period of intense research during which a paradigm shift was in progress. Other issues include structure and rhetorical features, divine retribution, and theology more broadly, moral self-development, pedagogy, corporal punishment, and economic and social justice. Non-western and indigenous readings and research from a gender-sensitive perspective have continued to be significant.

    Die vorliegende Arbeit erschließt Gérard de Nerval als wegweisenden Dichtungstheoretiker für eine Narrativik der Moderne. Gérard de Nervals „Voyage en Orient“ verhandelt eine Reise in den Orient. Ihr vorgeschaltet ist allerdings ein umfassender Reiseteil durch Europa. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass dieser europäische Reiseteil die Funktion eines theoretischen Vorworts einnimmt: Darin wird das Dichtungsverständnis erläutert, nach dessen Maßgabe der Orientroman gestaltet ist. Leitend ist dabei die Frage, welche Form wahre Kunst und Dichtung hat. Zu deren Beantwortung greift der Erzähler höchst subtil und kunstvoll ein überbordendes Spektrum an Texten europäischer Dichtungs- und Kunsttheorie auf. Die Reise führt somit durch ein „Text-Reich über die wahre Form von Kunst“, welche für Nerval im Roman gründet.
